Just curious because here at the ripe age of 30 I've taken up learning to draw. I'm not very good, which is why I've always been intimidated to try, but I'm actually enjoying the process of getting better and seeing anyone can actually do it, even if it takes some time.

Anyone else here do anything art related for fun or work? Any beginner tips? Right now I'm working through a book called "How to draw what you see" by Rudy De Reyna. Its helped a lot so far.

I used to a lot, including majoring in Architecture in college for seven years. (Didn't graduate because of some high level math classes they forced us to take). These days, I mostly just do art with my kids.

The key is really just to find a medium that you feel comfortable with and enjoy, and then practice. Some people are amazing at coming up with ideas out of their mind, but that's never been something that I'm good at. I'm better at looking at something, and then replicating it as best I can on paper.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get started. Really, I'd say just get a ream of computer paper and some standard #2 pencils. If you'd like to have some step by step pointers, there are lots and lots of channels on Youtube that you can watch. There are also tons of Instagram blogs where people share their art, and you can get inspired by seeing what others have done.

Either way, don't be too hard on yourself.

That's actually pretty cool. You seem to know or have experience with a lot of different things.

Sometimes it's hard to see progress because as I get better I choose more complicated things to attempt lol I find it's been really useful to go back and redraw something I did a week or so ago just to see that I am in fact improving.

It's been about a month of drawing something every day and about 2 weeks of structured trying to get better lol

I've enjoyed it as a hobby though because I tend to be self critical, but it actually helps instead of hurts with this as long as I keep my expectations realistic.

Yeah, practice is all that will ever help you improve. And then to find your own style, and what you're comfortable with. After you draw, or paint, or work in whatever other medium that you want to or enjoy for a while, its going to look like your work after a while. And that will change and improve over time, but it will always be you. So don't worry too much about how it doesn't look exactly like what this other person might do, its ok. You'll draw your people, or animals, or nature, or buildings, or whatever. Its better to try and master what comes out of you naturally than to try and force something else.

I thought about taking a novice art class as well...I think it would be fun to paint landscapes and stuff like that. I was never good at drawing but I guess it really doesn't matter as a hobby.

That's pretty much it, as a hobby it's not so important to be amazing. Even if it would be awesome to be amazing haha.
