I know that it is expected that he'll be cut, but from a cap point of view when is the best time this off season to cut Tannehill? After the comments today, I got to wondering of a possibility whether they wait until after the draft to see how it shakes out in terms of which QBs are available.

    Unlikely I admit.

Start of FA cut CAP number 13 million
June 1st cut CAP is 7 million.
Trade is same as cutting him at the start of FA but you might get a pick. Not sure that pick will be worth that 6 million but who knows.

Current CAP info above - from Over The Cap website.

The Dolphins can go from 9 Million cap room to 78+ million cutting or trading these players.
    Ryan Tannehill June 1st cut
    Robert Quinn Cut
    Kenny Stills Trade
    Devante Parker Cut or Trade
    Andre Branch Cut
Josh Sitton Cut - Could save 2 million more by trading but doubt Fins could get a trade partner.
    Danny Amendola - Cut
    Ted Larsen - Cut
    Daniel Kilgore - Cut

Cutting Kiko Alonso June 1st will get cap room up to 84+ million.

    Would you miss anyone?

I don't expect any of those names to be on the Miami roster next season, save for potentially DeVante Parker. His only saving graces are the new coaching staff (which may evaluate him differently than Gase's) and his decent performance last season (graded at 69.2 per PFF, good for 5th best in the AFC East). Still, cutting him would save us almost 10m--hard to pass that up.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised to see T.J. McDonald, Reshad Jones, and Akeem Spence sent packing. McDonald, to me, is an overpaid player, Jones is inching beyond his prime (ideal candidate to trade to a contender), and I don't see Spence fitting into the new defense.

If Jones and McDonald are traded post-June 1st, that's +18m, and cutting Spence at anytime nets us another 3m. Flores and Grier won't have to worry about money during this rebuild, that's for sure.

Edit: Don't know if you edited Kenny Stills into your original post or if I missed his name, but I do expect him to be on the roster in '19.

Yeah, I didn't add Spence because he was only 3m and I do not see us spending on a whole lot in FA this year. I don't think it would make much difference either way.

Jones and TJ I did not know a post June 1st trade saved that much. I knew next year post June 1st cuts saved 18m but had not idea about the trade post June 1st this year. Will be interesting to see what they do.

Just ran the numbers back myself; for the most part, same results as Zigs. Added a few more players that I think are likely to be cut/traded (Aikens, Butler, Spence, McDonald). I think the team would love to cut Tannehill after June 1st for the extra 5m, and it certainly could happen, but I have feeling they're going to want that space for free agency.
    • Tannehill: 13.1 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Jones: 13.1 (trade post-June 1st)
    • Quinn: 12.9 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Parker: 9.3 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Branch: 7 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Alonso: 6.5 (trade post-June 1st)
    • Amendola: 6 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Sitton: 5 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • McDonald: 5 (trade post-June 1st)
    • Spence: 3.2 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Kilgore: 2.4 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Larsen: 2.1 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Aikens: 1.4 (cut pre-June 1st)
    • Butler: 1 (cut pre-June 1st)

According to overthecap, Miami has 11.4m in cap currently available. The aforementioned cuts would generate 88m by itself, totaling 99.4m.

    Pre-June 1st: ~74.8m
    Post-June 1st: ~24.6m

    Lots to work with!

Why do people always want to get rid of Stills?

He's an excellent receiver and a great person in the community.

I would say he is an excellent person and a good WR. His production does not warrant 9.75m a year IMO. But he may be kept anyway, trade saves 6.25m, June 1st cut will save only 6m.

Miami has met with the following prospects in the recent weeks:
    • Daniel Jones, QB, Duke (Senior Bowl) 1st
    • Brett Rypien, QB, Boise State (East-West) 4th
    • Riley Ridley, WRF, Georgia (Combine) 3rd
    • Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida (Combine) 1st
    • Andre Dillard, OT, Washington State (Senior Bowl) 2nd
    • Jordan Brailford, EDGE, Oklahoma State (East-West) 4th
    • Jalen Jelks, EDGE, Oregon (Senior Bowl) 4th
    • Armon Watts, DL5T, Arkansas (East-West) 5th
    • Sione Takitaki, OLB, Brigham Young (East-West) 6th
    • Blace Brown, CB, Troy (East-West) 3rd
    • Tyree Kinnel, S, Michigan (East-West) 7th
In bold, the round that I expect the prospect to be graded out and/or drafted at. Doesn't bode well for Ja'Wuan James that we're meeting with two highly regarded OT's.

Will update as needed. Information per Walter Cherepinsky @walterfootball.com

That's not the Patriots' defensive philosophy by any means.

In fact, many times, you'll find that the pat's D will double the biggest receiving threat with CB#2 & a safety, and utilize their best cover corner to completely eliminate an opponents 2nd favorite target.

There's no one true scheme or tactic of Belichick's defenses other than that; forcing an offense to operate out of their comfort zone.
