Ya good thing Rodgers is elite and on another level, so he could carry his team today.

Green Bay lost to an outstanding TEAM today...so did Tennessee. KC's defense kicked it up a notch, Tennessee's didn't. There's the difference.

This is why I brought up earlier the Billy Turner whiff that resulted in that defender getting a strip sack on Rodgers. It was exactly what I watched happen to Tannehill for years.

The 9ers just threw the ball 7 total times and no passes for over an hour and a half of real time.

defense and run game doesn’t win playoff games? Lol

Lol... as pathetic as it is, there's guys who joined just today so they can FINALLY gloat over Tannehill being out of the playoffs. Other's have had to wait over three months to gloat, and others since the Titan's last loss a month ago before Christmas.

If they aren't harping on #35 giving up the three biggest defensive gaffs on the day for the Titans, the OL fails, or the WR not getting separation or dropping balls, then just ignore them. Tannehill played well enough to win. The rest of the team did not. It is what it is.

Too bad Wake wasn't healthy enough to play. Would've been nice to have seen him in the playoffs.

that has to be something else right? Something pre snap. Otherwise...although I tbink they ended up calling it on the right tackle for a cut block on the back side.

That was a tough game today and it irked me the refs didn't call PI consistently. The gave the Chiefs that bomb on 3rd down as PI because the defender didn't completely turn around to see the ball, but on the very next drive on a 3rd and 9 with RT whipping the pass 10 yards...exact same circumstance and no flag. That one ref call sealed the game and that's not how an AFC Championship should be decided.

Tannehill played well but our biggest fear came true- they fell behind, Henry was all but benched due to scheme and Tennessee doesn't have the receivers or the pass rush to play from behind. And despite what others may think/say, Tannehill clearly deserves the comeback player of the year award....he had an awesome season!

It was a fun ride folks...let's do it again next year with one of our favorite teams!

Basically you have a handful of ppl SOOO emotionally invested in Ryan Tannehill that it becomes a thread of defending him at ANY cost.

Even if it means giving him the credit when he throws for 180 yards in TWO playoff games, claims he “led” them to those 2 wins despite Henry running at an all time historic pace and a defense that shut down the leagues best offense...

Then when Henry is neutralized and Ryan is forced to throw but comes up short....it becomes the RB/OL/ DEF fault.

    It is hypocrisy 101.

Personally I think it’s a tad creepy so many ppl are that married to their defense of a QB on a message board. But that’s me.

This is where you’re inaccurate Fin-O. I’m one of those Tannehill supporters and have defended his play. Hell, I made the prediction Tannehill was going to be named Comeback Player if the Year in early November, but I am one of those that have credited the entire TEAM and not JUST Tannehill. Football is a TEAM sport and anyone who knows anything about football knows this despite their own personal biases.

The Chiefs were SUPPOSED to win yesterday’s game! They were the number 2 seed; they had the bye; they were playing at Arrowhead and because the Chiefs did what they were SUPPOSED to do, TANNEHILL sucks?

The Chiefs’ defense were able to shut down Henry. Kudos
The Chiefs defense was able to make the game one dimensional. Kudos
The Chiefs offensive exploited the weaknesses of the Titans defense. Kudos
Mahomes himself made some incredible plays...with his legs. Kudos

You know what the ironic thing about this discussion is. Had the Chiefs list yesterday, the topic of conversation would be that Andy Reid sucked and is a choke artist, always able to get to the conference championship but not the Super Bowl.

Tgat would have been a stupid statement just like saying that Tannehill sucks

It's not really possible to say Tannehill should have played better without looking at each snap and seeing what he could have done differently.

Only one QB can win each game, if the argument is that it's up to the QB alone to elevate his team, there is actually only one QB in the league worth anything considering the top talent should have an advantage on everyone always.

I read an article that explained that the flag at the snap was for an illegal formation but the ref got it wrong. They picked up the flag but didn't announce it. The other call was for holding.

No it's not that he "sucks." It's that he needs the same caliber of surrounding cast to win a Super Bowl that any average-level QB does in today's NFL. And again it's not easy to assemble and maintain that caliber of surroundings under the salary cap when a QB makes an average-level or greater salary.

Here is Derrick Henry discussing whether the team can stay together -- let alone acquire the greater talent it needs -- not 24 hours after yesterday's game:

I don't think Tannehill could have played significantly better.

It was a high-volume game for him, meaning that his offense featured a greater than league average percentage of pass dropbacks. In such games with the Dolphins his adjusted (to 2019) average passer rating was 78.4. He had just 5 games of his 35 (14%) of that nature with the Dolphins where he played in the neighborhood he did yesterday in terms of adjusted passer rating. He had only one game in his career of that nature that involved an adjusted passer rating (124.04) higher than Mahomes's was yesterday (120.4). Keep in mind that these passer ratings are being adjusted upward, not downward, to fall in line with 2019 figures.

Prior to yesterday, in 2019 with Tennessee he had three games of that nature and produced passer ratings of 78.1, 82.3, and 109.8 in those games. Yesterday's passer rating was 108.1.

You basically saw Tannehill's performance ceiling in such a game. This is why he needs a top pass defense, to diminish the performance of the opposing QB, so that if and when you get his ceiling in such a game, his team stands a better chance of winning it against the Mahomeses of the league.

Certainly if he plays a more characteristic game for him under those conditions (i.e., a high-volume game with a much lower passer rating), his team stands almost no chance of winning, even with a pass defense that diminishes the opposing QB's performance.

This is why winning a Super Bowl with a QB of this nature is a tough bet. He needs to play as well as he can in a playoff game like yesterday's, and he needs the kind of talent around him whose acquisition and sustaintability his own salary prohibits.

I thought that PI call was questionable as well. In regular season I would shrug it off, but this whole post season has been about the refs letting them play and not throwing the flag unless it was obvious. I also thought there was some pretty obvious holds on the edges for some of Mahomes runs.

I gotta a disagree here. I think most of us wanted to talk about Tannehill, cause we still like Tannehill. Thats what this thread was about. I don't think there was anything wrong with that. People jumped in and started to make claims to the contrary of what was actually being seen week after week. And all of the debate was directed at THOSE people.

Let me ask your honest opinion. Do you think that what Tannehill did this year was that of an average QB that is just being hidden by superior surrounding talent?

Do you think that Titans were clearly the better team yesterday and it was Tannehill's fault they lost?

None of the people that are pro Tannehill in this thread are saying he was the better QB over Mahomes. We are fighting the perception that he is average and was exposed this game.

Titans just had an amazing run. They had to dethrone the reigning champs in NE, they had to beat the #1 team according to most analysts in Baltimore, and finally they were asked to take out the most explosive team in Kansas City. 3 Away games against 3 of the best teams in the league. I wish they could have gotten it done, but it was a tall order. Tannehill is a part of each loss, just like he is part of each win.

But you have to admit the Tannehill we saw this year was not AVERAGE.

    Overall, no, he wasn't.

But what we've been talking about in part here is what he needs around him to win a Super Bowl. And if that's one of the best pass defenses in the league, that can diminish the performance of the league's best QBs so he can keep pace with them in the kind of game he's likely to play in the playoffs (like yesterday's), then in effect he's no different from an average QB, because they all need the same thing to win a Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes and players like him don't need a top pass defense to keep pace with opposing QBs. Ryan Tannehill does, however, and again that makes him no different from an average QB in that regard.

And again the question becomes whether you can assemble and sustain that kind of talent when a QB is beyond his rookie contract and is absorbing such a large percentage of the salary cap. The past 15 Super Bowls say it's highly unlikely.

Basically I agree with all of this.

He was great. He came in and played the position at a high level. The Titans would NOT have made the AFCC game without him. The only point I made which to me is obvious and factual is that Ryan showed he can be a huge part of the reason you win in the right circumstances..but he isn't THAT guy who can lift a team with disadvantages to victory.

And naturally many are taking that as a HUGE slight to Tannehill. Like how dare I have THAT opinion of him!! It is the triggered extremists that ruin these threads and have been for years.

    Basically the question is this:

Do you come out of yesterday's game thinking 1) "we need to get somebody like Tannehill and surround him with more talent so we can win a Super Bowl." Remember that Tannehill is beyond his rookie contract, and so his salary is going to prohibit to some degree the acquisition and sustainability of such surrounding talent.

Or do you come out of it thinking 2) "we need to get somebody like Mahomes."

If you came out of it thinking #2, then the Dolphins made a wise decision to part with Tannehill. Let Tannehill and his future salary cap hit interfere with the Titans' ability to win a Super Bowl, while we move on to targeting an elite QB in the draft.

Personally, if I'm the Titans I see a window that is open and a formula that is close.

Find a couple pass rushers and you MUST find another WR to help open that offense up. Corey Davis shouldn't be a starter in this league, Humphries isn't even a true slot guy, he is a situational slot guy. AJ will keep getting better, he has tremendous potential but he can't do it alone.

So yes, I'd find a way to keep Henry first and foremost and Tannehill as well. If I were rebuilding and had consistent instability on my team? Then yes, I'd part ways with RT much like the Dolphins did.

RT, for the Titans, isn't much different than the QB we saw in Miami. He still has a poor feel for the pocket, he's a little slow to read certain coverages, and he holds the ball too long.

However, his arm is incredible. He's accurate and can really spin the football. His PA game is second to none. However, he is not the QB you want if you need someone to carry the team. And that's not a slight, because very few QB's can carry a team. A team can win with RT if they play to his strengths, give him a running game and a decent defense.

He had a running game and a decent defense this year. The defense was league average. He needs a top pass defense to compete with the Mahomeses of the league, especially in a playoff game with high passing volume.

So now he needs a running game and a top pass defense, while he himself stands to absorb upwards of 15% of his team's salary cap. That won't be easy to assemble or sustain.

Derrick Henry's cap hit is going to vault into the stratosphere in comparison to this year's, for example, and at some point you're going to have to pay AJ Brown and Jonnu Smith as well. Taylor Lewan and Rodger Saffold's cap hits increase substantially next year as well.

This is why it's so difficult to win a Super Bowl with (in effect) an average QB who's beyond his rookie contract.

Its not black and white. The better the QB the less supporting cast you need to make a run. Tannehill is a really good QB, so he requires a good defense an average O-line, and a good supporting cast in WR/RB. All of this is doable in the NFL, and even at a sustainable level.

Either you are an elite QB, or you are thrown on the Average pile? That's got to be the sloppiest analysis I have ever seen.

If he takes less then an elite QB salary then his team can build around him with the extra money. If he signs for 26 million a year for the next 4 years, his team will not be hamstrung by his signing, and they will compete every year, barring major injuries.

Your best bet of making the superbowl is to win your division AND get the bye. The path to the Superbowl has too many variables that can take out THE BEST TEAMS. You want a real shot, take out one of the weeks you have to play. Tannehill didn't get that opportunity, cause he inherited a train wreck of a season.

You know whats even more unlikely then winning a super bowl with an average QB? Winning the super bowl as the 6th seed.

It'll be tough, because they have to improve the pass defense by either getting lucky with several cheap defensive linemen and/or defensive backs in the draft, or paying free agents at those positions tons of money. If it's the latter, then it'll be difficult if not impossible to keep the offense together under the salary cap, much less add to the offense with another very good receiver.

The above sort of juggling act, year to year, is why it's so difficult to win with an average QB. The stars have to align.

No, most Super Bowl teams don't have top pass defenses. Lots of them have great quarterbacks and just average pass defenses, and their great quarterbacks are able to outduel the other good quarterbacks in the league without needing a great pass defense of their own to suppress their performance and be able to keep pace.
