The Dolphins signed Bobby McCain to a deal that made him one of the NFL’s highest-paid nickel cornerbacks a year ago. He’s now playing safety.

“Being in the middle of the field is definitely a different challenge,” McCain said, via Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. “But I can get it done.”

The Dolphins are loaded at safety with Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald and McCain as well as Minkah Fitzpatrick, who also can play nickel, cornerback and linebacker.

McCain has played safety in the past, including nine snaps at strong safety last season.

“I played it a little bit a couple of years back,” McCain said. “Being a nickel you have to drop back and be responsible for some half coverages, but this is my first time.”

Salguero wondered whether the team’s move of McCain to free safety could signal the Dolphins’ intent to shop Jones, who has skipped the voluntary portions of the offseason program. McDonald has shifted from free safety, where he mostly played last season, to strong safety.

McCain, though, is ready to do his part wherever that is, and that might mean more than one spot.

“I think he’s smart enough definitely to move around,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores said. “He can play corner; he can play safety; he can play nickel; he can play a variety of positions. He’s a smart player, and a guy who’s made a lot of plays in this league. We’re looking forward to working with him.”

I think the Dolphins would take any reasonable compensation for Jones.

Ever since we drafted Minkah, we have had a problem keeping our best players on the field. It seems like a solid player is constantly sitting on the bench. Ironically, having too many good safeties has caused problems. My guess is that if they are sliding McCain to safety, that means Minkah will probably be spending a majority of his time at slot. I honestly think that is his most natural position. I love having him near the line. He is exceptional in coverage, and he is a great tackler.

I think it would be more difficult than you realize to trade Jones. First of all, Eric Berry is still a free agent. If a team wanted a big name safety, I think most would rather go for Berry because they wouldn't have to surrender a draft pick to acquire him. On the other hand, Tre Boston is still available. Now, you are probably saying to yourself, "I would rather have Jones over Boston, and it isn't even close." True, but as the Rolling Stones once said, "You can't always get what you want." I think the teams would rather have Jones, but don't want his contract. Including this year, he still has three years left on his deal with lots of guaranteed money, and he is on the wrong side of thirty. There may be a few teams willing to do that, but not many.

My guess is that we either keep him, or he is an midseason trade to a team with poor safety play or an injury.

With the way the league is I think we need all the safety and corner help we can get.

Nothing against McCain, but I doubt his move to safety is an indication of Jones being traded.

Exactly. I think it shows Flores values versatility.

You don’t need to wait until the excrement hits the rotating cooling device before developing Plan B.

I get that, and I'm not saying Reshad is a lock not to be moved. But moving McCain to safety doesn't seem like a good Plan B.

Miami Dolphins’ Reshad Jones will have to earn starting spot, Brian Flores says
    https://www.palmbeachpost.com/sport...-have-to-earn-starting-spot-brian-flores-says

Brian Flores could have said that Reshad Jones has earned his position as a starter in the league and on the Miami Dolphins.

Instead, Flores said Jones will have to earn his spot.

“I think everyone’s got to work to start in this league and on this team,” Flores said Wednesday, when asked about Jones. “I think there’s no doubt about that. I would say there’s no sacred cows, not in this game.”

Flores expects Jones to be in attendance. And he expects Jones will compete with players like Minkah Fitzpatrick, T.J. McDonald and Bobby McCain for playing time.

“I think you have to earn what you get,” Flores said. “That’s the case for everyone on the team. I think I’ve said that over and over again.”

If the Dolphins were to release Jones after June 1, there would be a cap hit of $25.4 million spread out over the next two years, according to Spotrac.

Miami can do better in a trade scenario, with a cap hit around $12 million over two seasons. But there probably aren’t too many teams in the market for a 31-year-old safety at this type of contract rate.

It will likely be up to the Dolphins to get the most from Jones this season, as he would be one of the few highly-paid veterans over 30 left on the squad, and then re-evaluate the situation after the 2019 season.

Jones’ potential dead cap hit drops to just $10.2 million after next season, according to Spotrac.

I dont neccesarily think it's to trade Jones, but I'm glad they are giving others a shot because in the event things go south we wont have our pants down.

I used to be a big fan of Jones and was a huge advocate of signing him long term but hes been disappointing lately to me. If he was just another guy on the team I wouldnt care about some minor things, but IMO Jones should be a leader by example out there especially with a new staff.
