Room to grow and reach seem to be the trendy words for this dolphins draft.

There goes Zach Moss to the bills, even he would have been a better pick for us at #70 than freaking Brandon Jones. :headwall:

Might as well. I think a lot of people may have gotten ahead of themselves on hype. It's clear the front office didn't decide a surprise finish to the season was reason to go all-in. They have a plan and they are sticking to it. They are drafting young guys with a decent floor and super high ceilings. Will they be the immediate impact that others players may bring? Probably not, but that's clearly not a priority right at the moment. If several of these guys can hit their peak while the "better" guys stay about the same level, we could easily have the better players going into 2021-2022.

We aren't thinking short term with these picks, and you may not agree or like it, but it's something you have to recognize and accept at this point.

If you say so, just as a general rule I don't believe in reaching and over drafting guys no matter how much "potential" you think they might have.

I’d rather have Tua, Laremy Tunsil, and Minkah Fitzpatrick than Tua and the FOUR other guys from this draft.

I don't think we are "overdrafting". We are just choosing prospects with higher ceilings over higher floors.

I don't like it and it will probably bite them in the ***. They're assuming they can tell what someone's potential is from their experience, not based on their actual play. I've seen attitudes like that before, from former GMs and coaches and it has never turned out well for us. Drafting players with solid college careers and a winning record where they're valued in the draft isn't edgy and doesn't make you look like a genius when it pans out, but it's what builds winners.
Maybe they just decided they could go wild with whatever players they wanted to gamble on this year since they had so many picks, and maybe they'll go back to drafting proven players next draft. But if they keep this up, it will wind up with Grier and Flores looking for another job.

This, that type of attitude is a losing one. They are just stroking their own egos thinking they can "develop" these guys.

Clearly that doesn’t extend to the offensive line, however, where they feel like they have to reach for players early instead of developing ones from the later rounds.

This draft is like the equivalent of the fantasy draft where you see the guy in your league take all of his sleepers early, while everybody else takes solid picks in those rounds, and then that guy gets his *** kicked all season.

I have the last 45 years of watching the NFL. I am not going to put together a doctoral dissertation to post for you here, if that's what you want. It's not that important to me that you agree with me. I'm just telling you what I've learned from what I've seen.

minkah is irrelevant. He didn’t want to be here, he wanted out, we tried to make it work. Can’t have that attitude around when you’re building a team.

The Tunsil trade was a great trade for Miami. I don’t see any other way around it. 2 1sts and 2 2nds? And the guy just got a new 22 mil/year contract?

When that’s done with very little movement, i.e., trading back and getting the same players, it makes it look like they are taking the lazy and unintelligent approach to that.

Goodell just wants to go to bed. Every muscle in his face is screaming "why the hell didn't I just postpone this until July." :chuckle:

This is all full of assumptions which you cannot in any way know and conveniently don't have to prove.

If people want to quibble and say stuff like Iggy could have been had at 35 instead of 30 or Hunt may have made it to pick 44 instead of 39 then go argue amongst yourselves.

Has nothing to do with my special eyes, it's simply that I am not willing to put together a huge file and present it to you here so you can try to figure out why this one or that didn't count. Too much effort wasted on an internet message forum.

Part of the skill in drafting is not only in evaluating players but in knowing where they are likely to fall, and should fall, and getting steals instead of reaches.

    Slightly left of center
I hate the whole "reach" argument. It's what leads to reactionary drafting instead of having a plan. Grier straight up said Iggy was the BPA on their board. He wasn't going to be there the next opportunity they would have had to pick him. Thats not reaching, that's getting the player you want. What # he got picked with is irrelevant and stupid to argue about.

I honestly have no affiliation with this forum and speak to no people that post here outside of this website, but you're missing out on some really good football knowledge if you're not in The Club.

I think patience will be needed with a lot of our picks. No doubt, other than Tua, our draft isn't flashy. I am one of those that have said for a long time build the OL, build the trenches, so I am not going to complain about it now that we are.

I trust Flores, and I don't believe he will put any of these guys on the field if they aren't somewhat ready. Naturally, there will be a learning curve, and some days might not go as well as others. That's okay, as long as they continue to improve. If they can contribute I will be happy. Except for Tua, I don't see any of the guys, so far, as a swing for the fences type. That's okay with me, I am fine with doubles. Our team is being built with Flores type guys who are team-first guys and who know their role(s). There may be a time where we are 1 or 2 players away from being special, but right now we are just trying to build the core. I think these guys will compliment who we already have nicely. When today is over, some of them will be looking over their shoulder. Competition is a good thing. :-)

FYI: Remember, the draft starts at 12 noon today.

To those not happy with the lack of offensive talent, apart from Tua and the OL, I remember an adage I first heard during the Bears' great season and run to Super Bowl XX; offences win games, but defences win championships.

This isn’t only true for football. When Roberto Mancini became head coach of Manchester City, his first priority was to stop us leaking goals. Once he done that, he started to play a more expansive game and City were scoring goals for fun.

My point is, get the D right first, and the offence will follow.

Charles Davis just gave us an A and Bucky Brooks a B+ so far.

Bucky said he gets what we're doing and we're tougher, more physical, and ready to play "big boy football" this season.

Good to hear from the so-called experts.

Dol-Fan Dupree's barely informed take on Day 2:

I am a homer. I am fine with that. I have more fun being hopeful during the offseason. I don't care if I am disappointed in the regular season. Though Coach Flores gives me a lot of hope he can coach these players up after winning 5 games with duct tape and bubble gum.

Robert Hunt: I am trying to think of the last non-finesse type lineman they drafted. Rex Hadnot? Just watched his story, teared up a little. Very happy for him. However, this is sports, not soap operas. Looking at his tape, he looks good. I think he could be a good to great right guard. Wouldn't it be amazing to have inside linemen who aren't complete trash? Feels like it has been since the Sparano days since that has been a strength. He is big, he moves well, especially his feet. I like it when linemen have choppy feet. I like this pick.

Raekwon Davis: A player the Dolphins need. They only have two of these type of players on the roster. This guy is talented. He easily has top 10 pick in the draft talent. His arms are so long and he is good at using them. When he gets his hands on a player it is over and he does what he needs to do. Looks to be the perfect player for this defense.

Bradon Jones: I want to call him Lil' Flores. A very smart scrappy player who just wants to be on the field. Is he the best athlete? No. Is he someone who is good enough to be out there and do will be in the right positions. He will not complain like someone we all know. The type of player you want on this team. Maybe he was over drafted, but that is silly. No one knows when someone is going to pick someone. Look at the Seahawk draft. No one thought any of their players would be picked where they would be picked.

Overall they all seem like good people. Which is always nice. Good people and good players. If this season does happen, I am excited to see how they do.
