Minkah Fitzpatrick‘s production soared after being traded from the Dolphins to the Steelers last season and one of the reasons cited for that change was the way that he was used in the Pittsburgh defense.

After moving around the secondary throughout his time in Miami, Fitzpatrick was being used solely as a free safety by the Steelers and he turned in five interceptions in his first seven games with the team. That seemed to suit him well as Fitzpatrick was vocal about his dislike for his role in Miami.

Fitzpatrick’s impact was less pronounced over the back half of his time in Pittsburgh and he thinks part of the reason was that quarterbacks were able to avoid him because they knew where he’d be on the field. As a result, he’d like to reincorporate some of the movement that was taken off the table last year.

“I don’t want to see that drop-off,” Fitzpatrick said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “You know what I’m saying? I wanted to continue to have that impact on my team and have that impact on games. Because it’s no fun when you’re in a critical moment and you can’t do nothing about it. When you move around and you’re a moving piece on the chessboard, it’s hard to defend and you can’t just say, ‘All right, the quarterback is going to look at me and say he’s going to be in this spot every snap,’ like I was last year. It’s going to be harder and it’s going to be more difficult to take me out of the game.”

While the shift in view may lead to some head scratching in Miami, anything the Steelers can do to help Fitzpatrick make an impact on games would be welcomed during the 2020 season.

Minkah should win the Antonio Brown "Tool" of the Year Award.

lol im glad hes not our problem, i dont think hes that much better than the guys we signed off the street last season... hes solid but nothing has showed up that says hes a guy we are going to regret not keeping..

The first half of last season, he had a couple balls that bounced his way by pure luck..

He might be the sixth best player on that defense... ill take heyward, bush tj watt, dupree over him and i think steven nelson might be better...

I'm going to be 100% honest.

I just dont think he liked being here. I dont think it really has anything to do with his role. I think he used it as an excuse to push his way out after reading this.

I would tend to agree with this, but he was complaining about his usage before we started tanking.

This is what frequently happens when you take a stupid kid who has talent on loan from God, make him an instant multimillionaire at 22 then try to have a “grown up” try and tell him what he needs to do or not do.

Fitzpatrick was pretty much being employed in Miami the same way he was at Alabama...but sadly he was on a team with a Captain Kangaroo at the helm of this ship rather than a Bull Haulsey...and losing sucked.

Trade him to a team with a legitimate coach who tries to teach him HOW to play at the NFL level, has instant success upon first arriving, is having a great time but once opposing quarterbacks avoid him because he is THAT good, he whines that no one wants to play with him.

Fitzpatrick has the young raw potential to go down in NFL history as one of the greatest safeties of all time...if he would just STFU, grow up and listen to that perineal you successful defensive coaching staff in Pittsburgh.

As stated I’m glad we’re not dealing with that drama any longer. Good call Flores!!!

They did their job without whining about it, which meant that the defense was better at the end of the year than the start. As had been said, he got a few lucky breaks early when the Steelers D was playing well and the QB's were staying away from the celebrated names but he did play well. Once QB's stayed away from him, he didn't like it - how soon will his mum be on twitter again about it?

Outside of misspelling the admiral's name, [Halsey] this is the best line I have seen in a long time. Unfortunately, it is also very much too accurate!! Laughed so hard I had to send out a search party for my glasses....
