You know what after doing some initial video breakdowns from the internet today and seeing that nfl mock draft having us selecting Daniel Jones QB Duke University Injave to say I’m intrigued.

6.5 220-230 LBS. BIG ARM with touch!! Pretty good runner as well. Stands firm in the pocket when rushed. Now I’m going to say something stupid here but after watching the videos and yes they are highlights but I get the love child of Marino and Manning feel. He has good moble feet in the pocket and a deep arm with touch. I wonder if he might be a sleeper QB with Murray being the distraction??

He’s not as sexy as Murray but I see a prototypical pocket system QB when watching those videos. Ala Brady given the right coaching and John Gruden seemed to really like him in senior bowl calling him tough, smart, and professional all quailities we’re looking for.

What I find interesting is it seems the definition of leadership is subjective. There are some that would define Tannehill as a leader by example. However, another type of leader is someone like Russell Wilson or Drew Brees. Not only do they lead by example, but they also seem to connect with their teammates on a higher level. IMO, Tannehill isn't a true leader. He's just a hard worker. That's a great attribute, and certainly ok, but when it comes to QB's I prefer someone with a leadership style like Wilson or Brees. There are some guys on the team who don't need a guy like Wilson because they are self motivated and inspired by different reasons. However, there are guys on the team that do cherish and are inspired by those working relationships so it's important to have a guy who can relate to everyone.

The several times I watched Jones play, he seemed pretty raw, despite being a three year starter and playing for QB guru Cutcliff. On the surface, he has all of the size and physical characteristics that I would look for in a QB, but I really think that he's a guy who will need to develop for a while before he's any good. Right now, for the Dolphins, that's probably not the way that the franchise needs to go. The fan base would tear him apart. Given that there are others next year who are likely better, and will play well faster, I'd not even go for Jones in the second round.

I dunno I think if he played in a system and was just asked to play his part he could develop into a good qb. He has all the traits you want in a QB, however One negative for me is he’s not an alpha male. I don’t mean that negatively but look at Brady, Big Ben, Drew Brees these guys all want to win badly and are not afteaid to take command. Jones does seem a bit “passive” which would lead me to believe he can’t inspire or raise the talent around him but instead would need them to improve his ability.

Tannehill was a wide receiver trying to be a pro qb. That why he couldn’t get the decision process figured out. It takes years. They won’t be like tannehill. I keep hearing it about lock and jones. They will both be better than tannehill. They are actually qbs. Of course I don’t know who will be good. I sure hope whoever we get. That they turn out great. We sure could use a good Qb. Jones reminds me of big ben. And lock a little bit like elway. Neither remind me of tannehill.

Yes, absolutely. In both football and real life its a real pet peeve of mine. I think that people can be successful regardless of what type of personality that they have. And with QBs, I often tend to like the ones who aren't the loud, firey leaders.

I agree with you when it comes to real life. However, I don't think people who are passive make good NFL QBs. I prefer someone who is more assertive in that situation.

While I agree for some things, when it comes to football I kinda like the leader of the team to be more vocal not a F you im a dick vocal but a guy who can show hes in command and hold others accountable for their screw ups. All the best pull the guy aside and say hey man wth you gotta get your routes on time or whatever they say. The passive QB to me gets overshadowed by diva wideouts and others and doesn't like to confront issues which lead to sloppy play.

I want a QB that says if you don't follow the game plan I'm not going to give you the ball. Thats just my style and it doesn't always work that way just what I personally like. Which is exactly why I loved a coach like Bill Cowher and not Andy Reed.

Andy and Bill both GREAT coaches, proven winners but I don't fell as a fan Andy gives a rats *** about the wins / loses Bill will show you his emotion and as a fan I like to know he gives a ****.. Andy clearly cares but as a FAN the oh their is always next week stuff pisses me off.

I follow the news cycle daily, combine, read the papers everyday and sometimes I feel im more invested in the team than they are (which isnt true, but I want someone on the team to act a fool like I do over it!!!)

I'll be honest...I hate people who try and lead that way whether it be football or life. It's generally annoying and ends with me wanting to pop their teeth out.

A lot of people and players actually despise "loud" leader types not respect them.

LOL! We could use you around where I work. I would love to see that.

My pet peeve is working for someone who has a really big ego. I prefer more of a collaborative style where we all are just trying to get it right, not see who was right. :-)

I'm a Wolfpacker, so I watch a lot of ACC football too. I like Jones and he may end up being a very good one. That being said, like you, I was never just "Wow! This guy is going to be an NFL star!" If we got him later in the rounds, I would be ok with that but our first pick? Man, I just don't know.

I understand I just want our general on the team to be the man. Brady isn’t an ******* and gets respect and players listen. Bree’s as well I don’t however want Phillip Rivers type he’s a complete douche.

It's funny you mention Rivers being a douche type of QB. He's the closest thing to Marino personality wise I have seen in a long time. He reminds me of Marino and how he used to carry himself on the field. I think you have to be somewhat arrogant, cocky, and a little bit of a ******** to play the position. Marino was never scared to hold his players accountable, and he was never afraid to let an opposing defensive player know about a hit he took that was late or overboard.

I think Rivers is really underrated by people. Everything about him reminds me of Marino...even the the way he throws the ball. I love watching Rivers play, and have always thought the "b****" knock on him was unfair.

Rivers has always had an unorthodox delivery, Marino had a perfect delivery. Marino never yelled across the field to the opposing sideline from his bench or got into arguments with every opposing fan behind the bench and didn't stand on the sideline and talk constant sh*t to the opposing offense while they were on the field. That was Rivers.

Daniel Jones is a project for a team like NE or GB Will Grier I think is the most NFL ready but that doesn't mean he will he a star. Kyle Murray who I like goes no. 1 to AZ, Drew Locke I do like but I believe gets grabbed up by Denver.

Statistically Philip Rivers has a really high career passer rating z-score. Among QB's with 3000+ passing attempts he comes in 12th right behind Marino of all people lol.

Steve Young comes in 1st with a z-score of 1.8627 (average for a SB winning QB is around 1 so that shows you how impressive Young was since 1.8627 is his average), Russell Wilson is 7th with a z-score of 1.1217, Marino is 11th at 0.9476 and Philip Rivers is 12th at 0.8320.

Marino was far more impressive for a few select years (especially 1984) so maybe that changes people's perception of the QB, but over a career Rivers is statistically almost as impressive.

    lol.. an astounding 2.2604.

These are Young's year-by-year z-scores (and passing attempts in parenthesis):
    1985: -1.6687 (138)
    1986: -0.7925 (363)
    1987: 4.2433 (69)
    1988: -0.0637 (101)
    1989: 3.7791 (92)
    1990: 1.3872 (62)
    1991: 2.2992 (279)
    1992: 2.7053 (402)
    1993: 2.4145 (462)
    1994: 3.5708 (461)
    1995: 1.1915 (447)
    1996: 2.4149 (316)
    1997: 2.5844 (356)
    1998: 1.8314 (517)
    1999: -1.5140 (84)

Career z-score is weighted by passing attempts and the Tampa years were 1985 and 1986 so as unbelievable as 2.26 is it makes sense (assuming of course all we're doing is removing his Tampa years).

I want a Qb who can win from the pocket and escape pressure and threaten a defense. Why wouldn’t anyone want that, it shouldn’t be specific to me..

    Tannehill couldn’t do it..

Rivers is much better of course I just think he’s overrated relative to his hype about him being a hall of famer..

With the amount of talent that man had played with to not even get close to a super bowl means he’s to blame for some of it..

He’s right up there over the last decade as having the most turnovers..and he does t deal with a constricted pocket very well.

There are lots of QBs I would take over him, dozens and dozens

does z score take into account turnovers ?

We’re talking whether he’s hall of fame material here so I think it’s impirtant to take the criticisms in proper context

Yeah it does because passer rating includes INT%.

These career z-score ratings are clearly highly correlated with HoF, but it's not a perfect correlation. The guys right above Marino are Ken Anderson and Tony Romo, neither of which are in the HoF so I'm not going to argue Rivers should be in the HoF based solely on his z-score rating, though I do think it's worthy of a debate. One difference between Marino vs. Anderson and Romo however is passing attempts. Marino had 8000+ while those two had just under 4500. Thing is, Rivers has 7000. So who knows.

Rivers is definitely a HOF QB. He just happens to be a player that people either love or hate. I personally see a ton of similarities to Dan Marino when he plays, I enjoy watching him, Brees, and Aaron Rodgers more than any other QB's in the game and it'll be a sad day when he retires. I honestly hope the Chargers get a Super Bowl win before he hangs it up.

I never judge anyone, be that a quarterback, a different athlete, or a person in a normal line of work....on how they perform or handle themselves under the very worst conditions. Its a horribly unnecessary and extreme measure. Instead, take a look at the big picture, and see what they do in the other 95%+ of the time, and break it down from there.

I like Daniel Jones, but his velocity is less than stellar. His anticipation is fantastic, but I just don’t think his arm is all that special. I do like the fact that he’s been coached up well by Cutcliffe; who I highly respect.

On another note; does anyone think Miami take a flyer on Josh Rosen? I mean, he was called the best pure passer of last year’s draft by Mike Mayock. I kind of would not be opposed to it....
