Putting Mike Gesicki's 2019 season into perspective is pretty simple: It was among the best ever for a Miami Dolphins tight end, and arguably THE best for a player at this same stage of his career.

In his second NFL season, Gesicki finished with 51 catches for 570 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that would put him in the top 10 list for all-time seasons for a Miami tight end for receptions (8th) and touchdown catches (tied for 6th). The receiving yards rank 12th in Dolphins history among tight ends for a single season.

But for a Dolphins tight end in his first or second year, Gesicki set new highs for receptions and touchdowns, and his 570 yards would be third behind only the 598 for Randy McMichael in his second season in 2003 and the 575 for Ferrell Edmunds in his rookie year in 1988. Based on his emergence late last season, which saw him score five touchdowns in the final six games, Gesicki is an emerging talent at tight end, though he's not overly concerned about how he's being viewed.

"The outside perception, that’s something that I kind of try to ignore just because the opinions and the perceptions of everybody outside of our locker room, our building, it doesn’t really mean a ton," Gesicki said. "I could go out there and have a good game and everybody’s happy and then the next week not produce as much and people that had the same opinion about me the week before, had kind of changed. So it’s not something that I really pay a ton of attention to.

"I do appreciate those that do believe in me and do give me that trust and support me and our team and our organization, because those are people that I appreciate, but for the most part, I’m just kind of taking this thing day-by-day, focus right now on myself because that’s kind of the situation that we’re in, to get better and improve and make sure that I’m ready and compete whenever training camp rolls around. I am excited for this upcoming season and we’ll just continue to work and get back there whenever we can.”

    ******************************************************

This post isn't mean to start a debate on whether you like Gesicki or not. It is more of me giving some props and a shout out to one of our players. But, with that said, I mean, how could you not like him? I mean...wtf? :chuckle:

For so many years, I have wanted a receiver on this team who is tall, strong and athletic and is a "go up and get it", etc, type of receiver. Now, with Gesicki, Parker(if he can keep his skirt off) and Preston Wlliiams, if he continues to emerge as he was doing before the injury, we could have three!!

I just love how this staff used Gesicki last season. I've been saying for so long, since he was drafted, how he should be used and viewed. It really shows you just how much of a "scam" was Adam Gase. Last season was exactly how it should have been done. We also know that it can take TEs time to produce. I always said that I don't give an excrement of how he is viewed based on a traditional TE role, just go out an be a play maker, help us win games and that's just what he did. I mean, there were plays where he would actually go up high and reach over and in front of the defender to catch the ball. For so long, that's what I've wanted to see.

Fitzy knew how to use these receivers. With them being able to go up and get it, it allowed Fitzy to have the confidence to throw it up there to the right spot and these guys would most likely go up and come down with the ball. So, they made Fitzy last season just as much as Fitzy made them.

...and as for Gesicki...well...if for nothing else, he did catch the winning TD pass that beat the Patsies and greatly hurt their post season hopes last year, forced an off season where King Brady gets traded and help start the possible fall of a dynasty. A division rival, no less. Wooo!! Rejoice, mofo'ers!

Man our tight ends have sucked if those are top 10 numbers.

That could easily have been a highlight clip for Fitzmagic. I know everybody is chomping at the bit to throw Tua into the arena but, you got to give Fitz a fair shot to continue the run from the second half of last season. There's a new OC, there are a lot of rookies and a lot of raw talent that needs to be mentored and developed, including Tua. I would strongly suggest to let Fitz run with it, at least until he falters.

I think the key to Mike Gesicki breaking out necessarily has to be getting him going deep. That was really his thing in college, and it hasn't really translated professionally.

It's probably easier said than done, given that he's for all intents and purposes now a wide receiver and not a tight end. He's going to have to find the technical tools to get off the LOS and down the field against DBs, rather than the modified TE position Penn State had him at. The amount of lumps you're taking in the run game and are just too great, especially not when you're out there fielding Saquon Barkley against a future insurance salesman.

I think there's certainly hope there with Tua's remarkable accuracy on 20+ yard passes that aren't super deep, especially if you get that accuracy to work for you on high ball placement. Then again, you've also got some relatively stiff competition there, with Preston Williams and DeVante Parker also quite capable of going up to get high passes on some of the kinda routes you expect from Gesicki.

He’s one dimensional, which nowadays every team has this flex tight end who can’t block, like to see him improve his ability to get off the line and separate, it’s not easy for him because he’s so long Legged, it’s hard for him to be precise in route..Im not his biggest fan but am rooting for him to prove that high 2nd round value and to be as good as the other tight end I wanted in his place..

Well, if we're talking about at this stage of his career, then Geskicki is really high on the list for Dolphins TEs. As was said, the production through two seasons has been really low in franchise history.

    1. Randy McMichael: 88 catches, 1083 yards, 6 TDs
    2. Mike Gesicki: 73 catches, 772 yards, 6 TDs
    3. Ferrell Edmunds: 65 catches, 957 yards, 6 TDs
    4. Joe Rose: 36 catches, 465 yards, 2 TDs
    5. Charles Clay: 34 catches, 445 yards, 5 TDs

McMichael is the standard bearer through three seasons as well. He had a big third year, with 73 catches, 794 yards, and 4 TDs. He actually ranks 4th all time in catches by a Fin through three seasons, regardless of position, behind Landry, Bess and Chambers. His totals through three years are:

    161 receptions
    1874 yards
    10 TDs

So, Geskicki would need to have a season along the lines of 88 receptions, 1102 yards and 4 TDs to match him at that point. If healthy, I think that Gesicki could actually jump into the top five regardless of position with TDs, as he only needs 7 TDs to make it. But the others are probably too lofty at this point.

Considering how varied TE use is and always has been in different offensive systems it's really hard to compare receiving talent by volume numbers.

Gesicki has gotten great at those quick slants. He runs that one route about as well as it can be run. He also runs decent crossers and outs. His seam route is improving but he doesn't screen out the defender as well as he could.

Fitz has to love the prospect of having Gesicki, Parker and Williams as targets. He's not the most accurate QB and it's harder to over-throw those 6'5"/6'6" guys. Those big targets just provide a large margin for error.

    No doubt.

Personally I always thought McMichael was super underrated by the league and even fans.

Obviously he wasnt Tony Gonzalez or Antonio Gates, but with poor QB play he was always a fairly reliable target that could break a big play.

I'll never forget the time, I believe it was against the Rams, it was either 3rd or 4th and forever and they accepted a penalty to push us farther back with no reason.

Next play, McMichael straight up the seam for a TD.

Yeah, he was very good. Between him, Ricky and Chambers, the offense should have been able to be extremely productive during the 2002 and 03 seasons. But we had one of the worst starting QBs in the league, and a coach who was totally unwilling to try and continue to move the ball through the air and gain first downs once he had a lead. Consequently, we were in the bottom five to seven teams in almost all passing stats in that time.

I have long wondered how good those teams could have been had we been able to trade for Trent Green or Matt Hasselbeck in 2001 to replace Fiedler, like everyone thought would happen. Barring injury, I think that we would have won 13+ games a few times, and the entire history of the franchise from that point forward would have been totally different. And heck, we might have even put a preemptive stop to the Patriots dynasty in the process.
