Me neither, the team is not in position to pay a player like this, to far from competing for a championship, too much uncertainty at Qb.

Get through the year, evaluate what you have and what you wanna move forward with, draft the best Qb you can and then start maxing your cap.

Big pass on that.. and i like clowney but i dont think he moves the needle. We arent a team that is a pass rusher away. We are a quarterback away from being a serious playoff contender (just like any team is) and then you fill ouut the rest of your squad with luxury pieces like clowney..

I'm sure the Dolphins have an interest in a lot of players, it's just a case of how big an interest it is and who in the organisation the interest is from.

If they'd take a third and fifth rounder for him? Sure. Otherwise we need those picks to move up for a QB or to fill holes on the roster.

Man oh man, you guys are afraid to part with draft picks. Last two edge guys we drafted in the first round were Dion Jordan (don't forget that we used a 2nd as well to move up to get him) and Charles Harris.

Jordan was a total disaster in every sense of the word, and honestly, Harris isn't even worthy of an NFL roster.

We need pass rushers and Clowney is a known commodity.

You guys can say whatever you want about future draft picks, but nothing is certain. If we have all the draft picks in the world and the teams above us are unwilling to trade the pick, it might not matter.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush...

Wait, so if we trade away our first rounder for Clowney, but end up needing to draft a QB, then what? Solve your biggest problem, then move on the second biggest and so on. The biggest issue for any any team is finding a QB.

The only way I think Miami could trade for Clowney is if they give up Tunsil

I guess that's the true question, what would be the most that people would be willing to accept us giving away for Clowney?

That would complete the nightmare scenario for the OL. They really need to find a trade for a Guard or hope a solid vet gets cut and they can grab him. At best, the OL could rise to about average this year.

Trade them Fitz, Stills and they can pick a RB. That would be a fleecing.

If not giving up the first round pick, I say it's worth it. I don't know why they would want a WR, but RB makes sense with Miller going down. This would also help our secondary tremendously, as they wouldn't have to cover as long.

Should be interesting to see JJ Watts production after Clowney is gone.. honestly his comeback last year was a unique transition when you have jadaveon giving that pressure on the edge.

Well with Lamar going down they do have a need at running back. I could see either Drake or Ballage going. My guess is Drake is probably wanting to go since he really doesn't get used as much as he thinks he should be. Package him and maybe a third round pick or even Stills, that's assuming Flores really is down on him. I have no idea if they need another receiver in Houston though.

If that made sense in Miami, then we wouldn't have just given away two talented veteran ends.

Now we need to go buy one again? For what? So we can give him away next summer as well?

    • KENYAN DRAKE, MIAMI DOLPHINS
      [IMG]
The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson mentions Kenyan Drake and Kenny Stills as possible trade bait in a potential deal for unsigned Texans franchise player Jadeveon Clowney.
Jackson has both Drake and Stills making the Dolphins' 53-man roster as it stands now, but that could change if Miami and Houston can come to terms on a Clowney deal. Miami has made it known its higher-priced veterans are available in the right deals, and both Drake and Stills fit that category. They also happen to play positions of need for the Texans with Houston losing Lamar Miller to a torn ACL and Keke Coutee (ankle) unlikely to be ready Week 1. Drake would form an interesting tandem with Duke Johnson. And Stills would give Deshaun Watson another reliable threat outside in what looks like a top-heavy receiver group.

Clowney is 26 and an all-pro talent.

Robert Quinn sucked here and Cam Wake is 38. I don't think your argument makes sense here.

Clowney has a no-trade clause so wherever he ends up is where he wants to be.

Well, we had Quinn and Wake....older or not, we have nobody now (including Clowney). How do you cut contributing veterans with the hope of signing someone else in six months or a year....when the season kicks off in a few weeks? I just don't understand it and like I said, DE is not the only positional group we did that with.

This is a surprise. Not only are Flores and Grier pursuing him now--they're getting to him before he hits free agency in 2020. That sense of urgency is telling; they think Clowney can be an integral part of Miami's defense. I was hesitant at first, but I trust their judgment. Go get him.

Ballage + a 2nd/3rd? Houston just traded for Duke Johnson, who already has a similar skillset to Drake. Coutee, their slot WR, is hurt as well. Wonder if there's any interest in Albert Wilson.

Not sure I would be okay with trading Tunsil or Xavien (or Baker, or Minkah) this year, but everybody else would be fair game. However, if it were a situation where we had to trade a guy and picks to get Lawrence the year after next, then everybody would be on the table. If I am the GM, I am doing everything I can to get ourselves a franchise QB. If I can't get that QB, then I am doing everything I can to build our OL into a top 10 unit. OL would be a priority in my administration. Vote for me. ;-)

Sounds like a lot of risk on this because if we do trade for him, we can’t sign him to a long term deal until after the season.

If Houston is trying to get what they can and salvage this and Miami believes he’d resign, I wouldn’t be upset if we traded a 2nd and a player like Stills, Wilson or Parker.

He would need to agree to the trade, I get the feeling he doesn't want to play in Miami by the sounds of the articles I read, what I read is he wants Philadelphia or Seattle.

Man, Clowney has never even gotten to 10 sacks in a year while having the advantage of being in the NFL for 5 full seasons and playing beside JJ Watt on a pretty good defense. I don't particularly love the guy. I was worried when I heard Miami might be interested. He wasn't a bust but he was a high pick that turned out pretty unremarkable.

While he may be solid, I don't know any Texans fans who are dying to keep him. They seem generally okay at the thought of losing him, some even dislike him and view him as a sort of bust considering what they gave up.

Maybe a guy like that just needs a fresh start but let's not do what the NYG did and give up a ton for a guy who's on the level of Olivier Vernon.

The expectations with Clowney were really high for him coming out. He didn't meet those. To me, he's not the kind of player you trade a bunch of picks for, especially not anything like your #1.

Like a lot of you, I'd be okay with the Dolphins trading a peripheral player like Stills or someone like that but certainly not anyone young and important like Tunsil, Baker, Fitzpatrick or Howard. No way.

I trust Flores knows what he wants for his defense but man, I sincerely hope we keep all the young talent we have that looks to be above average.

I'd be okay with Drake leaving. A solid DE is probably harder to find than a shifty RB. There will always be solid RB options in the draft and they can generally start right away. I also doubt Miami will re-sign Drake if he wants a lot. Maybe a Drake/Clowney thing happens?

For what it's worth, Miami believes that they're the front-runner in landing him (per the Herald). He has met with us and it sounds like the meeting went well.

If the plan is to build the defense now and the offense later I could see it. With a stout dominating defense you can win games with FGs and Flores certainly knows defenses. If the price is right and the guy actually wants to play here I could support it cause it puts to rest any idea of tanking the season.

One thing to remember is next year we will have an absurd amount of cap space to get a long term deal in place with him. We will be able to pay him like I assume he wants to be paid. Not saying we will, just saying the cap space will be there. That kind of thing could sway him into coming to Miami in a trade.

    As they say, Money Talks!

Yes, but we'd also have to pay his $15M franchise tag this season...there's no way to negotiate around that. And if he's not happy in Miami then he could walk in a year anyway; I'd want some extra equity here to make the trade happen. It's a real gamble.

Clowney is much more versatile than those two. Not as proven as Wake, but a better fit for Flores' defense. He can rush from the edge, from the inside, and standing up on the end of the LOS or even in a quasi-4-3-OLB role. Flores' wants to be able to disguise his alignments and have guys that can rush the passer when their eventual number is called.

I hope we don't end up signing him to some huge deal. I don't think he's worth it. I just don't think he has the attitude of someone you want to build around. He's in his prime and the Texans are looking to ditch him? That's not good.

If he's looking for a payday, that's bad for us. I would focus on bringing in someone who can either be a franchise player or a steal. I think Clowney is that average guy with whom you can easily end up underwater.
