I don’t think us Tannehill fans believe that is likely, lol. They’re a #1 seed and for good reason. The Ravens are just a great coached team everywhere and in every situation.

That’s not an excuse for Tannehill. I sort of hope that they have to unleash him a bit.

I have faith in his ability to throw that damn ball. I don’t have much faith in the receivers ability (and offensive design as a whole) for quick strike scores, which I think they’ll need.

You weren't "wrong" per se, on Wilson. 32 teams agreed with you. He has exceeded his draft status BY FAR, and VERY few people pegged that.

My only quibble is, DJ, that your analysis is propped up by 7 years on a dysfunctional team. I think Tannehill's resume looks very very different if he was drafted by almost any other team, except for maybe the browns or Jets. We wouldn't still be having this discussion 7 years down the road.

I haven’t really watched the ravens defense enough to be honest with you. But id expect a lot of loaded boxes and one on one on the outside. I mean they had to see how the titans ran the ball last week. I’m just expecting the titans pass game to have to do more.

they need to get aj brown the ball but everyone knows that. Also #84 needs to show up more. He’s underused.

I think that tight end fitzer on iso can do some work. They aren’t gonna double him. So he’s gonna have to make some plays. Be nice if they got their 2 way go slot back humphries but I don’t know if that’s on the table this week.

That Ravens defense is for real McDuff. OC's gonna have to be on his stuff to find holes and mismatches. But like you, I think if they can partially neutralize that secondary, Tannehill will hit the throws. He has hit a TON of tight-window throws this year...insanely accurate on them to be exact.

I mean I know the way teams played them and it was scared to death of lynch and the run game downhill and knowing that even 14 points vs that hawks d was gonna be game over. I mean they gave up like 6.5 ppg for an extended run there. That’s just silly. And they ran for 200 yard clips.

but I do think that I didn’t account for his “it factor” enough. That much I can say.

Firkser, and their other 2 TEs, seem to have meshed well with Tannehill. They've all had some nice plays.

yeah firkser runs pretty decent routes and if you can get him isoed on a safety which they should be able to do situationally cause they won’t help vs him much he can separate a little out of cuts. But then again teams have seen tanny look to him on 3rd down so maybe he does see a little situational extra attention. He runs his routes well vs leverage pre to post snap

I don’t get it, their receivers are very talented, and have been part of a regular season onslaught of offense..especially with that run game asserting itself at the most important time..

Tannehill should be able to capitalize on the extra defenders that will have to come up..

That’s the beauty of a great run game..it’s push and pull..

Well I’m pretty damn sure the ball will go where the coverage says it should witb tanny. It pretty much always does.

but yes they gonna need an elevated level of play and execution from tannehill in this one. I have no doubts.

I believe many Titans fans would disagree that they have a very good Oline, especially when it comes to pass blocking.

It’s a known fact that QBs need to navigate the pocket. But I personally believe you put too much emphasis on a QB with superior athleticism. They don’t win SBs. In fact Tom Brady wins SBs, Peyton Manning wins SBs, Drew Brees wins SBs. And those QBs win with very good Olines.

    Edit: Forgot Eli......poor Eli, lol.

I don’t know (especially after watching the Pats erase the Titans receivers) that the young group the Titans have will win 1 on 1 matchups if they are able to stuff Henry.

If they do, I have no doubt Tannehill will hit them often and for big yardage.

that pats corner level is very underrated. All 3 of those guys both boundary’s and the slot were plus grade in 2019. The safeties aren’t too shabby either. But both of those guys went out or were out for an extended part of the game which is why I personally think the pats kept their safeties 2 deep or at depth despite all the run at them. Imo somewhat trying to hide the safety level in the pass game

Ya, just watch that OL against good defenses...great in run blocking, meh in pass protect. The Ravens will CERTAINLY cause havoc in the pocket in this one. With and without blitzing.

I imagine humphries will probably get the aj brown assignment. And that dude is a stud. He can match physically in tbe stem or the top of the route with brown which isn’t easy to do so tanny better be careful going to that well. He’s an enforcer in the run game also.

the other boundary #22 hasn’t played up to his contract but he’s really gifted just gets lazy at times imo. that’s the guy I’d try to go after with #84 but he has to step up and show up. Battle of underwhelming high end talents.

I have argued stats to say Tannehill’s performance should improve with better coaching. Also made the argument that Tannehill had performed well for long periods in situations where his coaching didn’t suck. For example:

    https://www.thephins.com/threads/the-effect-gase-has-had-on-tannehill.91046/
    https://www.thephins.com/threads/comparing-tannehill-to-luck.88973/

    https://www.thephins.com/threads/why-tannehill-should-be-a-better-qb-now-lazor-is-gone.88754/

There are plenty of posts on those threads saying that they have reviewed the tape and that the tape proves that Tannehill sucks,

The Ravens were the best team in the NFL for most of the season and had the best record in the NFL to showcase it. They also finished (thanks in part to Miami) at #1 in scoring offense and #3 on defense.

The Ravens two losses were to the Browns and Chiefs with strong ground games from Nick Chubb and LeSean McCoy as well as good QB play in those games.

The Titan's beat both the Browns and Chiefs this season, making this matchup more interesting.

If all goes well, the Titans have a legit shot at the upset. They've over-achieved quite a bit. I hate the Ravens, so hopefully they can do to them what they did to the Pats.

The one caveat I'd throw on that, is that Ravens defense, from about week 7, has been BY FAR the best defense in the league. They lost those games before then.

dang I didn’t know that. I knew the offense was out of control.

Teams walk into buzz saws all tbe time on the road in the postseason especially when someone’s got an extra weeks rest. Kinda surprised no one did in the wildcard weekend even.

I totally understand ryans variables while he was a dolphin, poor variables bring out the best or worst in a qb, both ways are very visible to see..

You see not only do I agree and said many times that Ryans skillset was not used properly by his coaches, (read option game which he reads the end very well, Bootleg action from both sides, lethal dexterity and accuracy on the run} but Ryan himself never took initiative to do something about it..

i think this video is a perfect example of why arm strength is so important as a QB trait. Half those throws are interceptions with an average arm. A lot of people downplay it nowadays but after intelligence and accuracy I think its the third most important trait a QB can have

I think that arm strength is part of a matrix that includes
    - decision making speed
    - trigger speed
    - arm strength
    - accuracy, specifically is the ball delivered in the right window that allows the receiver the best chance to catch the ball vis-a-vis the defenders, not just whether it is a catchable ball. The further the ball is from the optimum position the longer it will take for the receiver to secure the ball.

The total amount of time from when the QB’s eyes see the situation to when the ball hits the receiver’s hands. The shorter this total time is the less time defenders have to react.

You see Josh Allen get away with a large number of questionable passes because of his arm strength. You saw in Peyton Manning’s last season that even one of the best brains in football struggled with a noodle arm.

if you used the same standards that you use for tannehill then you would label wilson a scrub. he hasnt won a super bowl since that one year with an alltime great defense and running game. Fin D could have won a Super Bowl playing QB on that team. Now that he has to play for normal teams like Tannehill he is a complete bum who cant get through the playoffs to save his life. Every year its pad the stats during regular season poor defenses then enter p[layoffs and get eliminated by good defenses.

Tell you what. If Wilson actually wins a super bowl with a normal team like other elite QBs then we can call him elite. until then he's just a qb who cost the seahawls a second ring

If you are in either of these groups...

A.) Would've discredited Ryan for having a great day statisticaly because he got the loss, then discredit his getting the win while having bad night statistcally??

    Or.....

B.) Would've gave him credit for a great day statistically while blaming the loss on the Titans Def/WR/OL/RB's, then give him credit as "leading his team to a playoff win" despite bad numbers??

YOU are the reason this thread and so many before it on RT have become laughable. Because your mind is never changing and you just like to argue for the sake of arguing.

You know, you mind me of this guy I knew when I was in Iraq back in 97/08 I believe it was. His game was basketball and he had a massive Viagra induced erection for Kobe Bryant, always spouting off these incredible numbers that Bryant put up during a game and yet...the Lakers would lose said particular game.

You're looking for Tannehill to be Kobe Bryant, regardless whether or not the Titans actually WIN the game. Against the Patriots, the TITANS had a tried and trued game plan against the Patriots and because that game plan was executed to near perfection, you still doubt Tannehill.

Listening to you, you make it sound as if the Titans (and Tannehill by proxy) lost that game and Tom Brady and the Patriots won.

Again, the statistic is technically right.

I dont think its being applied fairly due to the conditions and circumstances already mentioned, but he is 100% correct about the number of times that QB rating wins.

The thing not being discussed is that when that QB rating wins, I'd be willing to bet the other QB rating against them was similar and that a good portion of the time there is an outside explanation of why both QB perform so badly.

Especially in the playoffs where we know generally the QB can play at a higher level than the league average QB.

Honestly it doesnt matter if the game was bad or good. Unless you feel that is the peak of his play, and its not, it seems irrelevant how good/bad the game was.

This is an extremely silly statement. Even a great quarterback needs other parts of the team around him to be successful. Just ask Brady who's only reliable receiver this year was Edleman. No Gronkowski, no Brown, none of the other corps of receivers he's had in the past.

Successful quarterbacks who throw the ball and put up staggering numbers have great receivers around them. it's NEVER "just the quarterback". Even quarterbacks need other parts of a team to be successful

Your last paragraph is basically exactly my opinion too.

I do think there is a base level of play based on talent, but is it shocking the best year Brady had was tossing it to Moss?
