Fullest look at the possible plans for the Dolphins that I've seen so far.

PFF give their opinions on whether a 1 or 2 year tank is the plan.
    Is that a valid plan?
What if they're just horrible at drafting?
Should it be Tua, Lawrence - or maybe both?
Will the Dolphins be the first true intentional tank job in the NFL?
If so, will the NFL respond to change the draft system?

    Starts from 36:10.

"Having the draft capital to pounce" is my favorite phrase so far. I like that we are doing everything we can to get our guy. Rebuilding and laying down a new foundation sort of sums up our plan. It makes much more sense than the fill the potholes strategy we have had for the last two decades.

God I pray to God we are not STUPID enough to spend all of this draft capital just to roll the dice on a single player, when our team still has so many holes. That would be the STUPIDEST thing we could do!!!

Rebuild this team from the ground up. Build an offensive line that can stop a freight train. Build a defensive line that swarms opposing offensive lines like a tsunami. Once those bases are built, you can run all over teams. This team, the city of Miami and so many of the fans here have been quarterback, quarterback, quarterback. While I've NEVER discounted the need for a GOOD quarterback, I've always advocated for a strong base in the offensive and defensive lines that we've lacked for years.

If anyone here disagrees with me, I ask them to HONESTLY ask themselves what would have happened to Drew Brees had we won that Lotto...or Luck for that matter...we would STILL be in the dumpster because we as an organization have forgotten the most basic principle of football...and that is taking and holding real estate and the only way you take and hold real estate is with solid lines on BOTH side of the ball

I hear ya but, disagree. IMO we need to get our franchise QB first. I hope we don’t need to spend more than our 1st on one so we have the other picks, but I am for doing all we can and if it means giving up picks that is ok with me.

This is actually interesting. They talk about how 1 team tanking (e.g., Browns or now the Dolphins) isn't a problem but when you have as they put it ~1/3 of the teams "tanking" in baseball it's a problem for the league. And that the NFL needs to do something to keep the hope alive that teams are never that far away.

I have an idea: don't make the game so easy for the QB and passing offense that the QB has this totally outsized influence on the game! The tanking is so much due to trying to get that franchise QB and the NFL is pushing teams towards this strategy.

I’ve been saying that for the past several years now. The parity the league once had, and that made the game the most popular sport in the country, is now gone. No longer is it the case that you can be a fan of any team and have a decent chance to make the playoffs in any given year.

Note the rise in popularity of fantasy football. Fans of a lot of teams have to resort to fantasy now, to accomplish winning. Reality isn’t going to do it for them.

Well.. I had to do some data mining to see what's actually been happening. So this is what I found:

What I'm doing there is looking at standard deviation in win% for every team (gray lines) over a 5-year window plotted at the beginning of that 5-year window on the x-axis (only started this from the 1970 merger) to see if that's changed recently. Red line is the league average.

What's most striking is the effect of the 1994 salary cap. Standard deviation of win% over a 5 year window has generally been higher after the salary cap showing that it has its intended effect of increasing parity. And while it's true that there's been a very slight average decrease in parity since then, it doesn't look like the NFL's rules have hurt overall parity that much. So I guess right now they don't have too much to worry about but we'll see about the future.

Is it possible that the distribution in win percentage has become more bimodal, where you have the teams with the best quarterbacks winning a great deal, and the teams with the worst quarterbacks doing very poorly, and with the league-wide standard deviation in win percentage not changing significantly?

Doesn't look like it. First graph below color codes win% for each team for each year (regular season only). Second graph sorts the values with the dark blue/purple at the bottom representing "teams that didn't exist at that time". The 3-letter codes for the teams should be self explanatory (I use the pro-football-reference codes) but a few might not: oti is for Tennessee and sdg is now LA Chargers. Anyway, that 2nd graph below shows that distribution of win% since 1970 hasn't become bimodal.
