This is a team that - like New England - believes in making Special Teams a strength.

At this point in the draft most players are throwaways and lotto tickets who have the ceiling of special teamer.

But that doesn’t necessarily translate to taking a long-snapper with a draft pick. There has to be an assessment of what other teams are doing in that regard and whether that degree of resource is needed.

Off-topic a little bit, but I have to say having a boatload of picks made this draft a lot of fun. I hope we never see drafts again were we only have 7 picks or less.

It is not unheard of or even uncommon, just for the Dolphins because we were blessed to have Denny for so many years. Here is what I found,

In the last 2-3 rounds that kind of **** is thrown out the window, especially this year. There is no consensus like it seems from TV. You identify your guys and get them, then go after UDFAs.

    Good stuff man. Thanks.

I guess I like the idea of a payer being a position, like TE or LB, that also has long-snapping duties. As opposed to a player being nothing but a long snapper, if that makes sense. But, I get it now. Thanks for doing the research. :knucks:

Last round guys. Who knows, maybe we find a diamond in the rough, or two. Whatever happens, you can rest assured the 2020 Miami Dolphins should be a LOT better than the 2019 Miami Dolphins.

Another reach, like we couldn't have picked up this or another long snapper as an UDFA.

But hey I guess some of the guys on here will start to make up excuses about how long snappers are so important in today's game to justify the ****ty pick.

IMO the schedule will be harder, so I think the playoff crowd may be a bit ahead of things, but 6-8 wins is certainly pretty reasonable and reachable.

Well, we got our long-snapper so we don't need to worry about that.

I've been saying it for a long time now. Grier has been the one constant in our terrible drafting throughout the years. I have never had much faith in him.

Nawww man. 8-8 is our floor. 9-7 feels about right.

Definitely could be a Wildcard team. Keep in mind, 14 go this year ;)

I appreciate the information, but now the question becomes, how many long-snappers have played in the NFL, and has there been any discernible value associated with finding one with a draft pick versus finding one as an undrafted free agent?

It wouldn't surprise me if we hit 9-7. Just saying I also won't be shocked if we don't make a huge leap. Playing both the AFC and NFC West is a big leap from the NFC East. It also wouldn't shock me if Fitz does his best impression of a crater since that's kinda been his MO.

LOL...just saw this blurb from our friends over at Rotoworld:

    • Dolphins selected LSU LS Blake Ferguson with the No. 185 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Ferguson (6'3/229) was considered the best snapper of snaps that must travel a longer distance than typical snaps by those who evaluate such things. He will bring national championship experience to plays that require the ball be snapped farther back than usual.

Seems mostly pointless lol. Still, Malcolm Perry the kid from Navy is intriguing. Javelin Guidry and Lamar Jackson in the secondary. Zack Shackleford the UT C, Michael Warren at RB.

Apparently the Panthers are the first team to draft all defense (with at least 7 or more picks). Interesting, will see how that pays off or doesn't.

Tennessee just drafted this kid from Hawaii called Cole McDonald. They just showed some of his highlights. Color me impressed with his arm. Called him a project, but looks like he's not short on confidence.

He's a year older than me. Judging by that, he should have retired a decade ago.

Denny was one of the final training camp cuts last season after he was "beat out" by an undrafted rookie. I'm putting that in quotes because Denny was clearly better, but he was entering his 15th year. However, we cut the rookie two days later and grabbed yet another rookie that fell off from another team's final cuts. So if you believe the hype, Denny was beat out by two different rookies...one who didn't have a single snap for us.

To put it mildly, I was insane furious that they cut him!

Why'd we draft a long-snapper this season? Because the new rookie's first few snaps last season went sailing, several others were off-target and contributed to missed field goals. Remember how often we went for it last year on 4th and 2? Long-snapping was a factor in those calls since we really missed Denny's consistency. This kid from LSU was regarded the best in this draft class so we took a flyer on him....which I think was a smart move.

Side note- I researched the league's retirement policy last year for 15 year players and it turned out, Denny would actually make about $200k more per season retired than if he kept playing. He's making around $1.4M a year in league compensation...not bad for an old long-snapper at all!

So you are saying if we didn't draft him somebody else would? And there were no other adecuate snappers we could have picked up as UDFAs without investing an early 6th rounder?

My problem isn't the fact we drafted a longsnapper. My problem is that we done so when we already have one.

I'm not sure if anyone would have drafted him or not...maybe they wouldn't. But if anyone needed a long-snapper, he was the one they would likely draft. He may have been there in the 7th or as a UFDA, but why take the chance when he was clearly a position of need?

The fact that we drafted one indicates that we, actually, did not have had one (at least one the coaches had confidence in).
