Lots of talk about Teddy B. right now, nothing confirmed, but worthy of discussion.

    If the Dolphins acquire him:

1 - We draft a QB high anyway and he's insurance.
    2 - He's a bridge QB until 2020
    3 - He's a bridge QB until 2021
    4 - He's our new franchise QB

If he sucks then it's easy, we've likely auto-tanked and we grab a new QB whenever we can.

If he doesn't suck, then it could affect our chance for a QB in 2020. However, that might not be horrible... because Lawrence isn't eligible until 2021 and there's a decent chance Tua won't declare until 2021. So if he does well, we won't need to have 'tanked' this year, we might get trade value on him, and we can spend this year focusing on other positions. We also then have longer to acquire picks for 2021.

Or, if he's freaking ridiculous, then maybe we don't need another QB...

    Thoughts?

If he is cheap I am fine with it.I won't be happy if we lose our 3rd comp pick for 2020..

Yup, he's already costing us a 3rd round pick...and he likely will not come cheap (cheap relative to RT, but he's likely over the $10M mark). Combined with RT's dead money, he'll actually cost quite a bit more than Tannehill with everything combined. So personally, I'm not okay with him being a stop-gap for a year or two if our potential for winning doesn't increase.

If he’s cheap I’m ok not worth paying 10+ million for a holding place. Pay that to extend or sign out you get guys for a few more years

I’d welcome him with open arms, there is upside there, if he plays well we can flip him for a pick in two years..

For those who want to tank it wouldn’t be a good idea because he’s a better qb than what we’ve had.

And I do understand that position, they wanna make sure we get Tua..

However it’s not in this staffs DNA to try and build a team that will try its hardest but is set up structurally for failure..

The rebuild itself is going to take care of a lot of the stuff that will aid in losing games but that has to happen organically.

The more I think about it the more it feels like 2021 will be the year for Tua or Lawrence. A lot can change in a year, but if there's a top QB in 2020 I suspect it will be someone else.

Assuming we don't go for that someone else and we face a two year wait for a QB then what sort of QB would you want for that period?

If we DON'T SIGN Bridgewater, then the options are extremely limited-

    1) We can pursue another team's backup via trade.
    2) We can draft a QB in 2019 and roll the dice.
    3) We can start Falk/Osweiller and roll the dice.
    4) We can sign Blake Bortles and roll the dice.
    5) We can sign Kaepernick, although he wants $20M a year and brings the media circus
    6) We can start Tannehill

Right now in the current market, that's basically all of our options- RT, Kaep, Falk, Bortles or someone in the draft. I think it's safe to say Osweiller is out and I can't see paying Bortles starter's money. So we really have a 3-man list if you take Kaepernick seriously....just two names if you don't. And both those remaining names are already Miami Dolphins.

One other consideration is that we're planning on a youth movement in Miami, which makes Falk seem like a good of a candidate as anyone. I can't see us moving up to #1 in the draft and betting the farm on Kyler Murray, and I don't think Haskins will make it out of the top 5. We're naturally maybe in Drew Lock or Daniel Jones range? Maybe Will Grier? I don't see them as a definite upgrade over Falk's potential and I can't see spending the pick there. Maybe we take a chance on a guy like Tyree Jackson in the 3rd or 4th round?

So to answer your question, if we don't get Bridgewater, I believe that Tannehill or Falk is our 2019 starting quarterback. I've thought that all along and nothing I see today makes me see things any differently.

One final thought- if we do get Bridgewater, it's going to be in the $12M+ a year guaranteed range, with bonuses surpassing RT's current contract. I don't think Miami will pull the trigger on that kind of cash unless they're 100% sold on him as a long term option (in other words, not a stop-gap). So I really don't think we get him in Miami.

And if we do roll with RT17 or Falk - for how long would you want that? One year or two? Who would be your pick for QB solution as of right now?

I hope you are correct and our FO doesn't panic and overpay Bridgewater. IMO, he's not the answer nor is anyone else available. We are just going to have to gut it out and wait for our opportunity to snag our next franchise QB through the 2020 draft. Until then, I hope we build our team from the inside out so when our QB does come, he has a decent OL in front of him. We ruined Tannehill. I hope we give the next guy a fighting chance.

Honestly, if I were the GM I wouldn't want Tannehill at all since he's bad in the pocket and you have to cover up so much more with scheme. But if I couldn't get anyone better OR considerably cheaper for this season, then I'd start him in 2019 and hope like mad his footwork magically progresses so I can trade him as a legit starter elsewhere. He would strictly be a 1-year plan for me unless we end up in the exact same situation in 2020.

I'll say what I've always said though- you put RT behind a solid, competent line he's a top 10 quarterback. I just don't think we can get there all the way in 4 months. But since we want to be middle or the road (or worse) in 2020....why would we pay more to achieve that when RT is essentially perfect to win 5-7 games?

For Falk, that's impossible to answer because we don't know what we have.....nobody does. If he were to play lights out in camp/preseason then maybe he's our 10-year starter...who knows? From his college tapes though I'd expect him to be a middle tier starter or a quality backup once he develops, which could make him a legit cheap starter for 2019. He's probably the safest guy on the roster at the moment...but all that could change in 4 months. Maybe he doesn't even make the final cuts...we just don't know.

Falk did seem to have a very good feel for reading the defense and I like his core potential, so my money would be on him to be a 2021 starter competing against a rookie. And that would be the best case scenario since we have two young, relatively inexpensive guys fighting it out....it's almost impossible to lose in that situation.

I wanted to get Tyrod Taylor sigh. At least he would have made the next season exciting to watch.

Any veteran QB they bring in this season is only playing 4-5 games.

Assuming we draft a QB which if we stay at #13 could be a horrible idea.

Bummer. I've wanted Teddy B as that "bridge" QB for awhile now. I was bummed, then I was psyched and now I'm bummed again. :favre:

Being patient for another year, then stepping in to lead a pretty good Saints team seems like a wise decision. Why come to Miami and be part of the rebuild struggle for the next 2-3 years? Unless the money was really good -which it wasn't in this case.

We'd go 1-11, then Fitzmagic kicks in to get us 5 wins and the #3 pick in the 2020 draft, behind the Giants and Redskins.

We would be foolish not to wait til 2020 (better QB class) plus if we suck real nice this next season we'll get a prime spot to pick a QB in 2020.

Good things come to those who wait.

Do you have any reason to presume Dolphins are looking to go QB in 19'? The OL and DL have gaps everywhere. Our LB situation is pretty dismal too.

My plan would be Linemen and Backers in 19' QB in 20'
