I want a receiver in the first round...

No Not Ruggs or Jeudy or Lamb

I want Denzel Mims... with the 26th pick.

The more I watch his film the more scouting reports I read... He is the one...

This is a fantastic breakdown showing his advanced hand placement and footwork... Mind you this is a guy who is 6 foot 3... has 4.3 speed and the longest arms in the draft. ( Catch Radius is insane. )

This guy is the next Deandre Hopkins.

    5. Tua
    18. McKinney
    26. Mims

Get an OT at #18 and I could live with that, but getting Mims in the second seems better value, so you can grab the best RB at #26.

I do not see the Packers passing on Mims at 30.... He is the perfect player for them... He will produce right away and they have a top QB on a team that has to win now... And they desperately need another top receiver to pair with Adams. He is perfect for the Packers at 30....

So if they like Mims and want Mims... They will have to take him with the 26th pick in my opinion to get him... I do not believe he will be there when we pick in the second round.

A perimeter WR is the last thing we need. We need someone who can actually play in the slot. There is no reason to go after a perimeter player right now IMO it's a waste of resources.

Perimeter or deep receivers can play the slot for the most part... Not every slot receiver is capable of stretching the field...

Brown, Hopkins, Landry all line up and are lethal in the slot.

Parker has played the slot some for Miami with success. If we draft Mims he can play the slot... He runs slant routes to perfection... There are even examples of him showing advanced hand and footwork on a slant route inside... Perfect for playing out of the slot.

I'd go Jeudy at 18 should he fall, but not snagging an OT in round 1 is questionable. You'd need to dedicate 2 of the next 3 picks to getting two guys imo. Swap McKinney for Josh Jones and aim for Winfield or Davis in round 2.

Overall, while WR isn't necessarily what we consider a need, I don't think it would be a bad idea to add a high level playmaker. We can dump Wilson, and protect ourselves against further injury/regression to Williams and Parker. While both of the latter showed great promise (especially Parker), neither are established or have shown consistency across multiple seasons.

I am all for cutting Gator and Wilson... Frees up almost 10 million in cap space. Draft Mims 26th overall and then hope someone like Duvarney is there at the end of the third round and trade back into the third to snag him... Boom you are set at receiver for the next 2-3 years.

Drafting 2 WR with 4th or higher rou d pi KS is gonna be a hard sell, especially if dumping other assets to do so.

The question becomes, who are you willing to forgo to get them? What position should we ignore? RB? Interior OL? DL depth?

I dont believe you use a first rounder on a guy out of the slot either though. Even if he was able to play the position, I'd still find it to be a misuse of resources when you have two starting quality WR and numerous other holes.

It's basically a luxury pick IMO and we are not in that scenario. If we want a WR, grab someone in the 4th round.

Anything else would be a horrible mistake and I'd fire my GM immediately if he took a WR in the first with our roster. Anything short of Jerry Rice/Randy Moss would be a failure.

Also, Hopkins isnt a great WR and I wouldnt want him or a guy like him. Hes an above average WR and product of volume passing.

Drafting Mims allows the Dolphins to trim 10 million of replaceable dead weight in Wilson and Gator... I think that needs to be factored into the equation at some point also. Parker in the past has lined up out of the slot and he did very well. Point is Flores likes versatility and If we Drafted a burner like Mims who had plus size, plus hands, and plus ball control we could have multiple receivers lining up all over the field creating problems for opposing defenses. I do not think it has to be a situation where we are only taking a slot receiver and wasting a pick because there are other needs.

With that size/speed, that's like a Randy Moss prototype. If you could get Randy Moss, you take him. Now, I'm not saying he's gonna be Randy Moss, but if he does end up that way? We'll wish we grabbed him. A Randy Moss singlehandedly changes your offense.

    Resnor,

Did you watch the video I posted... breaking down his advanced use of footwork and hand placement? How advanced his route tree is?

I mean the guy doing the video may be related to him or something... LOL But I want this kid on the Miami Dolphins.

    He is the total package

I'm not against dropping Grant, but I'd hold on to Wilson. Hes actually one reason I consider it a definite luxury pick for us. We dont need to drop salary this year, we are okay with the cap keeping one or both guys.

Also liked your post, not because I agree but it's good to see well thought out posts.

FWIW I'm not saying he wont be a really good WR. Just that I dont think that is a position of need, and we can find someone who can benefit from having two, what I believe will be #1 quality WR, playing on the perimeter.

I'd rather focus on our line, the safety position, pass rush, so on. Maybe next year if Wilson cant show up.

I'd like to win this year, but I'm not at the point where I want to make luxury picks.

Alex, let's say, hypothetically, this guy is able to perform at close to a Moss level (I know he's a little shorter). Would you say having Randy Moss is a luxury for a team? I mean, if you have an all time great, dominant receiver, that's not a luxury. That is a cornerstone of an offense, or so it seems to me.

Well I said in my post before I think, unless he is Jerry Rice/Moss level.

In that case sure I'd go for it, but is he on that level? The odds are he isnt. Not because he isnt very talented, but those to me are the top 2 WR in NFL history.

In the end I'm fine with anyone we draft. I'd be upset with Love for a QB...but I'd swallow it. Anyone else, I'm 100% fine. I just don't find WR to be a pressing need.

    I would too.

I still see this as a year we can use to evaluate talent. We made some nice signing, but I'd like to see another year where we give some guys a chance to fill in positions.

We had some guys step up at WR near the end of the year, Wilson should be healthy, if we want to give Grant another shot he is there.

My gameplan from here would be testing what I see as talent I may already have and drafting for the positions that have less talent. Basically create a list of weak positions and draft BPA within them unless someone falls.

Forget about Moss for a second.

What about Adams, Thomas, Hopkins level... as in a top 5 NFL wide receiver?

He does not have to be just as good as Moss who maybe was the most physically gifted receiver of all time.

What if the Dolphins had a receiver that was even more talented physically than Williams or Parker... Imagine Parker being the #2 and Williams being the #3

Think about the difficulty matching up against the Dolphins when our smallest receiver is 6 foot 3 and they all can run, box out, and go get the football.

Nobody is disputing the fact we have plenty of needs... I am talking about getting incredible value for the pick mims dropping to the end of the first round is a bargain. I am arguing that he is just as talented as Ruggs, Lamb, Higgins, and Jeudy Lamb and Ruggs will likely be taken top 15!

I just did one of those silly mock simulators, 4 rounds.

    #5 - Justin Herbert QB
    #18 - Andrew Thomas LT
    #26 - Xavier McKinney S
    #39 Yetur Gross-Matos DE
    #56 Tyler Biadaz C
    #70 Isaiah Wilson RT
#124 (Trade Up) AJ Dillon HB

Just no, reciever is the least of our needs especially not in the first round. We have much bigger needs at OT, QB, S, RB

There is only one ball though. All three players wont be putting up numbers relative to their talent and in the future, pay.

IMO There is a reason teams dont build that way. It's because every WR has certain routes they excel at. It's not as simple as just being a physical beast.

It definitely creates matchup issues, but you're not getting any bang for your buck.

Also I wouldnt touch Lamb. Hes a bust waiting to happen so no doubt Mims is better than him at least.

It's like having Tomlinson and drafting Peterson so you can run two back sets. Would it work? Probably. Is it the best way to build the team? Probably not.

If Mims is a player that can play at a level that is on par with Thomas, Adams, Hopkins... He will be one of the very best players in the Entire NFL To get that with the 26th pick... There is no arguing against it. Yes we have other needs... But if you have the chance to get that level of a player at any position you take them. Saying that Receiver is not our biggest need is not a valid argument. Not really.

Now if you are advocating that there is a Tackle that will be as good as or better than Wilfs... Who is a steal and can be had at the 26th spot.... I am listening. Part of this is not just the aspect of drafting a wide receiver... I know the draft is deep with wide receivers and we have other needs.

I created this thread because the more I read about Mims and the more I watch film... The more he looks like he is a game changing player. Like a Hopkins or Thomas. My argument is that if you have a chance to get a player like that you take them.

There will be three wide receivers taken before Mims and I think he will have the best NFL career out of them all.

I just dont agree with that. I dont believe in BPA. I believe in drafting BPA by need positions.

The impact another WR, regardless how good, would have on this team is minimal.

Again, if I had Tomlinson I'd never draft Adrian Peterson even at #26. You could use them on the field to create mismatches, but the bang for your buck doesnt equal the talent you gained. It's the same at any position.

It isnt about having the best players stacked at one position. A game changing WR wouldnt change games for us, because it's not why we struggle to begin with.

    I don’t think it’s a lock the guy goes in the 1st

Mims is fast — there's proof of that in his film from 2017, 2018 and the 2020 Combine. So why didn't I see him separate with his speed in 2019? Was he hurt? There were too many plays where a defender stayed right on his hip. That's part of the reason why he had 20 contested catches, the second-most in college football last year. But Mims had just a 48.8% contested catch rate, only slightly above average according to Pro Football Focus. PFF also noted Mims' low yards after catch per reception average (2.8 yards, tied for 308th among college receivers with 50-plus targets), suggesting he didn't often break away from coverage when he did make catches like he used to. Can Mims bring that acceleration back so he can get consistent targets game after game?

Also, Mims had seven dropped passes in 2019, and 12 in 2018. Sometimes he'd make jaw-dropping circus catches and sometimes he'd drop easy slant passes. Could this habit cost him the chance at serious playing time?

Any concerns about being hurt and losing speed were addressed at the combine when he killed it and dazzled with his speed.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but I have a question: If we do take Tua, what would be the best way to help his transition into the NFL? Gailey is basically starting from scratch with our offense, isn't he? Is Alabama's offense a pro-caliber offense? If so, should we go with that system and let the rest of the offensive players learn that system (most likely they will have to learn some new terminology anyway)? It would give Tua a leg up because he already knows what to do and he could help the other guys. Also, it might shorten his learning curve so that he can really focus on deciphering the NFL defense and how best to attack it. Just a thought...

    Well

Gailey likes the spread if I remember... Gailey likes to run the ball half of the time... I would have to look that up...

But if we draft a Big back like Dillon in the third or fourth... And Mims with the 26th pick... As long as we go get Prince Wanogho and then a center like Cushenberry in the second so we can start rebuilding the line... I do not think there will be any limitations on what Gailey will be able to do. Three massive wideouts that can run and go get the football will help Tua a lot.

We inked one of the best guards in the league... and Karras is an upgrade at center... So already the Line is going to be much better. I think we all agree that the Dolphins will bring in at least one more important piece for the O line.

That being said... Even if we draft Tua... I think Fitzmagic is the starter at the start of the season. I do not think there is any scenario where Tua is the starter in September.

Tua will have time to transition learning from the sidelines with all of the work through the week and the practices... He will have time to get acclimated. He will get his shot at some point in the 2020 season... If he earns it. I really believe that if we draft Tua he will have to outwork, and then outshine Rosen. Nothing will be handed to him.

    Surfs up...

I really think that Miami could easily land Mims, Duvarney, and Dillon if they want to...

I am all for drafting both Mims and Duvarney because it allows us to Cut Gator and Wilson and free up 10 million in cap space.

Duvarney is a kid that will be there in round 3.... He is 5 foot 11 and runs the 40 in 4.39... He is a polished route runner with strong hands.... He was a swiss army knife for Texas and did a little bit of everything... He is able to play the slot, run the wheel and even line up outside...

My opinion only and not looking to start any negative discussions.....he is a bust IMHO...ankle weights....cant get off the line, speed is all straight line, easily mirrored, long strider., easy to defend either man where you crowd him off the line and trail or zone where he can be crowded and is slow off the top of his routes.......catches everything, high points the ball, and has the radius of half a block but can't get separation, slow off the line, and does not play 6-3..........would hate this pick before 80-100 or so.......again just my opinion and I get others may think different....

Honestly, dude, that is the way I think it should be. This isn't a courtroom.

After reading your thoughts I went back and read up on Mims more. He's definitely a project and I get what you mean about taking him too high. If a team does take him in round 1, it is one of those picks that is based on his potential. No doubt he's an athletic freak and I think he did pretty good at the Senior Bowl to boot. If we do take him, I would be concerned about his drops. Nothing frustrates me more than having a guy drop an easy catch. That is why I really loved Ford's game this year, especially our 2nd game against the Patsies. His nickname should be Maytag he's was so dependable. I think we do a good job developing our WR, so I believe in time he could really shine if he took to our coaching. He has untapped potential and didn't do as well as they thought he should so there could be something going on in his personal life holding him back. <---Just a guess

And I did not think he played slow off the line or showed only straight-line speed. The film showed him running precise routes changing speeds and direction with fantastic footwork and body control to get inside or outside of the defensive back to get open.

I have seen some mocks on NFL.com where we take either Tua or Burrow at #5. That takes care of QB, but how about our LT? We definitely need one of those, and one that can start right away, no less. How should we address that issue? Will we have to trade up from #18 to get one of the top studs?
