Alabama's offense last year was simple. They have a new OC this year and it's different, more complex. I won't say it's comparable to an NFL offense as that's beyond my ability to compare, but it's certainly more advanced than last year.

I haven't watched any Alabama (or any college games) this year so I don't know how Tua is playing either. My hope with any QB we draft is he has great pocket awareness. I watched a Green Bay game the other day and Rodgers does a great job of handling the pressure. That's the standard I am looking for because as much as I hope we rebuild the OL right this time around, I realize that defenses will find a way to get pressure. How our QB handles that pressure is everything and will probably determine whether they succeed at this level or not, IMO.

There are different types of pressure.

The type where a QB is facing one, sometimes two rushers but generally has space in the rest of the pocket to move and at least get rid of the ball.

Then the type where 2-3 rushers collapse different parts of the pocket leaving the QB with no place to really maneuver himself.

The first is acceptable. The second is a nightmare.

I agree. That's why I also think we need to make building the OL a priority and stop treating the squad like they are an afterthought.

I'm just talking about development-wise.i truly believe that if Tannehill played on that team that Ryan had to start, he would have looked incredible. You wouldn't have really even seen the deficiencies that drove us crazy. That's all I'm saying. I don't think putting Matt Ryan on the Dolphins would have changed a whole hell of a lot the past 10 years.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to watch as much college ball as I'd like because of my work schedule, but I've watched college ball for years. There is one common factor though in most college games, on either side of the ball, there are only 5 or 6 NFL caliber players on either side of the ball. Some of those players will never see the NFL, so in that aspect, there are some running backs, some wide receivers and some quarterbacks who will excel in the NFL. On the other side of that coin, there are some that regardless of the college success, will never succeed in the NFL. Once these players who do reach the NFL, instead of playing against 5 or 6 NFL caliber players, and the rest only college level, now they are playing against 11 NFL caliber players. Things they were able to do in college, they can't always do because now they are facing much better players than they played against in college.

Two things Tua has going for him in his soon to be transition to the NFL is he has played for one of the most prolific coaches in the NCAA in Nick Saban. There's no doubt this kid has learned a lot under his tutelage. Additionally, he's played in the SEC...the most competitive conference in the NCAA. He's faced fierce competition and has had great success. These two aspects favor Tua but as he is on the New England Patriots of the NCAA, he's had incredible talent around him that has contributed to his success, but being in the SEC means he's been surrounded by great talent, including Saban that has contributed to his success and once he gets drafted by a crappy desperate team, there goes all the talent that surrounded him while he was in college.

    Its a conundrum.

Repeating what I have said. It won't matter unless you can find people who can block, catch the ball and rush the passer with coaches that bring the best out of them.
I am okay going with Rosen and building a team around him. Drafting a raw prospect, even in mid/late round 1, to watch, listen and learn too.

Against top 30 defenses Tuas numbers last year were

    6 TD 6 INT
    43 QBR
    58% completion percentage

he has yet to face a top 30 defense this season but its coming. He reminds me too much of Mariota. Pass

Show me the QB who has had to carry his average or less team, while making plays and giving them a chance in most games. The QB who has great talent around him makes me wonder how he'd do with lesser talent. Which isn't to say Tua is not the answer, but it's hardly a "can't miss" move to draft him.

Dolphins fans are desperate for an answer.. and they see ESPN who has a contract with the SEC talk about Tua all the time like he is some generational quarterback. So its very simple to understand why hes the talk..

Tua may very well turn out to be a good quarterback maybe even a great one, but hes not a guy i draft to a team that is going through an overhaul. Hes a guy i put behind Brees to take over an established Saints’ franchise when his time is up. In my opinion he is very raw and you can say whatever you want about Alabamas offense but that offense is very simple. The receivers carry it. He isnt asked to be creative like Deshaun Watson was in Clemson, and still is doing those same things today.

Chris Grier has to let Oshea and Flores do all the background check on Tua if theyre truly considering him, and make sure that he checks all the boxes. Make sure his personality and leadership skills are as strong as they need to be, that his understanding of a complex system like the Patriots run is something that he can handle. That he can memorize and call plays (lots of starting quarterbacks right now are having this issue btw, LOTS..)..

And most of all can they see this guy start a dynasty. The Dolphins have a ridiculous amount of draft picks and cap space galore. Brady has 3 years left and is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and Belichick will likely follow. This new upcoming decade is for the Dolphins to grab.

in my opinion, i dont think tua is that guy. He is too raw.. but we will see very soon how he handles some big sec matchups, the sec championship game and the playoff.

Im watching the Bama/Texas A&M game. Im just not impressed with his game. Im definitely impressed with the receivers. Henry Ruggs catch radius is insane, Jeudy reminds me of Larry Fitzgerald, he just makes it look easy.. devonta is a stud, and that bubble screen touchdown by Waddle was ridiculous. Plus his returns have been great.

i did not like the INT he threw in the redzone, i do not like that he struggles on a short field (down and goal inside the 10 he struggles, much like Matt Ryan does). And i do not like his arm strength. Those balls are floating, even when he throws it in the flat its not coming out fast enough, those throws will get eaten alive at the pro level.

he has had some good ball placement at some of his deep throws, but as i said before he reminds me too much of Mariota in college.. when the windows get tight, and thwyre always tight in the NFL, he struggles.

And this is Texas AM, the same defense that was getting torched by Arkansas backup qb 2 weeks ago..

I'm watching too. Tui is not the best QB on the field today. That Mond kids a baller. FOOTBALL PLAYER, big balls. His arm looks livelier, he is making good decisions, and he is the offense, they have no running game at all. I would still take the pick if Tui was available, but I wouldn"t give up anything to move up for him.

Best player on the field is Bamas Center Dickenson. He needs to be a Dolphin. Him and Patrick Surtains baby boy.

I like Mond but the way he plays is a little reckless. If he wants to be a starter someday in the NFL he needs to learn to slide or throw the ball away. he has taken many unnecessary hits the last two seasons.. lots of the sacks he takes are his own doing...

I still like Tua. I don't buy that he is raw or its all because of his team. That said I am looking more closely at Jalen Hurts. I watched a bit of that game yesterday and came away thinking I need to see more. I don't like Herbert at all and I'm not a fan of Fromm.

Burrow is intriguing and is growing on me too. He might be my QB2 right now, behind Tua, but.... at this point, right, I'd be cautiously optimistic if we took either one. At the very least I feel more confident about those two right now, than any of the others. Burrow might just look like QB1 by the end of the season if he keeps this up. There's a leadership quality about him that feels like he's going to be a good QB.

I'm thinking that Jalen Hurts has a lot of upside to him. Out of all these guys he seems to have a much higher ceiling. Since he has been starting at Oklahoma he seems to be more comfortable throwing downfield than he was at Alabama. He got himself into a funk thowing dinks and dunks and running too much. Pretty much the stuff that cost him his starting job in Alabama. It will be interesting to watch the rest of the year.

    My updated list:

    In:
    1. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama (-)
    2. Jacob Eason, Washington (+2)
    3. Jake Fromm, Georgia (-)
    4. Joe Burrow, LSU (unranked)
    5. Josh Rosen (-3)
    6. Justin Herbert, Oregon (-1)
    7. Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma (+1)
    8. Sam Ehlinger, Texas (+2)
    9. Anthony Gordon, Washington State (unranked)
    10. Kellen Mond, Texas A&M (unranked)

    Out:
    Steven Montez, Colorado (-2)
    K.J. Costello, Stanford (-4)
    Jordan Love, Utah State (-5)

    Guys I'm Watching:
    Mason Fine, North Texas
    Tommy DeVito, Syracuse
    Brian Lewerke, Michigan State
    Jack Abraham, Southern Miss
    Cole McDonald, Hawaii

Might also be worth noting that Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, and Cam Newton are likely FA's next year. I'm not really interested in any of them, but hey, they're there. If the club doesn't end up being sold on any of the 2020 prospects, maybe they take a flier on Mariota/Winston for a season and grab Lawrence or Fields in '21.

But for what it's worth, I'm still on the Tua Train.

I would switch Fromm and Hurts on your list. I think Eason will need to come back for one more year to get better, but he's got an NFL arm. (9 and 10 don't matter) but Mond might be worth a look in 2021. I would absolutely take a 5th rd flyer on Cole McDonald from Hawaii, kid can spin it.

If Eason does come out this year he's dumb. He won't get into early first round, maybe not first round at all. If he was there in 2nd after Phins picked whomever in 1st rd I'd pick him too. Game on

I had Mahomes as the # 1 overall pick as a sophomore and junior, and the future NFL MVP, on the record here, so I’m not sure what you are talking about, Ken Dorsey was an obvious college Qb who could not be pro..so that’s a bizarre comparison.

I forgot about Deshaun Watson I had him as a blue chip prospect that was going underrated in the draft, but he and Mahomes were in the same class, Kyler Murray last year I had #1 overall worthy, forgot about him.

So I take it you don’t think Tua is worthy of hi draft status?

    From SBNation - https://www.sbnation.com/college-fo...tua-tagovailoa-injury-leg-knee-status-updates

    "Oct. 10
Alabama head coach Nick Saban told reporters leading up to a home game against Missouri that Tua had been dealing with a sprained knee.

“He did put a brace on it just to kind of protect him,” Saban told reporters. “But he’s been able to do all of the work in practice, so that’s not an issue.”

Three days later on game day, Tua suffered what looked like a re-aggravation of the right knee injury after he slid. He jogged off the field and entered the medical tent.

The Tide were up 30-10 at the time, so Hurts entered and finished the 29-point victory.

    Oct. 20
Against Tennessee, Tua looked to have tweaked his knee again after he was slow to get up following a TD pass.
Hurts once again came in and finished the game, and the Tide won 58-21.

    Nov. 3
Alabama had a bye to prepare for LSU, which gave Tua some more time to get healthy. He battled his knee injury throughout, leaving for a play in the first quarter, and was shaken up after throwing a TD pass in the third. Tua makes a house call, but comes up limping at the end of it. He finished the game though, and had three total touchdowns on the night.

    Nov. 10
Against Mississippi State, Tua left after taking a big hit. Tua limped off the field and into the injury tent after this hit. Mac Jones came in at quarterback. Hurts was dealing with an ankle injury. Hurts was seen with his helmet on, but never went in, and Tua didn’t return.

Tua suffered a high ankle sprain on Dec. 1 during Alabama’s SEC Championship against Georgia. He underwent surgery shortly after, but as of three days before kickoff vs. the Sooners, he told reporters that the ankle was closer to 85 percent better than 100...

...Early in the fourth quarter of Dec. 1’s SEC Championship, as Tagovailoa was making a throw, offensive lineman Jonah Williams backed into him and stepped on his right ankle.

But this wasn’t the only injury he dealt with this game — he had an apparent left ankle injury earlier in the SEC title game. On a couple of occasions, he walked with a visible limp, and even went into the injury tent at one point, but he didn’t miss any snaps before suffering the sprain. After he threw an interception to Georgia’s Richard LeCounte, he limped off:

The December surgery Tua underwent to repair his ankle required a two-week recovery time.

Bama hasn’t come out and specifically said what Tua had done to his ankle in surgery, but one of the team’s doctors has discussed a device used to repair torn ligaments in the past:

Alabama team doctor Norman Waldrop has been an outspoken advocate of the TightRope in previous interviews and speeches. In a 2017 interview posted on YouTube, Waldrop said it requires as two-inch incision and can have players walking by the fourth or fifth day after the operation. They can run by Day 8 or 9 and cutting whenever it’s comfortable enough to do so.

“We call it a stitch job,” said Alabama left tackle Jonah Williams who had the procedure in January after a high-ankle sprain in the CFP title game. “Just throw some wires in there, and you know.”"

Gotcha. I only knew about the ankle personally and one injury before that as well actually but didnt know it was serious.

Either way I'm not sure that impacts the things that matter at the NFL level like ability to read a defense. Though obviously against elite competition it impacts final #'s

Honestly right now Tua is the best QB in the draft to me but I still dont see him as any better than somewhere between Matt Leinart and J. Winston success wise.

I'm personally hoping Burrow shows something more.

If we are going to draft a quarterback top 10 it has to be him..

Hes got the same size and mobility as Mahomes... the way he just felt the pocket collapse and was able to go backwards 15 yards and still get a completion.. he just has it.. wouldnt shock me if LSU beats Alabama. Itll definitely be high scoring.. alabamas defense has some holes that Texas AM exploited.. and Joe Burrow with that fast pace offense can definitely do damage

A full moon passed by college sports yesterday.. lots of weird things happened all day long.

Wisconsin 31 point favorite loses to Lovie Smiths Fighting Illini.
    Missouri losing to lowly Vanderbilt
UM losing to Georgia Tech. UM was 19 point favorites in the game.

Tua suffers a high ankle sprain. Saban says Tua is out atleast two weeks and will return against LSU in 2 weeks, likely not 100%. LSU is going to test his mobility that game. Its the same ankle he injured last year in the SEC championship game and had surgery on. Took him till May to be fully healed.
