Oh, there are plenty of flavor of the month QBs I would rank behind Tannehill this year, including, Dak, Watson, Carr, Foles, Cousins, Ryan, Garoppolo, Wentz, Goff, etc. But, not Brees, Rodgers, Wilson, Mahomes, or Jackson.
I'm talking about yesterday's game as well. Yesterday's game was lost by 10 points for a reason, despite that a loss by 10 points is highly inconsistent with the way the two quarterbacks played in terms of traditional passing statistics.
He’s playing BETTER than Brees, Rodgers,Wilson, Mahoney and Jackson...and the granddaddy of them all, Brady
At some point we’re going to have to examine why so many combinations of offensive linemen, across two different teams, just can’t do the trick for Ryan Tannehill.
You could actually propose that Brees played better yesterday in fact, because Brees’s passing statistics may have been deflated by throwaways that would’ve otherwise been sacks, that Tannehill would’ve taken. Remember that a sack doesn’t contribute at all to passer rating, whereas throwing the ball away to avoid a sack diminishes a quarterback’s number of yards per attempt as well as his passer rating. And right now Ryan Tannehill is second in the league in sack percentage, behind only Dwayne Haskins, a rookie. So if Tannehill is taking sacks that should instead be throwaways, his number of yards per pass attempt and his passer rating are going to be higher than they would be otherwise, yet he is greatly diminishing his team’s ability to sustain scoring drives and compete, especially in high-scoring games. There’s a reason why Tennessee’s point differential is less than five per game in Tannehill’s starts this year, despite that he has played at a historically high level in terms of YPA and passer rating during that period, and it isn’t their pass defense.
Ive said it all year. Titans oline has been pretty bad all year. The fact that he is playing as good as he is, its really amazing
Look at Wilson yesterday without his top 2 RBs...against the Cardinals defense (31st in passing yards allowed, 28th in scoring) at home: 16/31, 169 yds, 5.5 ypa, 1 TD, 5 sacks losing 36 yards (Mr. Escape), 78.6 rating … 2 rushes for 2 yards How many trolls would be in this thread if Tanny threw up those stats? Edit: This is an example of why I refuse to take anybody serious with their, "he needs to elevate the team, put 'em on his back and will the win, no matter what, or he sucks!!!" Unless he's gonna play defense, STs, kick and punt, it's a BS argument.
IMO, I feel like Brees, Rodgers, and Brady aren't quite playing like themselves (especially Brady), and Tannehill is playing on par with Wilson, if not slightly better. Mahomes and Jackson though... just might be the best QB's in the league. FTR, it's a soft stance the former two points.
I suppose it is arguable but I would still rank Tannehill 6th, which is remarkable considering he flamed out so badly at the end of last season.
I would recommend we research the average win margins by those QBs when they play at the level Tannehill has, and their pass defenses surrender average passer ratings like Tennessee's has. I'll do that in a bit.
No we aren't. There is nothing to examine. He is playing at an elite level in the very first opportunity after escaping a dumpster fire.
He currently has the second-worst season sack percentage of his career, so in terms of that part of his game, he's either in roughly the same degree of a dumpster fire, or whatever he was in previously wasn't one.
I'm sure..... in isolation..... no reason not to look at # of explosive plays, points per game, redzone percentage, passer rating.... or we could debate sack percentage.......
One is a proven legit NFL MVP candidate, the other one is a backup QB who is playing a good stretch of football. Pretty easy to understand why fans are not really done on R Wilson in Seattle.
Watson was a legitimate top 5 mvp candidate the first half of the year he’s come back down to earth a bit of late. some of that old kryptonite is showing up of late.
But let's make the case that his situation in Tenn is no better than Miami, because.... sack percentage....
Well, to call him a backup is a bit disingenuous...he's a starter that was in a limbo status because of a crap organization/situation. And he's not playing good...he's playing lights out. I'm not saying fans should be done with Wilson...he's elite...his skills haven't dropped off or anything. Just pointing out that he's usually the beneficiary of a solid situation in Seattle (very good defense/run game), and when he's not (poor run game), he's human, just like any other QB. The Packers don't make the playoffs every year...nobody would ever claim Aaron Rodgers sucks...same with Brees. IMO, those are the only elite QBs right now, Wilson, Brees, Rodgers...and a few in the next level down (missing something, including consistency), Cousins, Tannehill, Stafford...with Maholmes/Jackson strongly trending toward it (if they keep it up next year, for sure).
a sack where he steps up for a one or two yard loss doesn’t bother me. Those are limit the chains exposure type plays. i will take those any day. Kinda like the other one he was flushed early yesterday and was sacked for like a half yard loss. Who cares. but when that clock is ticking and situationally you can’t take them or you are backed up in your own end and you hold the ball forever and then take a bad sack at like your own 2 yard line if not for a legit holding call on the defense that’s where I think the qb has to understand situational football more. but hey I see just about every qb at times take a sack they shouldn’t. Just I see it more with tannehill situationally id say. this is another thing that numbers in a vacuum stats won’t ever account for. Not all sacks are created equal.
He's still undeniably guilty of holding on to the football for way too long. Yes, the Titans O line has had its struggles, but I saw three sacks yesterday where Tannehill simply held onto the ball a second or two too long. Still, he's playing great for them, and I hope they find their way into the playoffs. Would be great to see them make a run with him leading them.
wilson can lay some stinkers. He just rarely lays them when the entire countries watching. Seems to rise to the occasion I guess the word would be lol
im not sure how anyone could ever debate this watching the tapes. It’s not even debatable even that damn titans defense does it’s job more then miamis ever has. Despite playing a db level that is ripe to get torched due to attrition
Like Brees yesterday for the near safety. I would like Tannehill to be quicker to get rid of it or take off at times. Then I'll see another QB sit in the pocket for 5 or 6 seconds before throwing the ball and I just shake my head..... I get especially ticked off when I see a team in max protect and still allow pressure from four...... 7 vs 4, the QB should have extra time and should be able to stand in and wait longer than normal.
It's not just guys doing their job better. It is also better schematically. Play action passing more often. Moving the pocket more often. Stretching the field more often. Even a well timed screen or two. How nice it is to see a well timed screen rather that 15 WR screens for a loss each game....
