I get it why some like Rosen, but I just don't. His arm is below average to average in nearly all categories. He doesn't throw well when he's off platform. His deep ball is not good. Sure, when he has time and space he looks good throwing the ball. But isn't that the same thing we said about RT? He's also in the same ballpark with RT in regards to recognizing pressure and feel for the pocket, but he has nowhere near the mobility that RT had/had.
I get the idea about mobility and that some people want that. I don't care, and never want my QB running unless the field is WIDE open and he can then slide without being touched. Personal preference, so be it. But his arm? To me, its a 9/10, easy. His throwing motion is beautiful, and he just has that rubber band snap where he lasers it in there that I drool over. I want to get him, or a QB like him, and then focus on building the OL and an offense around him that lets him do his magic. If I'm forced to field a team where the QB cannot be protected and is forced to constantly make off schedule playground style plays, then I'd rather just give up watching football, personally. If you tell me that 90% of the teams who do well field that type of team, then I'd rather bang my head against the wall indefinately trying to be the 10% who wins my way.
Its not just about being able to make off schedule playground plays. Its about being able to make throws from not great conditions. he doesnt need to run around and make plays, but the NFL is too good at rushing the passer to have to have great conditions. Rosen had this issue going to back to UCLA, so I dont want the whole "no one could survive under the conditions he was in last year". QB after QB come into the league and cant handle this ability. Cant handle throwing from a dirty pocket. Cant handle moving in the pocket. Are ultimately limited to how good they can be. We literally just saw this with Ryan Tannehill. I don't want to go through the **** again.
I understand where you're coming from and why. But I just don't feel the same way. I think that the Fins constantly failed Tannehill with both poor protection and poor coaching, and that Rosen is simply the better prospect. The overall idea with what the team was trying from 2012-2016 was the right one, they just sucked at executing the plan and had the wrong people in place.
There's also a Rosen-specific thread in the Other NFL forum which has some videos and articles discussing him. I didn't watch him last year so I don't have a personal opinion on him, but the best I'm seeing said about him is that he'd rank about second behind all the qb's available this year in terms of talent. That he's good but not great, not a generational talent. If the Dolphins got him for a third or lower I think I'd be comfortable with it. Definitely not a first, and even a second feels too high. If he ends up a high level QB then obviously it would be with it but from what I hear there's a decent risk involved, so at this point I'd rather the Dolphins spent a higher pick on a more promising QB.
I think it depends what you are looking for. For me, he's the best QB since Luck. If I were to rank all of the QBs from 2018-2020, my personal list (for now) would go: 1. Rosen 2. Darnold 3. Fromm 4. Tago 5. Herbert 6. Haskins 7. Lock 8. Mayfield 9. Jones
Rosen is the much better prospect tHan tannehill but tannehill couldn’t deal with a surety pocket like Napoy is saying, so your new Qb better be able to, part of the gig.
Okay, question. You have Mayfield #8 and he played really solid in Cleveland last year...for all intents and purposes he's a franchise QB going into this season. Are you saying that the top 7 also could develop into franchise names....or are you saying that you're just not that impressed with Mayfield? I didn't watch him much last season but what I did see was impressive, so just curious on your rankings. Additionally, if Rosen is your clear #1, then why on Earth is he on the trading block? You don't even have Murray in your top 9 so that also makes me wonder- are all the experts wrong? Give us a little context here on your top 9 poll please.
Fair questions. 1) My list is basically, if I owned a team and could pick one QB from those three drafts to run the type of offense that I want to run for the next ten years, which one would I choose to commit to. Its not an attempt to objectively list which ones I think will have the best NFL careers. Just my personal preferences. 2) I am in no way an expert, just a fan like most of us here. I love football, specifically the mid range passing game, and pocket QBs with strong arms. I crave a strong, predictible, repeatable passing game that controls the clock and garners a ton of first downs and Red Zone trips. I hate chaos football, sandlot style, run around types. 3) As far as Mayfield, I just really don't like him. I really hate his personality, it grates on me. He's also a bit small, and too much of a risk taker for my tastes. 4) I've tried as much as possible to stay out of the Murray debates. I just would never, ever want a small running QB. Ever. I left off Allen of the Bills because I don't like him either. Too wild. 5) My thoughts on the 2020 kids could change, of course, based on how they play this coming season. Herbert especially could plummet below Haskins and Lock.
