Okay, but you have to admit the leg injuries (despite taking few hits) and Alabama plugging a new QB in and not missing a beat are (while not quite red flags) cause for concern when it comes to drafting Tua. Look at what the Bears are going through right now. They have a playoff roster team EXCEPT they lack a QB to get them there. Or at best they are one-and-done. The Bears front office picked the wrong QB at #2. Can you imagine what Mahomes would be doing on that team? With that defense? Despite all the good decisions they made in building the team, they got the QB pick wrong and now will waste the cheap/prime years of their defense. They also lack the resources to find another QB in the draft any time soon, unless they hit on a guy in the later rounds (really long odds). Miami can't get this QB choice wrong because even if they hit on the other high draft picks, they'll right back at 7-9 win seasons again if the QB is not good-great.
With all of the trades Miami has implemented this year in stockpiling draft picks, and after some reflecting on the current state of the Dolphins, this is what I would like to see. Now in my own personal opinion if we were to draft a quarterback this year, it's going to be a Greek tragedy. Miami has way too many holes that need to be filled. Although the sports writers gave props to the Dolphins this past week for the their offensive line play, that's still been our Achilles heel offensively...it has been for years. What I would like to see happen is the following... Draft offensive and defensive linemen...find that Toni Boselli, Jake Long. Find that Cameron Wake, Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas. Get the foundation set. At the same time, as we have so many draft picks, use those picks in trades during the draft to accumulate even more draft picks, if not for this year's draft, then the following years. Continue to build the trenches and gain draft picks. Now as I see it, if we follow this strategy, Miami's next season would garner a 6-10 to 9-7 season. Fine, so be it. Then use the accumulated draft picks to make the trade to a team so desperate that we can move right up to the top spot of the draft and get Trevor Lawrence. By going this route, the "race car" will have been built and now we can get the driver. Much like Miami did with Marino, much like Green Bay had with Rodgers, much like New England had with Brady, much like Denver had with Elway. If we have a team that just needs a quarterback, we'll be much better off for years to come than a team that just has a quarterback and nothing around him.
Pick 1: Tua Tagovailoa, QB Pick 2: Jerry Jeudy, WR Pick 3: D'Andre Swift, RB / Travis Etienne, RB / Jonathan Taylor, RB Let's use this early draft capital to surround Tua with players he can develop with. Focus on the trenches and sprinkle in a few skill position players throughout the rest of the draft. Then, throw money at defensive guys who align with Flores' vision, and watch this team compete in 2020 with a young and dynamic offense and a savvy, experienced defense.
Chase Young made a strong case for that top pick yesterday. He could be a Von Miller/Khalil Mack type of defensive player
While I certainly see the allure of pairing Tua with Jeudy (and would never complain about going that route), I think that Simmons at S would have the bigger impact on our w/l record.
I think it would have a bigger immediate impact but I really would like a true #1 receiver on our team. A dominant Andre Johnson/Calvin Johnson type that can grab about anything.
I think Tua would be a mistake His back up looked just as good on that them. I would rather have a QB that makes the team look good then a Qb that the team makes look good. how many of the great Qb's came from national championship teams not as many as came from lesser teams.
I'm actually starting to warm up to picking burrows over tua. He has really stepped up this year and has a bit more size and arm strength than tua, plus tua's injury histort really worries me. Let's see how the rest of the year plays out but right now the needle is leaning in burrows favor.
Just no, you donr take a WR #1 in the draft, and juedy is certainly not that kind of prospect. WR is not a big impact position compared to QB, OL or DL.
I never said take a WR #1. I said a #1 receiver. None if the guys I listed were even #1 overall. Did you even read? He said he wanted a QB and a S, I was replying I wanted a QB and WR.
Fix OL in free agency with Jack Conklin and Brandon Scherff...Conklin played LT in college RT mostly for the Titans. Ideally he’s a RT but it’s conceivable I could use him at LT for a year as fixing this team is a multi year project Defense and running games are what travels in the playoffs. 1st 1st rounder: Young or Epenesa 2nd 1st rounder: Grant Delpit/Tristan Wirfs/Raekwon Davis 3rd 1st rounder: Fromm/Burrow/Herbert (whoever drops). Or take a shot with Dylan Moses, Javon Kinlaw, or Kristian Fulton Early 2nd rounder: Creed Humphrey/Tyler Biadisz Saints 2nd rounder: BPA (Someone always slides) or JK Dobbins
Sorry, misunderstood you. WR1 would be nice, but I think its the least of our concerns. QB, OL, Secondary, DL and EDGE rushers are all greater concerns.
I agree actually, I only personally would prioritize it draftbwise for a generational type talent which I'm not sure even exists in this draft. I will say though I feel better about attacking those positions via FA than WR though.
I was watching last night’s Ravens/Patriots game and I couldnt help but think, this is only going to boost Jalen Hurt’s stock.. I think we are going to see Jalen Hurts get picked in the Top 15 when all is said and done. I think as a passer he has a little more ability than Lamar Jackson, his mechanics sure look better than it did in Alabama as Lincoln Riley cleaned it up. And as a leader we already know what Jalen is.. if out draft ends up with 1. Chase Young / Derrick Brown / Tristan Wirfs 2. Jalen Hurts 3. Dylan Moses You have Jalen sit out the first year behind Fitzpatrick.. we got a good future right there..
I posed this question the other day.. Finnish this sentence.. If the ravens built an offense around the skillset of Lamar Jackson, should the same be done for Jalen hurts?
I think we already have some pieces in Preston Williams, Walton.. if we add another true receiving threat, preferrably one with speed or a combo of both, and some depth at running back.. maybe another tight end too.. then he should have enough.. to me Jalen Hurts leadership and talent has shown he will thrive in the NFL.. our offensive line has been playing quite well, theyre getting stronger every week and their execution on certain plays are getting better, and its built with a bunch of castoffs.. we got plenty of money to improve the skill level at several areas at offense but we also already have pieces to build with. in the end this staff has a patriot way.. even the patriots were once intrigued about drafting Lamar Jackson, they scouted him more than any team in the league and many thought the patriots were going to pick him. Jalen will fit this offense perfectly.
Jalen needs to play some real defenses first imo. Iowa State will be a good test to start. Baylor and TCU down the line and then hopefully if they can play against a team like Auburn, Iowa, Penn State or Wisconsin (or even make it to the playoff and face off against LSU, Bama or OSU) we will really see who he is. He's played well so far, but the Big 12 might as well be playing flag football at this point.
My first pick is either one of the three guys i mentioned (chase, derrick or tristan) whoever is available at the pick we are at. I dont think we will have the top pick but we will definitely be in the top 5. second pick is Jalen third first round pick is Dylan Moses.
Definitely no to tristan as our first pick. He has some slow feet, suceptible to speed rushers. Should be moved to guard, RT at best, definitely not LT material. If he is availabe with our 1C pick I would consider it. Not before. Aside fron Thomas I dont think there is any top ten OL talent in this draft.
I’d take him with 1B which is likely going to be in the 14+ range. I think he can play RT and dominate. Plus he’s a high character, team first guy that Flores covets.
After yesterday's game, I think we already have a few WR1's in Parker, Williams and dare I say Gisecki as well. I wouldn't be looking receiver at all except for depth in the late rounds.
None of those guys have shown anything close to being a #1 WR yet. Performing for a game against an equally terrible team doesnt mean they are more than what they are. Williams wont be in the league long unless he starts holding onto balls consistently and Parker has no consistency to speak of yet even from play to play.
Williams is a rookie who caught two nice contested TD passes yesterday plus several other grabs...if that's not WR1 material, I don't know what is. I agree somewhat on Parker but he's had a lot more catches the past few weeks as well...including that sick one-handed TD pass on the poorly thrown ball that was behind him.
It's nice he caught those contested balls but until he starts catching all the easy ones I'm not going to like him very much honestly. I want Parker to succeed actually. I praised him early on for getting open and making some plays I'd just like to see him do it every game.
If we end up picking #3 it will be a nightmare. Even if one if the two teams ahead of us doesnt need a QB, they will be taking offers from teams who want to jump us for Tua or Burrows, whoever is left. We would most likely still need to trade up to take a QB.
