We haven't always been successful with our 1st round pick, but since we had decent success with Minkah, I hope this year we can duplicate our efforts. Is there someone who, in your opinion, is a can't miss prospect this year - where we would have a legitimate chance to draft - that would be a perfect fit for us? We need help everywhere, so IMO most position groups are options at 13 or a trade back.
I know I will be alone in this, but maybe my favorite player in this draft is Christian Wilkins. He uses his hands so well and never lets lineman get into his body, unlike someone like Gary that gets bodied all the time but is just disruptive at the college level because his big and fast. To me, what Wilkins shows translates in better against the run and the pass in the NFL.
Safest picks, in my opinion, are Dwayne Haskins (QB), T.J. Hockenson (TE), Jonah Williams (OT/G), A.J. Brown (WR), Chris Lindstrom (G), Christian Wilkins (DT/NT), and Zach Allen (3-4 DE/4-3 DT). There are superior, higher skill-ceiling prospects, but these guys will be successful barring some catastrophic injury.
Let me change the question slightly, if at #13 Oakland offered you their #24 and #27. What players available at #13 would make you turn down that offer?
Def: Nick Bosa, Quinnen Williams, Josh Allen, Ed Oliver Maybe: Montez Sweat, Jawaan Taylor, Jonah Williams, Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins Move Down: Brian Burns, Drew Lock, Daniel Jones, Devin White, Rashan Gary, etc.
Its a good question. There aren't many who are likely to be available who would make me turn that down. Frankly, that offer from Oakland is my number one choice for this year's draft! Of guys who aren't expected to be picked in the top five, I would say Ed Oliver and Montez Sweat would likely be my top two. Though I would be happy to take any number of other players if the trade down offer wasn't there.
Yeah the question came to me when I was doing a mock draft where I was offered exactly that but Ed Oliver was still on the board. I was trying to work out at what point do our multitude of needs outweigh the talent available. The best version of this deal I've had (Which has only happened once out of the hundreds of attempts I've done) was where everyone I was super keen on at #13 was gone, so I traded with the Giants for #15 and #5 in the 2nd round. Then got offered #24 and #27 for #15.
Kipper and McShay have us taking Either Gary or Oliver. Who do you like better? When it comes to his motor, is Gary another Jordan Phillips?
Murray and Haskins. Non QB division, you would need to offer a ton to budge me off Ed Oliver or Christian Wilkins. That's probably about it (aside from no brainer but no chance guys like Bosa and Quinnen and Allen).
Oliver over Gary. Gary just didnt produce the way you want an elite prospect to produce. He didnt do much of anything really, especially this year. While both took the latter half of the season off, Oliver at least was a total wrecking ball for his time. Gary has the elite athlete measurables that will get him drafted early, and if he harnesses that, he will be a terror ... but I would let someone else take that risk unless the draft really fell a particular way. Of pass rush, I'd rather go after a Sweat or Ferrell or maybe even Burns than Gary.
I understand taking athletic freaks who have potential but, I am hoping for some high motor guys who have proven production.
Agreed. I don't mind doing it later on in the draft, but earlier on then I don't want to take the risk of players who don't have the production to suddenly get results against a higher calibre of opposition.
I know I shouldn't, but the Dion Jordon pick still haunts me. Couple that with the Bucky Brooks' go for the doubles instead of swinging for the fence draft philosophy and I am in the just get solid football players camp. My idea rebuild would be to establish, as the core, guys who play like William Hayes. Who, IMO, is assignment sound, and just does his job. He's not flashy, isn't really a star, but he makes a huge difference when he is on the field. Plus, his contract isn't crazy either, so if you could have a team full of guys like Hayes, you can manage your cap. When the time is right and we have a very good core established we can make a splash in FA to put the icing on the cake, so to speak.
So pumped to get Wilkins. This is one of the few times ive loved a player before the draft and Miami got him.
Cant miss in this draft is Quinnen Williams, really REALLY high ceiling, and a high floor. I am saying this as someone who doesnt believe in taking Alabama defenders because they rarely get much better than they played at Bama
