I understand this. You know why? Cause we are the Lolphins. Bad decisions is what is the norm for us.

Look at it this way- how many AFC East QB's have won in Gillette in the Belichek years that weren't named Brady (or Jimmy G)? The franchise has to be sky-high on Fitzpatrick right now and I think it almost guarantees that he's the training camp starter regardless of who we draft (including Burrow if that somehow played out). And I think it has to do with more of what he's done off the field as much as his leadership in the final weeks....Fitz is a pro's pro and definitely someone you want mentoring your QB of the future.

So I don't see this as a sign Fitzpatrick is our long-term QB, I see it more as they've given him another tool he needs to make our next QB successful. And if he ends up starting another 10-20 games in that process, then so be it.

I love Fitzpartick for the same reason I loved Matt Moore...he works endlessly to improve plus players love the guy and play harder to make him successful. You take a guy like Fitz and we'd say he can't hold a candle to Dan Marino, yet when it comes to mentoring a young team with a selfless attitude, I'd take a Fitzpatrick or a Matt Moore over the great one any day of the week. And that's not a knock on Marino at all...they're just different types of leaders.

I get the concern about having to play Fitzpatrick next year and don't fault anyone wanting us to draft a QB so we can anoint him our next franchise QB. However, I look at Fitzpatrick as a guy who can buy us time. What I don't want to see us do is force a QB. I want us to get the right guy and if it means drafting a developmental type or drafting Tua and letting him heal a year then I am all for it.

Matt Moore was the guy that said he didn't even study the playbook when he was put into the Buffalo game? Or am I thinking of someone else

Billy Joe Hobert is who you're thinking of. Matt Moore was a pro and he even saved the season for the Chefs THIS year by stepping in for a few games while Mahomes was hurt.

I am a bit puzzled by this move but trying to see the positive, the Dolphins were 11-5 the 2 years he was OC for Miami.

Some of you have said his system is outdated. Maybe so, but seeing how I’m old school, this may be the shot in the arm Miami needs to be a hard nosed offensive team.

Just hope we don’t become the 2008 Kansas City Chiefs

There are literally 5-10 members of this site that would have a better chance of success at OC than Gailey does. I'm not even joking.

I think this is a smart move for two reasons: 1) it gives the Dolphins an OC who very likely won't be leaving for a HC position, and 2) it gives them an OC whose system is consistent with what's being played at the college level. Both of those things allow a newly drafted quarterback to have various kinds of consistency while developing at the NFL level that he wouldn't otherwise have.

We are heading in the right direction. As quickly as Flores hired Chan after firing O'Shea it's obvious the moves were planned in concert. You're going to lose your optimism because some dude named Alex thinks Flores made the worst hire in 10 yrs? You're thinking some dude knows better than Flores about who Flores wants as his OC?

Ridiculous. He turns 68 in a week? Big deal. Bill Belichick is 67. Pete Carroll is 68.

Yeah? Whether he succeeds or doesn't, it won't be due to his age. There are plenty of coaches in the league who're in their 60s.

Even if hes scheme is out of date he can come in and change the lockeroom culture. Hes really not a long term solution for Miami. This hire is similiar to the Mike Mularkey hire in Tennessee, although he was a dinosaur of an offensive minded HC he did alot of other good things with our team...

A handful, like 4-5. I'd be surprised if all of them don't retire as they hit 70 yrs old. Granted, a young OC could be gone in 2-3 yrs if the team has a lot of success and the young guys are given a shot at being a head coach.

That said, I can't get excited about Chan Gailey, as his years with the Dolphins were all about a great defense carrying the team to winning seasons. Running a more simplistic offense to help a rookie QB feel more at home seems odd to me, as Fitz can play through most of the 2020 season while the rookie has time to practice and learn a more complex offense.

If Fitz is going to retire, then this move makes more sense.

I think I said in another post that even though I was disappointed, I was hopeful and that my optimism was down a notch or two. Generally, I am a glass is half full, kind of dude. However, I am susceptible to over-reacting and expressing my views immediately before I get all the facts. I know others are more intelligent, thoughtful, and put a lot of work into their posts, but I view the message board like we are all friends sitting around a sports bar talking about the fins. I don't have an agenda. I throw things out there, we have a discussion, I learn, we learn, we move on and discuss more things. :-)

Hopefully you're not counting me in there because I'd have the punter throw no-look passes to the kicker all day! It's the highest percentage play in football this decade!

Edit- crap, we started a new decade two days ago....that's exactly why you shouldn't hire me!

Thats old school 20-teens football back when kickers were 2-way players. That’ll never work in the 2020’s modern era with all of this new fangled kicker specialization.

It's a minor point, but the offense was about the same both years -- probably a little better in 2001. The defense regressed, though. The team finished 11-5 both years.

Compared to 2000, in 2001 Fiedler was better and Lamar Smith was much much worse, presumably because Wannstedt had run him into the ground, as he proceeded to do with Ricky Williams. (I don't think you can pin Smith's overuse on Gailey, because he doesn't seem to have done that sort of thing elsewhere.)

Maybe there's no such thing as a Chan Gailey offense, because the conservative offense of the 2000-2001 Fins seems really different from a spread offense. Maybe he tailors his offense to his players? A man can hope.

Brian Flores decided he needed to make a change at offensive coordinator after his first season as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Flores elected to bring Chan Gailey in to run Miami’s offense as they look to catapult forward out of phase of bottoming out and accumulating draft assets in hopes of a brighter future.

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Flores said that the reason Gailey is the right person for the job is his ability to teach and a shared vision for how the offense should be structured.

At the end of the day, I feel like for the future of this team, my vision for us offensively, I feel like it’s a move we have to make,” Flores said.

“…From a vision standpoint, as far as how we’re going to run the football and throw the football. How we’re going to go about meetings and practices and walk throughs I felt like we needed to do something a little differently than we had in the past.”

Chad O’Shea was let go as offensive coordinator at the end of the season despite the team going 5-4 over the final nine weeks of the year after an 0-7 start. Gailey was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills and offensive coordinator of the New York Jets when Ryan Fitzpatrick was the starting quarterback for both teams. He’ll now get a third chance to lead an offense with Fitzpatrick as his starting quarterback unless the reins are handed to a rookie next season. A rookie draft pick will almost certainly be a part of the puzzle regardless and Gailey’s ability to teach that player is one of the benefits to the change.

“He’s worked with a lot of quarterbacks, he’s been a head coach,” Flores said. “He understands, let’s call it ‘coach-quarterback,’ that dynamic, that relationship, how important it is. He’s a very good teacher and he’s gotten the most out of every guy that’s been in that room. To me, that’s coaching.”

Yes, and there are many more good coaches currently in the league, who are in their 60s, and who will never be inducted into the HoF.
    Gregg Williams, Jets DC
    Joe Vitt, Jets LB coach
    Leslie Frazier, Bills DC
David Culley, Ravens Asst HC/WR coach/Passing game coordinator
    Joe D'Alessandris, Ravens OL coach
    Ivan Fears, Pats RB coach
    Bill Callahan, Browns OL coach
    Stump Mitchell, Browns RB coach
Romeo Crennel, Texans Asst HC (in his 70s)
Carl Smith, Texans QB coach (in his 70s)
    Terry Robiskie, Jags RB coach
    Jim Haslett, Titans LB coach
    Ed Donatell, Broncos DC
    Steve Spagnuolo, Chiefs DC
Rod Marinelli, Raiders DL coach (in his 70s)
George Stewart, Chargers Asst HC/STs DC
    Richard Smith, Chargers LB coach
Rip Scherer, Chargers, Senior Coaching Asst/TE
    Mike Nolan, Cowboys DC
    Burton Burns, Giants RB coach
    John Matsko, Skins OL coach
    Juan Castillo, Bears OL coach
Rick Dennison, Vikings Run Game Coordinator/OL coach
Dom Capers, Vikings Senior defensive assistant
    Bob Sutton, Falcons Senior assistant
    Dirk Koetter, Falcons OC
    Phil Snow, Panthers DC
    Clyde Christensen, Bucs QB coach
Tom Moore, Bucs Offensive Consultant (in his 80s)
Jerry Sullivan, Cards Offensive Asst (in his 70s)
    Mike Solari, Seahawks OL coach
Pat Ruel, Seahawks Asst OL coach

Then there are guys who just retired in their early 70s. Dante Scarnecchia, Wade Phillips, and Dean Pees.
There are also several head coaches in their 60s, like Pete Carroll, Vic Fangio, Bruce Arians, Andy Reid, and Mike Zimmer.
Folks can diss on the Chan Gailey hire if it makes them feel better, but his age shouldn't have anything to do with the dislike. IMO.

Holy crap! Stump Mitchell is in his 60's? I had his football card when I was like 7. Damn...
There are some great names on that list! Talk about a blast from the past, Jim Haslett! I always confused him with the actor William Fitchner, He was the Saints coach and I honestly thought he did a great job as a head coach. Dom Capers....That guy was old when I was in middle school! Bill Callahan has been around forever too. Anyway, that's a cool list. Ya'll remember Bruce Coslet? That Nick Nolte looking coach for the Jets? Wouldn't that be crazy if he was still coaching? Ya know...like Assistant Linebackers consultant or some ****? I don't know, that's just a random name that I would expect to see on that list.
