Looks like that was from October 29th. Tannehill had only started two games. It would be interesting to see where things ended up.
I wouldn't take the Heisman Trophy to mean anything in this regard. Danny Wuerffel won the Heisman and floundered all over the league for six years, at a time when the league revolved less around passing. College success doesn't always translate to NFL success. To me there is compelling evidence on both sides. Tannehill certainly played very well in 2019. The game film and the statistics attest to that. There are also factors that suggest he may have been experiencing a situational advantage, however. At any rate, I believe it'll take another season to definitively determine what's happening with him. I don't think there's anybody here who, if given the opportunity to view another season of Tannehill's play before making a bet on his level of individual ability, would decline another season of information in that regard and make that bet now.
Tannehill had a situational advantage, so did Mariota, Mahomes, Wilson, Cousins, Garoppolo, Brees, Jackson, Prescott, Josh Allen, Brissett, Watson, etc, etc, etc. Stop pretending that Tannehill is the only QB that was in a good situation. All of the successful QBs were.
Well and see, that's where we apparently diverge. Certainly there is an interaction between QBs' individual ability and their surroundings, such that the QBs with more individual ability need less of a situational advantage generated by their surroundings, and the QBs with less individual ability need more of one. We can't assume that because a QB simply played well, he must've been the beneficiary of good surroundings. His individual ability could've overcome below-average surroundings. If every QB's performance is nothing more than a function of his surroundings, then there is no variation in QBs' individual ability -- they all have the same individual ability, and variation in their performance is therefore attributable exclusively to their surroundings. Does anyone really believe that? Patrick Mahomes has no greater individual ability than Josh Rosen, for example, and their performances in 2019 were attributable exclusively to their surroundings? If Josh Rosen played for the Chiefs in 2019, he would've played just as well as Mahomes, and if Mahomes played for the Dolphins in 2019, he would've played just as poorly as Rosen? You have to believe that if the above were true, quarterbacks would be sought after as nothing more than undrafted free agents, while teams allocated their far more precious resources to acquiring QBs' surroundings.
Who assumed anything? Nobody believes that. Not sure what you are talking about. I listed Mariota for Christs' sake. I listed the QBs of the other teams from the top nine rushing teams (along with the Titans) in 2019 (Mariota, Wilson, Cousins, Garoppolo, Jackson, Prescott, Josh Allen, Brissett, Watson). To that I added two QBs with stacked receiving corps, good OLs, and great coaching staffs (Mahomes and Brees). All of those QBs have favorable circumstances. What they do with the favorable circumstances is up to them. Some did great (Brees, Mahomes, Jackson, Tannehill, and Wilson), some did very well (Cousins, Watson, Garoppolo, Prescott) and some not so well (Allen, Brissett).
Tua might not start in 2020 (which I'm fine with), and you should know by now there are some posters who are deeply interested in how Tannehill does in 2020 and beyond no matter what the Dolphins or Tua do. So good luck with the close the thread (or at least topic) suggestion lol. Anyway, I'm really happy we got Tua. Best QB prospect this franchise has had since Marino. Now if he and Flores can just deliver.. our close to half century SB drought might finally be over (will be depressing to see that hit the 50 year mark).
Andy Dalton released: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29116803/bengals-releasing-andy-dalton-drafting-joe-burrow
That's what we thought in 2012, and why Tannehill got a benefit of the doubt usually afforded only to deities and supreme rulers.
On the one hand this is good for Dalton, because he could probably get a shot to at least compete to start somewhere in a journeyman type role going forward unless he lights it up somewhere. On the other, if I'm the Bengals I'd have liked to keep him around a year.
What forums were you on? The people who don't like Tannehill today are the same ones who didn't like him when drafted.
Yea, during his time in Miami he never played bad enough to make the people who like him dislike him. He also never played good enough for people who didn't like him to like him.
But after last season, those that dislike him have had to resort to more and more twisted and illogical arguments.
That's not really true- I disliked him more often than not, but that arm talent, toughness and resilience eventually won me over. He has some clear faults in the pocket but my gosh, the kid is tough as nails and once he got his accuracy dialed in, he was a lot of fun to watch! I think the moment he 100% won me over was in that comeback loss to New England where Parker dropped the game-tying TD as the clock expired...that's the closest we've seen to a 2nd coming of Marino in the past 25+ years. He proved beyond a reason of doubt that day that he was a Pro Bowl talent and it stinks we didn't have the pieces to see "that QB" every week. I'll still argue that we should have benched him for a year or two in favor of Moore, just to let him adjust to NFL speed and learning when to scramble without taking 10,000 extra hits. But other than that I have no regrets with him as the starter and I'll always be a big fan.
I agree it's time to move this thread to the "Other NFL Forum" Tannehill is no longer relevant to the Miami Dolphins. New coach, new "franchise" QB, new power structure in the FO. The mistakes we made or didn't make as it pertains to Tannehill no longer matter. There is nobody left to hold accountable and we are moving on to greener pastures. One thing I do hope is that there a Tua thread that lasts through 2035.
No. Absolutely NOT! Not joined. It just keeps happening on the sidewalk out front of my favorite restaurant. It's ****ing disgusting and I wish someone would come move this garbage out of my neighborhood and into the OTHER NFL THREAD where it has belonged since it's inception.
Tagovailoa hasn't saved anything as of yet. Until he plays and the Dolphins win, this thread will be a constant reminder of what we had and what we let go. If TT does pan out to be all that many believe he is, THEN this thread will lose significance and be laid to rest.
And if Tannehill flops next year in Tennessee will you continue to deify him? As for the constant reminder, just get a poster of Ryan in a Titans uniform if you need to remind yourself of all the Super Bowls Miami would have won if they brought him and his .500 record back. Oh, what could have been!! As for most fans of this team, he's already been forgotten, so this is more about you than the "reminder" you speak of. As for Tua, he will likely be significantly better than Ryan in a number of areas- Pocket presence, field anticipation, football IQ... Ryan still has the better arm but supposedly (and I don't see it) Tua's arm is relatively close. Ryan was the picture of health most of his career before the cheap shot.. Tua's health is the one and only question about him.
His health isnt the only question about Tua. Maybe the only question you have, but there are multiple areas of his game that dont translate well to the NFL level IMO or that get over glorified.
Haha I agree! Also not saying Tua will be bad. He wasnt my choice but I'm over it and want him to succeed. There are just some things I want to see, like if he can fit a ball into NFL passing windows, especially under pressure. I'd also like to see him really work on his arm strength. It's not a deal breaker and maybe the easiest to improve but currently I'm not sure all routes are open for him to throw consistently as it stands. Honestly a lot of my issues with Tua also go towards Burrow. They are more similar than some may think.
Well, the best part is we have the foundational structure in place to survive and thrive, even if Tua flops or injures himself out of the league. It was the reason why i was adamantly opposed to making any moves to move up - I would have been furious if we traded a boatload of picks for Burrow. Keep building this team up to the point where QB's are interchangeable. I still believe that despite that you need a franchise level quality starter to win in the playoffs consistently.
And for the record, I don't think ANY of us who supported Tannehill want anything but the best for Tua as a Miami Dolphin. The dream scenario, to me, is he comes in game 1 and lights it up, and plays all year at an OROY/pro-bowl level! That would mean he was the right choice (most would agree already), highly football-smart (proven, IMHO), the health issues are overstated (/pray), and the Dolphins are looking FANTASTIC going forward. Nothing would make me happier for this team. Sidenote: They need to get his jersey # figured out so we can start loading up on Tua gear!
Why the animous / jealousy to rt17? he played hard when he was here, took a beating and always tried to play hurt. Did the organization proud. I so dont get people who wish ill on everyone that leaves. If they dogged it here and were embarrassments off the field, sure, but dudes that busted their hump and have blood in the ground here? No, never.
I was, and still remain in the minority who truly believe Tannehill always was what he showed himself to be with the Titans. I don’t believe the naysayers who think this season with the Titans was some sort of fluke. Tannehill’s going to be the next Brees in my opinion, the quarterback that’s going to be on the top of everyone’s tongue for the next several years to come. I’m older than most here and have watched football long enough to recognize talent and know a GOOD team when I see them. Tannehill’s always has the talent. The Dolphins were never a good team.
Don’t get me wrong, I only want Tagovailoa to succeed as well. He’s a Dolphin now and coming to a team with a storied history. He’s going to be the future of the Dolphins and anyone who is a fan of the team wants everyone to succeed.
Wow.. now THAT is a bold prediction. It would also be the first time in NFL history anything like that has happened, where a QB plays statistically average for 6 seasons and then plays elite (that's what Brees is) for many years to come. Much more likely (based on historical probabilities) is that 2019 was a fluke like Dalton's 2015 or Tannehill plays at a sustained above average level but nowhere near elite like in 2019. We'll see. I think you just made this thread more interesting lol.
And actually it was seven seasons. Not that Tannehill played that many seasons (he lost one due to injury as we know), but the span of time was seven seasons, which likely resulted in slightly greater variation in his surroundings during that period of time. So it's an even slightly tougher argument to make, that the same team's surroundings were like a ball-and-chain on a quarterback over a span of seven years, in a league geared toward parity among teams. Anyway, it doesn't look like Vegas is anywhere near convinced: https://titanswire.usatoday.com/2020/04/10/tennessee-titans-ryan-tannehill-odds-nfl-mvp/
