boone should have told Gardner to bunt and setup 2nd and 3rd.. then try to get a flyball. When youre up against Cole you need to get any run as you possibly can... they had the opportunity to really work up his pitch count and they blew it with some dumb first pitch swings..

Boone batting Gardner and Encarcion that high in the lineup is just overthinking. He must think they are due to light it up. They suck this series, have them bat 7,8,9. Didi should be batting where Gardner is batting

Didi just missed that home run by a foot or two though. Who knows how that game goes if the yanks are up a run late. I dont think boone has octavino and happ pitching.

Yanks had trouble with the slider tonight I thought. Agreed on the missed opportunities

Its bizarre how baseball can work sometimes. The Nats destroyed the Cards in the first inning. It wasn't just the pitching. St Louis's whole team was just an epic fail. But then they couldn't score a single run the rest of the game and almost blew it.

Best wishes to Joe Maddon in LA. He will always be an important part of Cubs history, and I'm glad that he gets to keep managing in a place where he had a history before.

When six of your players struck out twice a piece its almost impossible to get any rhythm.. i really thought this would be the yankees game.. they just havent been able to see the ball well.. now with their backs against the wall, theyll need Paxton to give them a solid 7 innings... and just try to make verlander work..

Its not impossible.. verlanders and cole’s stuff is nice but its not unbeatable and they need to stop treating it like it is

Once again encarnacion choked. Bases loaded and I think he struck out. Thank God Stanton is back and encarnacion is in the minors now. But you're right it's the whole team not just him

Game 6 3rd inning. Astros up by one
    .

For some reason just have a gut feeling Nationals will win this game. Series has the vibe around it of a seven game series

    2 notes:

    1. The Mets are freaking clueless letting Girardi slip away (to a division rival) and not interviewing Buck Showalter. This team needs an experienced leader who excels at bullpen management and that describes both those guys. But the Coupon ownership doesn’t believe in paying for a manager. It’s frustrating being a met fan knowing we are close and these idiots will spend 10m a year on Familia, 14m a year for Cano, and 27m this year on Cespedes but not 4-5m on a manager when I can immediately think of 7 games Callaway helped blow this year because of stupid decisions.

    2. Let’s go Astros. I hate division rivals in all sports and the Nats are no exception.

Of course I would post that about wanting the Astros to beat the Nats and within 10 minutes the Nats hit 2 solo shots and take a 3-2 lead. If the Nats win, I take sole responsibility. It’s crap that happens when you’re a mets fan

I have next to zero faith that David Ross is the right man to lead the Cubs the next two seasons as their window closes with this group of players. While I understand that today's managers have less influence than ones in the past, and that no one is going to be Sparky Anderson or Tony La Russa, I still think that hiring someone who's never even been a bench coach to lead a big market contending team is a big mistake. He may be great in the long term, but right now, I'm really worried.

The Cubs also have some serious legacy issues involving hitting with men in scoring position that have been there during the entire Theo era. I was hoping that someone from outside the origanization would be brought in to bring a different eye and approach to the team, and try to figure out why every single player on the roster sucks so badly in those moments.

Nats homer and take the lead 3-2 in the 7th. What a game, what a series! I read somewhere the ratings are down a lot for this series which is a shame. Baseball really lost the younger generations somehow which is sad because when baseball is good like these playoffs, baseball is great and should be appreciated by as many as possible

Congrats to the Nationals. I always like to see a team who hasn't won before, or hasn't in a while do so.

As far as the younger generations, I think the fact that the game is ending at midnight is part of that. When I got into baseball heavily in the late 80s, World Series games came on around 8pm and were over by 10:30 most of the time. Regular season games usually started at 6 or 7. Put games on when kids can't watch, and they don't watch.

Back in those days, MLB and the NFL were the two big dogs as far as professional spectator sports as well. The NBA was a distant third, and in most of the country, people just didn't watch the NHL. Then ESPN and sports TV in general exploded, people had a lot more choices, and their attentions were split. When that happens, you're less likely to become obsessed with any one thing.

And then today, man do kids have so many other choices and options in the world. A lot of them are barely aware that pro sports are even there. I guess we'll see what happens as time goes on.

What a stupid stupid stupid decision to pull Greinke at 80 pitches. And you make worse not going right to Cole there! They deserved to lose. That was a Mickey Callaway move all the way. He did that at least 3x (2x with Noah, once with Matz that immediately come to mind) this year and it blew up on him each time.

Bad news: Phillies signed Wheeler from the NYM

Great News: Billionaire Steve Cohen is in talks to buy 80% of the Mets over the next 5 years. #GetTheWilponsOutOfHere!

My jaw dropped when I read that Wheeler was getting a "9 figure contract" from someone. My first thought was that included the two decimal places for cents! Dude missed all of 2015, all of 2016, and was awful in 2017. I basically quit thinking about him and didn't realized that he'd turned it around the last two years.

He definitely got paid and still can be better then what he’s been. The 2nd half of 2018 (look at his splits) he was about as good as Degrom so he can sustain it for a while but that was the only time he’s pitched at that level for any length of time. He actually circled back to NYM and the White Sox supposedly offered more money. Can only hope that the transition to Cohen over the next 5 years brings more payroll and better decisions. Wheeler wanted to stay a met so badly that before the NYM acquired Cespedes they actually had a deal in place to move him to Milwaukee along with Wilmer Flores. Flores got the attention for crying but Wheeler also begged to stay (insert joke about being traded to Milwaukee). My guess is Wheelers era is about to go up in CBP as it’s a sandbox but Phillies needed rotation help and he will provide that.

I've gotten so sick of reading garbage Kris Bryant rumors that I've mostly just tuned out MLB for now, despite it being the Winter Meetings. Baseball writers across the country have apparently decided to suggest that one team's pile of spare parts, moderate to low end prospects, and overpriced mediocre veterans are an acceptable offer for Bryant to the Cubs. Its so stupid.

The Cubs might move him for the right, BIG return. But they aren't going to give him away, and the idea of them taking on a bad contract in return is just idiotic. Bryant is a 27-year old MVP, with many great years ahead of him. If he's going somewhere, then multiple high ceiling players with many years of team control are headed to Chicago.

The Yankees are really something else... It wasnt too long ago when Gerrit Cole was getting lit up as a pitcher for the Pirates.. Houston helped him become a better pitcher..

9 years 324 million for Cole is ludicrous and i get the feeling theyre going to regret that contract

The other question then is whether the Yankees are going to just say "to hell with it" and face the consequences of going so far over the luxury tax, or whether they'll now trade away other players to save money.

Speaking of Luxury Tax consequences, the guys at my favorite Cubs blog dig into it further than I've ever read before. There's a lot of angst among Cubs fans about the team essentially punting on making any improvements whatsoever for the 2020 season while they wait out some big contracts.

    https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs...ing-to-get-back-under-the-luxury-tax-in-2020/

But what Brett Taylor of Bleacher Nation explains, is that its much cheaper and easier for the Cubs - or any other big market club, to spend about 207m in 2020, and then 250m in 2021, than it would be to spend 209m in 2020 and 2011m in 2021, due to the consequences of being a three-time offender going over the tax. Basically, you can go way over once and get a slap on the wrist, but do it over and over and it becomes a really big deal.

MLB is really, really screwing the Cubs over by delaying the hearing about Kris Bryant, and whether he has one or two years of team control left. Their ability to maximize a return on a potential trade has been really damaged. Teams are apparently still offering scraps and spare parts.

Yeah they need to figure that out ASAP, ridiculous it is has gone on this long. I understand that it has some serious implication, especially if they come down on Bryant's side, but you can't leave an issue like this hanging. The Astros also need to be sorted, though less sympathy since it's about cheating.

As for the Cubs, the biggest issue is just a tightwad owner acting like he's about to be sent to the poor house. The whining these owners do man ...

Trades seem in odd place right now though, and I think the Dodgers are a big reason. They have oodles of talent and are constantly linked to top tier talent, but apparently refuse to include their top prospects. Like no, my dudes, you aren't Lindor and Clevinger for a handful of 5-10 ranked prospects and an MLB backup. Make a real move or piss off.

He’s had a pretty mediocre last 3 years. I attribute that a lot to Maddon who I always felt is horrible but injuries also played a part.

don’t get me wrong I’d take him, but if I had an elite prospect type I’d rather move it for Arenado instead of Bryant. I’d like the Mets to offer Matz + a prospect or two as long as said prospect is not Francisco Alvarez or Ronny Mauricio and Bryant can be resigned.

I'd rather let Bryant walk as a free agent than take a bad offer. It sets a bad precedent and teams think they can take advantage of you.

More than anything, I hate Boras. I'd really prefer the team to avoid his clients.

Agree Boras is great for his clients for as long as teams are willing to let him have his way but he’s such a pompous douche. At this point I don’t think any fan base likes him but he sells the dream quite well.

I don't see the Cubs taking a bad offer - they still do want to compete and win now. They would need at least 1 MLB ready player (pitcher most likely), a top prospect and maybe another high ranking prospect and a lotto ticket guy imo. The Rockies are apparently definitely willing to listen on Arenado. If he gets shipped it might help frame a deal for Bryant, though ofc Arenado is signed way longer albeit at a high rate.

It's insane the league has done the ENTIRE Astros investigation and punishment and this ruling is still pending.

The player I'm most surprised by the lack of HOF votes is Omar Vizquel. He was constantly referred to as a future HOFer during his playing days, but in three years on the ballot, he sits at 52.6%. Dude played 24 seasons in MLB, won nine straight gold golves, and eleven overall. I wonder if he perhaps stayed too long for some people? Had he hung it up when his time with Cleveland was over in 2002 (11 seasons) would he have had a better shot at getting in?

It's because he didn't play for the Yankees. If he had, he would be almost a unanimous selection.

No doubt. It's funny thinking what kind of legacy Jeter would have if he played his entire career in Oakland, Pittsburgh or even somewhere like Minnesota or Anaheim.

I’m more surprised Schilling is still not in to be honest. Best all time walk/k ratio. Had a long stretch where he was one of top 3 or 4 pitchers in the game along with Pedro and Unit in addition to his 3 WS rings. I never thought of Vizquel as a truly elite all around player. But I guess if Ozzie is in then Vizquel should probably be in eventually. Next few years are light on legit nominations.
