By all accounts, it sounds like the WR room is lacking after Parker and Williams. Unfortunately, Covid has placed us in a weird world where Hurns and Wilson are opting out. Going into the season, I would have said that WR is our strongest unit, but now it is concerning. Let's take a look at what we have.

Parker - Could arguably the best player on the team right now. That being said, Parker always seems to get nicked up and misses games.
Williams - By all accounts he looks better than ever.

Grant - I don't know about you guys, but he has a love/hate relationship with me. There are days where I am like "Wow, this guy could be Az Hakim." Then there are other days when I am like, "This guy should just stick to kick returns." He is so inconsistent and will look great one day and have a case of the dropsies the next. I really do not trust him at all, and I could not imagine wanting to throw him a pass on third down. Sure, he absolutely has that big play potential and is the type of guy that you design plays for. In my mind, he is a limited snap/situational guy.

Ford - He looked good when he played last season. He has the frame that he could play in the slot or on the boundary if Parker got hurt. I think Grant is limited to the slot. This is a big plus for Ford. I would feel most comfortable with him as our starting slot guy.

Louis - He was already cut once, and I don't see him cracking the final roster.

Jennings - There was a lot of hope that he coulda been a steal, but really has underwhelmed. I don't see him making the squad.

Rogers - He is a vet and would certainly bring experience to the team. He feels like year-to-year guy, so keeping him on the final roster feels short sighted. That being said, Hurns and Wilson will be back next year, so perhaps this is a viable path.

Perry - He is an interesting guy because he has had flashes in camp. He is super raw and is essentially being brought in as an athlete. He is facing an uphill battle against more seasoned players. That being said, his position versatility is a plus. With Rosen looking better, I bet we keep three QBS. Perry could sorta make up for that by being a 6th WR/4th RB. The only question is that if injuries started happening, would you be comfortable with him playing an expanded role? Going into the season, I saw him as a practice squad player with upside. I worry that putting him on the 53 could be asking a bit much.

So what do you do in this situation?

A - Roll with what we have. We know that we are getting guys back next year.
B - Swap a late round pick to snag a new receiver. I sorta think that this is a "you get what you pay for" type of thing.
C- Swap a serious draft pick (mid round+). You may get a better player, but is he better than Hurns and Wilson? We also probably have to pay him as well. I do think that we wind up drafting a WR early next year. Are we over committing draft picks at this point.
D- Wait around till cuts. This is sorta like a lottery ticket. We really don't know what we are getting. Most likely somebody's trash. Maybe we get lucky and get someone who gets cut due to a numbers game. Maybe. Waiting puts the player behind the 8 ball because they need to essentially immediately learn the playbook and the coaches really don't know him.

    Good detailed write up.

I personally love DeVante. He's absolutely what I want in a #1 WR and his personality seems to be really great.

I love Williams' potential. I think that he could develop into a really good player. I see a lot of Herman Moore in him.

I like what Ford can be as well. He looked really solid as a #3/slot guy when he was finally given a chance last year.

I'm a WVU fan, and loved what Jennings did in college. He saved now Panthers' QB Will Grier's rear end over and over for two years. He can make the tough short catch and is fast enough to run past people also. I think if given the chance, he can be a solid NFL WR.

Its a largely unproven top four, but we aren't going to be a good team this year, so its the perfect time to give them a chance to shine.

Byron Jones apparently made Williams look like a high school WR this scrimmage.

That's going to be the problem with Williams, he is going to have a few big days against low competition but be invisible against better competition.

Jones is a Pro Bowler and the highest paid player in the league at his position, and Williams was an undrafted rookie a year ago who's only played in eight games. Its going to happen. Lets give Williams some time and see what he can gradually be capable of. The goal should be to become the best team possible down the road, not to rush things.

Williams is hyped to be a #1 WR with potential to be a superstar on this site.

I have faith in Ford as our slot guy this year. He's paid his dues and I think the production will be there. Jakeem is all flash and no consistency. Love the guy, he's got the heart and the speed, but not the size to ever be anything more than a great kick returner. I think Jennings makes the team due to lack of talent, Perry is my sleeper pick.
It's interesting to hear the hot takes on Preston Williams. One day i'll hear that he's Mossin fools in practice and the next day I hear about how he's dropping passes and being shut down. His rookie season was cut short, he's already overachieved given his draft status (or lack there of), I'm definitely hyped about the guy, but Herman Moore is a lofty comparison and an unfair one at that. He's got the #2 spot on lock and if Parker remains healthy and dominant then i'm sure Williams will see his fair share of 1V1 opportunities. We'll see...Receiving core hasn't really been a concern of mine personally, but now that it's been mentioned, we are a Parker injury away from being extremely inexperienced.

Well, Herman Moore-like. Moore himself took a long time to get rolling in the NFL, even as a first round pick. He had 11 catches his rookie year, then 51, 61 and 72, before breaking totally out with 123 for 1600+ yards and 14 TDs in year five. That kind of gradual ramp up is what I would hope for with Williams. Not expect of course, but I think could be there if he's given the chance and we run the right offense to maximize his skills.

I'm a firm believer that more than anything DeVante has been the victim of poor coaching and schemes that don't fit his skills. Philbin just didn't like him for whatever reason, and he basically didn't get on the field until the second half of his rookie year. And then Gase badly miscast him, trying to put him in positions to maximize YAC, when that just isn't Parker's game, because its what Gase is obsessed with.

He certainly does have #1 potential...and he's competing against one of the best corners in the league daily. That's a fantastic advantage for him to grow quickly and up his game even more. If he was torching Jones in training camp, THEN I'D BE WORRIED!

I've always believed Devante would be a star. I need to see William's more consistent on the field catching what he should.

The good news is if the 1-2 punch is strong it should open up our #3 receiver at least a bit.

Grant and Ford both provide a useful skill set. Ford might be more reliable while Grant has a higher big play potential.

The thing to watch will be whether they can become consistent.

I wouldnt surprised to see a TE lined up at the #4 or even occasionally #3 spot.
