Obviously, I am no expert and have said many times I rely on other people's evaluations. I listen to move the sticks podcast and am a big fan of both Daniel and Bucky because they don't act as they get it right all the time. They even have segments where they talk about their misses and evaluate what they can do better.
Bucky has a philosophy where he believes teams should try for doubles instead of swinging for the fence. I like that strategy. My reasoning is this, it's impractical to think we can have stars at all of our positions. We need just regular guys who understand and do their job. I don't think the Patriots were a team that was loaded for bear. I think they had guys who were well-coached, who knew their job, did their job, and when the pressure was on, executed for the win. Don't get me wrong. I think we should always be looking to upgrade, but sometimes that is not practical. Star players eventually want big money. Letting guys go in FA, and hopefully being compensated with comp picks may not be the worst strategy. Any thoughts on this?

What exactly does that even mean, hitting for doubles vs. home runs? What examples are they giving?

I would think the Patriots are actually not a great example. Just off the top of my head, Moss and Gronk were both home run type shots on huge talent with big question marks. Both worked out well for them. However, they have had numerous misses as well, most notably at WR in the draft, which seems to be an Achilles heel for Bellichick.

Ultimately, you have to find your coach and QB. Once you do that, surround them with good and consistent talent and then take your shots on big, gamebreaking talent.

The resident draft geniuses in club, CK and Simon. Same guys who told me how dumb I was when I told them Hartline would far outperform Turner and Larry English was a bust or below average at best, and a hundred other disagreements that history shows them wrong on....,..

I think what Bucky means by that is it is better to get on base rather than try for the fence every time and risk striking out. For us, it means it's better to get a guy who is a solid contributor rather than a boom or bust guy. Solid contributors stay in the league, and if you get enough of them add value to a team. Boom or bust guys end up like Dion Jordan who I don't think actually helped us one day in his career, and with those guys you have to keep starting over. Maybe the Ravens would have been a better team to use as an example. Their drafts are solid and they are able to add to their core, of solid contributors, year after year.

Let's compare the above to the most recent Super Bowl-winner:

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/kan/draft.htm

Six Pro Bowl players in 2019.

Patrick Mahomes, drafted in the first round in 2017 (same year as Charles Harris).

Tyreek Hill, drafted in the fifth round in 2016.

Travis Kelce, drafted in the third round in 2013.

Chris Jones, drafted in the second round in 2016.

Frank Clark, drafted in the second round (by the Seahawks) in 2015.

Mecole Hardman, drafted in the second round in 2018.

You mean the ones that said that Tankersley was a great pick, ond CK called him the best value in the Dolphins draft?

Sign Clowney to a 1 year deal. Why not? We have the room to do it and then we can let him go next year and still have the room. We rent for one year.

I don’t mind it but it’s not happening imo. Clowney wanted 20M a year at the start of FA and supposedly has dropped his asking price to like 17m. And he still wants a multi year deal. His production doesn’t match those demands. Very good run defender, will play hurt (as he did last year) but he’s a pretty average pass rusher. And he rejected us last year which I’m sure can’t sit well.

    I think you’re 100% right here.

But add in the fact that there probably is no Byron Jones without Tunsil being traded. Both Jones and Tunsil are probably top 5 at their positions but OL is more of a unit rather then simply just evaluating individuals. Plus Jones got about 16.5 per where as Tunsil got like 22.

When you look at it that way we really got:
    2 1sts
    1 2nd
    Davenport
Jones and Howard (With Tunsil cap space on his new deal assuming he resigns at those number with us)

    for
    Tunsil
    Stills
    4th
    6th.

Declining an opportunity like that would be nothing short of horrible asset management by any front office. I don’t care who is in charge you make that deal 100% of the time.
