In light of the foggy conditions, pilot should have landed at Burbank and had them take a vehicle to the practice (which was about 30 minutes away by vehicle). The helicopter was due to land at Camarillo airport which is about 15 minutes passed Mamba Sports by vehicle. So the decision to fly the chopper instead of drive from Burbank saves them roughly 15 to 30 minutes. Terribly tragic. Was it ultimately the pilot's decision to fly on rather than Kobe's? Well, we'll probably never know. Bottom line is that this accident was avoidable using common sense and now a living legend is no more.

I think you can take sexual assault very seriously without assuming every accusation is true.

I don’t know the truth, you don’t know the truth. Only 2 people in the world do. We can come to conclusions based on evidence and not based on accusation and find middle ground.

The evidence pretty clearly shows his accuser as mentally unstable and a liar. The facts show that there wasn't even a trial. Just an accusation. I know you know this...

Not trying to come off topic here, but LeBron will never surpass Jordan as the greatest no matter what he does.

LeBron stint will always be vs Mavericks in 2011 where he choked the whole Finals terribly. Jordan has never had a bad finals. This is how close this two are.

LeBrons my favorite player but theres no way his better than Jordan. FCA

Guys, an NBA legend and 8 others lost their life yesterday, including several children. In the spirit of the original post, could we not make this about the tragedy this was? It's pretty lousy some would see this as an opportunity to talk trash and argue...if anything, it should point out that life is too darn short for that type of nonsense.

Seriously, go kiss your spouse or significant other. Hug your kids and maybe play a game with them. Life is too short to hold grudges and get all wrapped up in drama.

So if I've offended any of you in the past, I sincerely apologize...let's move past it and enjoy each other's company while we're here (ironically, arguing about our beloved Dolphins). But even more important, let's encourage each other to get off internet forums more often and do the stuff that REALLY MATTERS in life, loving those close to us and creating awesome memories to cement our own legacies.

That's the true moral of this tragedy...stop taking time for granted and make the most out of today.

As disturbing and weird it might sound, I really wanna hear the "black-box" its a device thats installed in all of the copters. Will be able to see how it went down, it records the voices and reactions of the people inside.

At about 4:18 mark on this video - the altidude reading is 014-015 then starts to spike around 0214, they flew right into the side of a mountain beacause the pilot was being a big shot and not a pilot... he was flying visually and was in fog and low cloud conditions, his reaction to try and gain altidude was because he could see they were about to hit the mountain side but it was to late. Unfortunately the investigation isnt over, but to me and having talked to my friend wich is a pilot, it seem as if the action of one pilot cost himself the life and several other people life on this copter. He should of have turned back or found a place to land instead of being a rockstar.

I caught a video earlier from an eye witness who was at a supermarket about 1/4 mile away...he was the 1st to call 911. The guy must have had an aviation background because he was using technical terms and said that he knew the copter was too low by the sound as it passed overhead. He couldn't see it in the clouds/fog though and saw no disturbance in clouds from the rotors, and he was wondering why they were flying at all in such lousy weather (later, he also said that a friend a few miles north said the skies were completely clear...so it was just that immediate area).

He also said that his viewpoint of the crash was blocked (due to some trees across the street), but he heard the copter drop below the cloud level and sort of anticipated a crash or emergency landing scenario. So not only did they go straight into the mountain, but he believes they were descending to gain better visuals right before impact. Here's the thing though, the guy was speculating that Kobe was the pilot and mentioned that he's flown for years...although he never said "why" he believed that he'd have control over the actual pilot on board.

I can't find the link but it was an tall, thinner guy being interviewed, probably mid 50's, grayish hair. It was about a 4-5 minute interview. I THOUGHT it was on the LA Times website but now I'm not seeing it....I'll post the link if I can find it.

I don’t think I’ve ever really been as shaken by a celebrity death as I was with this one. Was really weird getting the yahoo notification considering I was just on his Twitter that morning. Always been a heat fan but still had the Kobe shoes and would smash with Kobe in nba jam.

I was just there as well. Driving through the hills on the way to the mountains...you couldn’t have paid me to get in a helicopter. Super sketchy flying conditions.

There is no black box. This was confirmed during yesterday's NTSB press conference.

at the time of impact, the chopper was descending at a rate of approx 60 feet per second. It was also doing approx 180mph. This after the pilot attempted to climb to get out of the fog. The conclusion from that can be that the pilot had no sense of up or down after attempting to climb out of the fog. He had no sense of a horizon visually. And he wasn't looking at his instruments at that decisive moment. The chopper was also descending to the left at the time of impact. So it would seem rather than flying horizontally into the hills, he flew vertically down into them.

The question that i have is why no co pilot? That many people on a flight and one medical issue with the pilot and you're in big trouble. Should have been a co pilot. Then you have a pilot doing the visual flight and a second looking at the instruments. Sounds simple enough for one pilot to handle, but it's not when seconds matter.

I believe his helicopter was able to carry 9 or 10 people and that includes the pilot. Depending on the seating configuration, one of the passengers may have been sitting in the co-pilot seat.

"More recently, Bryant told former baseball star Alex Rodriguez in a 2018 interview he came to rely on helicopters once the Southern California traffic began keeping him away from his family.
"I had to figure out a way where I could still train and focus on the craft but still not compromise family time," Bryant said. "That's when I looked into helicopters and to be able to get down and back in 15 minutes and that's when it started. So my routine was always the same: weights early in the morning, kids to school, fly down, practice like crazy, do my extra work, media -- everything I needed to do -- fly back, get back in carpool line, pick the kids up."
His wife once told him she could pick up the kids from school, he said, but Bryant insisted on doing it. Bryant had three children at the time; his fourth daughter was born last year.
"'No, no, no, I want to do that,'" Bryant said he told her, "because you have road trips and times when you don't see your kids, so every chance I get to see them and spend time with them, even if it's 20 minutes in the car, I want that."

You would assume that they have more technology when it comes to bad weather such as fog as where they are as pilots, how high or low they are....

When he asked for special VFR that meant he was foregoing instruments and visually flying. That's one of the reasons he was so low I'm assuming.

There’s an interview out with a guy who was Kobe’s pilot on the same copter from 15-17. He swore a co pilot wouldn’t have made a difference. I personally would never get on anything without a co pilot or captain.

I just dont get it. When the pilot seen all that fog in the clouds why didnt he just stay there and wait until the fog is gone. Not sure why he took such a gamble.

Unless, you take Kobe at his word. Or, the specific facts as agreed to by all parties, (the chokehold, no asking for consent until the end when she said no etc..)

"I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman. No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case. Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter."

Pretty clear that she was raped. It's how consent works. The question is whether Kobe knew at the time. I hope not. I don't think he did. The attacks on her, and her character are abhorrent and evil.

He was pacifying a woman with mental issues. If you read the police reports, and both of their statements, it's clear that he didn't finish and stopped when she told him that he couldn't perform something he asked for (I won't go into details here, but it's in those reports). So, bascially they were two consenting adults agreeing to whatever was taking place, and once she made it clear that she wasn't going to do something he asked, they stopped. He then masturbated into a t-shirt after she left the room.

People fail to mention the bigger issue in that incident. Its the fact that Kobe cheated on his wife - wich is a huge moral stance, but people do make mistakes. If she was able to forgive him, I dont why others cant.

A 6 foot 6 pro athlete grabbed a nineteen year old girl from behind around the neck hard enough to leave bruising, stripped her, had rough sex hard enough get her non-menstral blood on his shirt, all while keeping the chokehold, because that's what he was into. Just not with his wife. He stopped when he spun her around and asked, the only time he asked for any sort of consent, to do something and she said no. He thought he had consent because she kissed him before turning around. This is his story.

Yeah, but she's so crazy. That's why he had to lie about it. That's what you believe? Kobe was so concerned about her mental state that he just lied and said that she honestly thought he had raped her to protect her. What a swell guy.

But then she lied to investigators right? So did Kobe. She lied about why she was late for work, kept the same lie she told her boss, but recanted and admitted she over slept instead of having car troubles. Kobe denied have sex with her at all until he found out about the rape kit. Those are pretty much of equal relevance to the case though, right?

Are you really struggling with why people exchange opinions on a message board? Or, are you trying to make a point about posting on message boards by posting on a message board?

Easy there, strawman. I’m specifically wondering what your reason is for discussing the rape case almost 20 years later after the guy was just killed with his young daughter, not why we post on message boards in general.

Because people care about rape. It's considered very bad. It still happens. My experience is that most of us know someone it happened to. This seems like a fairly obvious thing.

**edit: You also might want to investigate what a straw man is. I specifically asked if I was understanding your argument. I made no argument against an invented argument.
