It wasn't a bad article, but one of two reasons they like him is his elite deep ball accuracy. Anyone who watched the 1st preseason game though knows that was Preston Williams just out-willing (and out-jumping) opponents...so that bothers me a little. Whenever Rosen was in trouble, he found the guy and launched it; someone like Stills or Grant won't come down with the ball in tight coverage like Williams does. Since Williams probably won't be a starter anyway, I'm a little worried about PFF's accuracy there.
Thanks for comments, Key. The PFF article was excellent in terms of going deeper than typical "stats" - esp reinforcing Rosen's accuracy incl his deep passing. If the QB can put it in a catchable zone for a receiver, it's up to him to go get it. I would guess all QBs throw 50/50 deep balls and allow the receiver to make a play. If they can't, the team needs to get a better receiver. btw, Rosen's recent presser was quite informative when he stated he never had training/instruction on how to read the front 7 defenders. That is an indictment of his coaches at UCLA & especially AZ. That he has progressed so far so fast is indicative of his intellect. Rosen's physical tools have never been questioned so kudos to Miami's coaches for recognizing this missing link and coaching him up to become a very good QB.
Don't get me wrong, I really like Rosen as a prospect. It's just too early to say he has elite deep ball accuracy since Williams looked like a HOF receiver being covered by high school players. All of those deep ball stats come from PS1...so take them with a grain of salt until it can be substantiated across several games. It was definitely promising and super fun to watch...we're just not sure if that could be an every-week thing or not.
I'm not really concerned with Rosen's deep ball one way or the other this season. The OL isn't likely to give him enough time to set up many of those throws anyways. What we need is the ability to set up, diagnose who's open in the intermediate level, and fire him a quick and accurate spiral, over and over. I don't think that's Fitzpatrick's game at all, so even if I didn't feel as high on Rosen's long term potential as I do, I'd still say he's the right QB for this offense this year.
Josh Rosen is doomed to fail if Fitzpatrick does not start. His wish on the Monkey's Paw will doom Rosen. DOOM ROSEN!
Huh??, Tannehill has 0 ability manipulating a pocket with quickness, vision, or gracefulness, nor did the guy have the intellect as how to mitigate that pressure by consciously checking a defense by running upfield. Rosen has shown He does both..
That wasnt my point at all but sure? It was repeatedly said that a QB shouldnt need a pocket to be successful. I'm not saying YOU said that personally but it has been said here many times. Then here people talk about not starting Rosen because of the line. My only point is that is a contradiction towards the previous attitude because it's more convenient now. Nothing to do with how Tannehill plays which I've said 3 times now. I'm comparing fan attitudes about the situation.
sorry man... I think they are different situations, and while not starting Rosen until the line finds some cohesiveness is one of the reasons to start Fitz until the bye, there are other reasons as well that has more to do with his youth, his 3rd system in 1 year, the fact that he said he’s not there yet, etc
Rosen. Learn by doing, get in there and throw the rock. Ship Fitzpatrick off to the Colts or someone.
Not saying there arent some legitimate reasons. I want Rosen out there by game 5. I'd like at least 3 quarters of the season for him to show his good and bad.
IMO you never hurt a QB's development by giving him time to learn. However, the sink or swim approach often destroys QB prospects. I see no advantage in putting him in to fail starting week 1. Odds are he'll look a lot like the guy that was forced to start too early in Arizona. I'd keep Rosen out until the bye.
I would have been ok with Rosen starting. I think he did enough to earn it. However, I can see why we went with Fitzpatrick. The Ravens have been a tough team in the past. They are well-coached, and their defense usually gives us fits. Add that to the extra time they will have to prepare for us; I can see why they went with the vet. If our OL was rock solid and had some playing time together under their belt, I could see us going with Rosen. Since they don't know each other very well, have trouble communicating, don't win their one on one matchups very often (except for Tunsil), and are a pretty feeble group in general, I see Fitzpatrick either running for his life or getting himself clobbered. Rosen may not start, but he may end up having to finish the game.
