A lot of rumors going around that Burrow might not want to go to Cincy.

Would you be willing to trade #5, #18, #56 and a 4th next year to be able to draft Burrow or whoever you’d take #1?

It's tough because I dont think any of these QB are close to a sure thing and have serious question marks.

Honestly I'd consider it but I'd be almost more comfortable staying at #5 overall. I dont think there is any talent drop off between Burrow, Tua and Herbert honestly. If anything Herbert may be the most "gifted".

To truly decide I would need time alone with each QB.

No way, no how. In a year where there is a really special player there, like Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning, then I would seriously consider it. But not this year. I wouldn't trade our lower second rounder to move up. I frankly want to trade down from 5 if possible.

I think I've reached the point where I'm against any trade this year that involves us giving up the number 18 pick.

    Yes.

Look, if your QB can be gotten you go and get him. I understand that the Dolphins have holes, all teams have holes, I understand that we have 3 1st round picks. Most teams do not have that. So, what that does is enable the Dolphins to do whatever they want in the draft. The Dolphins didn't acquire all of these picks with the intentions of making picks with all of them.

Trading the 3 first rounders for a QB that you consider elite is a small price to pay. Is Burrow that QB? I personally don't think so, but if the Dolphins do and they DON'T do everything within their power to get him, then they've failed.

I think that giving up that kind of haul would cripple the franchise. Trading four or five starters not only for one QB, but one who's already 24 years old and has only started for one season. All time huge risk.

What 4 or 5 starters are you referring to? If the Dolphins had not acquired 3 1st round picks would that have crippled the franchise?

Don't look at the picks as individuals...it's quality, not quantity that wins the draft. Yes, you have a better chance of getting that quality the more chances you have, but if YOUR QB is there, and you have the means to get him, you go and get him. Period.

I just got home from Mardi Gras last night- we took a 5 day cruise out of New Orleans and 90% of the ship was LSU/Saints fans. And since there's nothing to do on a cruise except eat and socialize, we talked Joe Burrow a whole heck of a lot. The funny thing was though, anyone who was a true student of the game was quick to point out the obvious- Burrow has exactly one year of college film. He processes the field well, throws accurate passes and looks solid evading the rush....but he was also surrounded by incredible talent. A good portion of his TD's were 50/50 balls that his big receivers would come down with 90% of the time....rarely did Borrow have to pick apart the field and sustain long drives.

Most on the cruise thought he was special but even his biggest fans kept going back to that one year of film on an all-star team...and I'm honestly a lot more of a skeptic than I was three months ago. I think Burrow would shine in Miami with Parker and Williams but in Cinci? I'm not so sure he takes them to another level. I would personally pass on moving up since shoring up the trenches has to be priority #1. But if the Fins believe they can do that thru free agency and some later round picks, then I wouldn't hate moving up...I just don't want to see them bet the farm on a talented kid with one year of experience in a powerhouse program.

I don't think Burrow is going to be an elite QB. Of course I could be 100% wrong. However, if the Dolphins think he will be, then they better do everything within their power to get him. Same goes for any QB they feel strongly about.

We look at it differently. Even if the guy picked at number one is a guaranteed "10", I'd rather have five players who are "7s & 8s" than the one. The Fins need a lot. Put one young guy into there, without help, and its going to end badly. I want quantity, plain and simple. I want more draft picks. Volume.

Well, we’ve got one QB with all the measureables but accuracy and film issues, one with injury issues and maybe a height concern and another with only one year of film. At the end of the day, it will come down to conviction on that guy being your fancies QB or you stay put or trade down.

I’ve liked Burrow the most even before Tua got injured. I agree that it would be tough to give up that #18 because there’s gonna be a lot of talent there. Or you trade 26 and have to add in a 3rd rounder.

As a realist, I don't think that there is any chance that the Bengals trade this pick. Quarterbacks are at such a premium that I really think you should always take the best QB in the draft, if he is available when you are on the clock. The Bengals desperately need a QB, so that pretty much removes need from the equation.

That being said, there is a 100% chance that I would call Cincy up and see what the price is to move up to one. The way I see it, there is no harm in asking, and I would be interested in moving all the way up.

I think it also depends on position.

Give me a 10 QB over a bunch of 7 other positions. I can get them later, they arent rare as unicorns.

That said, if it's a 10 Tight End, while tempting, I'd take a bunch of 6's and 7's over him.

It's a no from me. The main reason is, as has been mentioned earlier, Burrow's solitary year of perfoming at that level. While he may turn out to be one of the greatest ever, he also might be a bust. There's just too much uncertainty for me. I would take Tua over him every day of the week.

I would be ok with trading to 3 or 4 if it was necessary to land Tua but I wouldn't want to gamble the farm on it.

If the trade makes sense, sure. But The Bengals have absolutely zero to put their pick for a price that's down the earth. Right now, they're in a win-win situation - either they get their prospect (likely Burrow), or they get a king's ransom.

Dont set the expectations too high next season, we arent making the playoffs again. All this coaching turnover after a successful rebuilding season and half the roster isnt going to look the same.

We went 5-11 with one of the worst rosters in the league. We're going to do better than 5-11 next season. Playoffs or not, we know exactly how much of a swing in draft positions a couple wins can make. We are not going to be able to trade for the first overall pick next year without laying out a LOT in return. This is the year we have the best shot at it, like it or not.

We should have improved talent and, frankly, improved coaching. Regressing would be a huge disappointment and a negative mark. It is unlikely we are worse next year, though also unlikely we are significantly better.

Also, Lawrence is a true generational guy - nobody is giving him up. So you would need to hope that we are either significantly worse ourselves, and/or that the team picking first overall has no need for a QB. Not a combo I would risk. It's one of those things that sounds alright, but really isn't a feasible plan to build on.

    Slightly left of center
I would rather we took three different QBs with all those picks. Say Burrow and Tua are gone even I would rather they choose

    5-Herbert
    18-Eason
    56-Hurts

than trade those picks for Burrow. And I would be seriously happy if they did just that for reals.

One will be the future, one will be the future somewhere else, the third???

    LOL. Really?

Some lucky buggers going 0-16 will get Lawrence and no amount of picks will be enough to get them to relinquish him.

Unless you fancy us going 0-16?

I think this is a bit of a fallacy to think that because we went 5-11 with low talent we will do better next year.

The only win that was even slightly shocking was NE and MAYBE the Eagles. I would say our early season performance was much more surprisingly bad than our late season was surprisingly good.

The other 3 were not games we had any sort of huge disadvantage in and weren't very shocking wins IMO.

Well, passing on a QB you believe can be elite for another QB you believe can be elite is playing with fire. Pass on Tua, for example, even though you think he can be elite with the hopes of getting Lawrence sounds good on paper.

Until Lawrence suffers a carer ending injury, or totally regresses and looks horrible, or he refuses to play for Miami, or he quits football...etc..etc.

A bird in the hand and all that stuff.

If your QB is available NOW, you get him NOW.

No, it's just knowing the NFL and seeing how things go from year to year. We're going to win more than 5 games next season. We probably won't make the playoffs, though stranger things have happened, but we're going to win more than 5 games.

I honestly believe we will win between 3 and 6 games. I do not blindly trust this staff, I see things I like and things I do not. Like I said, none of our games were shocking that we won. We did nothing innovative and our biggest accomplishment was getting everyone to buy into a system.

    1) The system itself has not proven to be successful. Most of us predicted around 5 wins if Fitz started. We ended up with that exact number. I do not believe we exceeded any expectations, I believe our expectations just sank incredibly low after the Ravens game.

    2) Even if the system is successful, it is easier to get 53 guys fighting for their career to buy in and go 110% than talented guys who arent fighting for their career in the same sense. We need to find a happy medium between talent and hard work when acquiring players. Some guys have both of course.

    3) We may start a rookie QB at some point even if our system and staff are the best.

I'm with you. And for another thing, the schedule looks to be a lot harder next year. Plus, we got really, really lucky with timing on a few of the wins last season. The team easily could have ended up with two wins instead of five.

The reason why we have a bonanza of draft picks that could allow us to trade up to number 1 overall.

    We traded away
    - an All-pro FS on his rookie contract
    - A pro-bowl left tackle on his rookie contract
    - A pro-bowl (alternate) QB who lead the league in passer rating.
    - a RB who averaged 5.1 yard per attempt and 80 yards/game (1,000 yard rusher in a full season)
    - a number 2/3 deep threat WR who averaged 10.2 yards per target.
    - a DE who had 11.5 sacks and 2 FF
and replaced them with a bunch of undrafted rookies and street free agents.
Of the players traded away you could only argue that Preston Williams adequately replaced Kenny Stills. All of the other players traded away have not been replaced by NFL starting caliber players.

There are too many holes to fill all over the roster. We went through the pain of 2019 for the purpose of rebuilding and restocking the entire roster. There’s very little point in drafting a good QB and surrounding him with trash. Maybe it’s worth it if you get a QB who transcends the game like Mahomes or Wilson, but there’s no guarantee that Burrow is that type of QB. And if there was there’s no way Cinci would trade him.

I completely agree- we jettisoned 4 potential Pro Bowlers, threw away fan favorites like Wake and Denny then lucked into replacing Stills with Williams. We are currently the least talented team in the league and even with a great free agency, we have to hit on almost every single pick this season to actually be competitive in 2020.

My biggest problem with this tear-down process was that our 8-8 teams (on average) were not good enough to build from, so that 5-win season we just had was necessary. Fine. But if we only win 5 or 6 next season and maybe 7 to 9 in 2022, it's really hard to say that we didn't throw away a heck of a lot of talent for nothing. That's why I was furious at the beginning of this season and why I'll have the exact same standards next year.

In short, a perennial playoff contender needs a lot of pieces to fall into place and these draft picks can't be used like casino chips to move all-in. We have to pick smart or we're screwed for quite some time...
