Its called the Day That Never Comes. Sounds some what like One and or Fade to Black at parts. For all those Metallica fans on the board Check it out. I am buying the album in September because well, its metallica but also because Kirk Hammett is soloing again and he along with the Late Great SRV are my two Favorite guitar players of all time.

8 Minutes long huh? They're def headed back to their roots...

I'll always like their music but will never buy another album because of the Napster thing, crybabies. Song isn't bad bad though.

Pretty good, not great but I think it can grow on me. I like that they're at least attempting to return to their roots. The less St. Anger we get and the more Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets we get the better.

Wow...yet another "we're returning to our roots" promise broken. Way to go guys.

Man, this band has so outlived their usefulness. :pity:

Pretty good. Major improvement from the last.... 3 albums. I LOVED the latter half of the song when it speeds up. I am really looking forward to the rest of the album now.

I heard Cyanide the other day on XM and I couldn't believe how horrid the lyrics were. The guitar was okay but nothing great. Personally It doesn't sound like it is going to be a going back to the roots. Day that never comes is okay but nothing like their roots like they have been claiming.

Maybe they just need to relapse and start drinking heavily again lol.

Hammett actually did an instrumental with Carlos Santana a few years back, the song is called "Trinity". I thought that was pretty good.

The local rock station played it three consecutive times yesterday. For me it went for "curiosity" to "meh" to "this song is ****".

I do like the last 2:00 minutes. I'm not going to say "it's back to their roots" because that would be a fallacy. I will say that it is just a cool ending to a song.

The major issue and an issue that will never go away with this band is the fact that Lars Ulrich is the World's most overrated drummer. The guy is total garbage and is holding this band back now. He can't play fills and his cymbal work is awful. What is with the constant snare "fills"? Rick Rubin should have slapped him silly after he did the second one.

Why did they bring in Robert Trujillo? the guy is a TOP NOTCH bass player. Does anyone hear him? The guy is mixed out.

This is a band that used to tour endlessly, write relentlessly and take GREAT pride in their writing. Now they just do it for the sake of doing it in my opinion.

It all changed of course when Cliff was killed. sure, James and Cliff are the leaders of the band but Cliff was it's beating heart and it's soul. He would NEVER have allowed the band to end up where they are. I shutter to think what "...Justice" would have sounded like with him alive. It probably would have been an all time classic, ahead of "Puppets". Instead, that record was the beginning of Hetfield and Ulrich taking complete control and the band began to spiral downward from there.

They will never "get back to their roots" because they don't know what those "roots" are anymore. When you have sold a billion records, you sell out any building and you have a bank account that never ends there is no hunger. Their "roots" are unattainable. This is a band that wrote Puppets, The Thing that Should Not Be, Bells, Fade To Black, Welcome Home, Blackened, Eye Of the Beholder, No Remorse, Orion....the list is almost endless of songs written by this band that are timeless. Now they are, well, another band that is struggling to stay relevant...and not doing a good job of it.

Quoted for accuracy. You summed up exactly how I feel about them, I just couldn't put it so eloquently. I hate what has happened to them.

My best friend is a guitarist, and when we were roommates, I can't tell you how many times I would hear him limber up by playing "Seek and Destroy". They were his heroes-he won't even fart in their direction anymore. He will still play their music up to "Justice", but in his mind, they ceased to exist after that.

    It's damn sad, really.

now this isn't to say lars is the greatest drummer alive but he is in a real crappy situation ever since cliff died james has taken total control in metallica from the drum beat to the names of the songs..well bob rock had a little bit to say in things as well. but if you don't believe just take a look at the dvd rehersal from monster when lars tries to give a little input into how the drum beat should go james is like no..you play it the way i say or you don't play it. that type of thing is common for james and he is the one holding that band back..if i was lars i wouldve left james a long time ago.

excellent excellent post UT... ya know, some of those covers they did a few years ago were pretty bad *** though (Ecstasy of Gold and Turn the Page)... other than that, it's been downhill since Justice... I don't know if it's the copies I just got, but the mix/master is way f'd up on the new album... I hope it's not really like that on release date... it's aweful.

If that's true, it must be why their drumming sucks... It seems like every song he plays the same beat... I mean, c'mon, it doesn't take a great drummer to play what he plays... If you can keep tempo, then you could play drums for Metallica...

i agree. it can also be said of the bass play. jason wasn't the worst bassist in the world but james never really let him do his thing and give his input to a song..just play the notes given to you and thats it..oh and don't forget to smile..same with their new bassist(played with ozzy, suicidal tendancies so he might be used to it). the guy has alot of energy and jams on the bass but we will never see his true talents with metallica.

metallica became a business when cliff died and it's definately taken a toll on their sound.

Little irony in that considering AC/DC's new album name is the reported cause of the accident that killed him.

by the way, couldn't get through any of the songs - used to be a fan, not anymore.

the clip on their homepage sounds much deeper...I actually like that song and Im in the "Metallica now sucks" camp but that particular tune actually made me smile I can hear and feel the "old" metallica in that one.

You are right. Friend of mine sent me the mp3 version of My Apocalypse and it sounds significantly better than the ones on youtube. The drums are less overbearing and more on beat for some reason.

30 seconds from every track in the album.

I'm a bit apathetic towards this album. I actually have enjoyed most of the Metallica stuff, particularly the S&M album (with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra) and the Garage Days album with all of the cover songs. That said, they really burned me with their ridiculous Napster stuff a few years back (Napster, lol ...), and I haven't really be able to get into them. I liked the idea and concept behind St. Anger - a raw and stripped down Metallica album sounds great - but it didn't sound like it was mixed at all. I found myself adjusting my equalizer to try and drown out the awful drums. When I hear these new clips, that's what I'm hearing in most of the songs - a boring and too loud drum beat. Someone needs to mix Lars down a notch or two. I'll probably get this album because it's a new Metallica record, but I don't see it getting heavy play on my iPod.

I really like The Day That Never Comes quite a bit. The more I've listened to it the more it has grown on me. The other songs I could live without, but maybe they'll get better with repeat listening as well.

Eh, it's nothing like the other two. He doesnt even say unforgiven in the song...

It's good, I actually like it but it just isnt like the other two so it's a bit odd.

Starts off very slow with pianos and violins then picks up a bit. I think it's like Day that Never Comes, in that it'll grow on me.
