I was sitting in my office yesterday around 3 PM and I hear screaming from the other side of the house- I figured it was my 21 year old on her phone. But then my wife starts screaming for me and in that instant, I remembered my daughters weren't home...one's staying with grandparents and the other drove up to the mountains for the day.

So I run across the house and there's a 24 year old girl coming down the stairs. She has a rod iron cross in her right hand that looked like it was made out of rebar. In her left hand is a picture of our youngest daughter when she was 3. And this girl is screaming "Don't kill me" as our pitbull mix jumps on her trying to get her to play...we later find out that this intruder is terrified of dogs. This girl is hysterical, paranoid and obviously very confused.

My wife asks her why she has the picture of our daughter and she says it's her baby. Then she says "Where am I? I thought this was my mom's house." Between a bunch of paranoid comments and reactions, she tells us that she was with her boyfriend and a few other friends, they got into an argument, and she decided to walk away instead of it turning into a fight. We're out in the country, mind you....there's nothing around us someone would be there visiting outdoors during the quarantine...so nothing she's saying is making any sense. She doesn't know what city she's in or how she got there.

My wife does a decent job of calming the girl down some and takes her outside. I mean, she's still paranoid and freaking out...but to a lesser degree. I run through the house to make sure she was alone and then we call the police; not necessarily for home invasion but because this girl was out of her mind from something. Drugs, heat stroke, mental illness...we have no idea. It was pretty sunny here yesterday so if she had walked far enough, maybe she was severely dehydrated or something. Her eyes were clear though and she was responsive and answering questions....so I don't know.

Meanwhile my wife asks her if there's anyone we can call and we get in touch with her mother, who lives almost 40 miles away. The mystery deepens how the heck she was in our upstairs bedroom in Campobello, SC. And after the mom is caught up on everything she immediately asks "where's the baby?" This girl had a 3 year old and she thinks it's with the boyfriend, but the girl is not sure about anything.

Next thing we know, an officer arrives and so does a Federal Marshall to hunt down the baby. Everything escalates so quickly and it's like, what the hell is happening to us? This feels like a movie plot or something because it's so off the wall. They find the boyfriend and the baby within like 5 minutes though...they must have had a ton of cops in our area for this....and the federal marshall asks if I want to press charges for trespassing. He tells me the girl has a warrant for her arrest in North Carolina but he can't arrest her on that since we're just across the state line (meaning it wasn't a felony warrant), and I tell him that I can't see any reason for us to press charges since I don't think she was trying to rob us or had criminal intent.

Anyway, the girl left with her mom and they were supposed to meet up with the boyfriend somewhere to get the baby, then they were bringing the girl to the hospital to get her checked out. The mom is a psychologist and she said that her kid doesn't have any mental issues....so she was either high on something or maybe dehydrated/heat stroke. We may never know the full story since so little of it made sense.

I can't help but think how many ways this could have gone wrong- what if I had found the girl instead of my nurse wife? Would she have swung that rebar cross at me? Would I have shot her if given the chance? Would the dog have attacked if she came at me violently? I was honesty more scared a few hours later as I processed all of this...there's a chance I would have killed that girl. And she was really good looking/clean cut, plus her mom said that the girl is a great mother who doesn't mess with drugs. Everything about this was bizarre.

I sort of wonder, maybe the boyfriend gave her a roofie? She really had no idea where she was or what was happening. My wife is going to try to call the girl's mom today so we can see how she's doing, so I'll post a follow-up when I can. It was just absolutely insane...

What the heck? I don't know if you are a writer or not but maybe you should turn that into a movie somehow. Weird man.

Sounds like she got roofied. I had a couple of friends get roofied a few years ago, and they acted very similar.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. She was "there" mentally yet she was also in a complete panic because she was so confused...she had no idea how she got here, what had happened, etc. Her eyes were open and alert though and she didn't look high. I don't know all the drugs kids do today but you can clearly tell if someone is on meth, etc and she didn't have that look or appearance. Plus she had good teeth, no acne, etc that comes from drug use....she was a really good lookin' gal.

I write marketing material for a living (websites, brochures, etc) but I've never done anything in fiction...that was too crazy for even me to come up with. I'm really hoping my wife can connect with the girl's mom today and provide some answers on what the heck happened. The more I think about it, the more puzzled I am at the whole thing.

The parents insisted that she was a really great mom that didn't party and was super responsible, so I'm thinking it had to be dehydration or someone drugged her.

Here's the girl who broke in our house- https://www.facebook.com/briggs.manness

My wife talked to the girl's mom today and she was back to normal shortly after leaving our house. She did get her daughter back okay and has felt fine since then...she swears that she didn't take any drugs or drink anything yesterday. She did explain to her mom that when she left the boyfriend, she walked back into the woods and then got lost for a decent bit of time, so her mom is wondering if this could be something mental health related just starting to surface that was triggered by being lost in the woods and panicking.

Anyway, we'll probably never have the full answer but I'm glad her and the baby are okay. It looks like my wife and the girl's mom will turn into friends since they just talked for 15 minutes...if we learn anything more I'll definitely update you guys.
