I wonder if our current QB will get 233+ pages about him.

Imo Deserved the job based on last years performance relative to the surrounding roster, respect of the coaches, exp with new system.. nothing to do with Tua. Will keep the job until his team falls out of playoff contention..

It’s his final chance to make a run and see how long he can go.

No surprise there. Fitz has earned the job and Tua needs to sit and learn. This is as it should be.

And it's also the case that this team has a legitimate shot to make the playoffs with Fitzpatrick at QB. With Tua that's much less likely, simply because he's a rookie.

So a QB that was drafted #5 overall, who many on here were afraid that wouldn't make it to #5 because "he's that good", he's a "franchise QB" and also a "generational talent" can't beat out a journeyman QB for the starting job? And you're all fine with this? A QB drafted that high should start from game one unless he's drafted to a team with a hall of famer in front of him. Another wasted pick

A lot of great QB's needed some time to adjust to the NFL, so there's nothing wrong with sitting for awhile. Now if Tua isn't clearly the starter next year I agree he's a bust. But not starting at the outset of this season — don't forget Tua might start midway through the season — is hardly a reason to think he's a wasted pick. I for one have high hopes for him.

Many were talking about him going #1 overall. A QB that is thought of that highly should be starting from day one, in my opinion. He can't even beat out Fitz.

Patrick Mahomes — the best QB in the NFL today — didn't even start his rookie season until the last game, week 17. Don't worry so much about Tua not starting the first game of his rookie season. 2nd season no excuses though.

He earned it but I fully expect him to revert to the real Ryan Fitzpatrick sooner than later. He's done it everywhere he has been in his career.

This is absurd. You don't just automatically play a guy based on his draft position.

Especially with Tua who has been recovering from an injury and during a truncated offseason it's OK to be cautious and take your time. Personally, I don't see Fitz as having a full seasons worth of high level play in him, so I suspect we see Tua at some point. But Fitz earned his start as much for being the heart and soul of the team last year and a veteran leader and mentor through camp this year as much or moreso than his actual talent. He deserves the shot regardless of how it goes.

Take it case by case, player by player. Drawing such a far reaching conclusion based on literally nothing is just empty *****ing.

    Nor did Rogers.

Players taken in the top 5 picks should be NFL ready and should be good enough to start from day one. Rodgers was taken in the 20s and was behind Brett Favre

Not intending to get into a pissing contest with you but do you really want me to start listing off top 5 or 10 qb draft picks that were thrown to the wolves day one and their careers become a bust?

This is the thing that causes me to shake my head about collegiate to pro athletes. Since were discussing Tua, let’s go that route. Throughout his college career, Tagovailoa lined up against maybe 5 or 6 NFL caliber defenders every game, every week. All the other defensive players, their football career was finished upon graduating. Now Tua, or any other drafted QB is now lining up against 11 NFL caliber players. That’s an entirely different situation and to simply assume that a qb in college excelled in the NCAA, he’s going to excel in the NFL is ludicrous.

Hopefully Tua will get some playing time this season...whether he relieves Fitz because we’re that far ahead or behind...or Flores feels it’s time ie; Marino finally taking over for Woodley. But until the time comes that your thoroughbred race horse is ready to run, you don’t put him on the track to run until he’s ready

There's no pissing contest. I'm just stating my opinion and reading yours and others. Who's to say that those qbs drafted in the top 10 that you mentioned wouldnt have been busts if they started right away or not? Tua could have very well been the #1 draft pick. Are you telling me that a QB drafted #1 shouldnt be ready to start day one? I'd bet that Burrow is going to start

Remember that this year we have the oddball situation of an abbreviated camp and no preseason games.

What I think they should do with Tua this year is build some special packages for him to play in game in game out, and then take stock of where the team is at the bye week (after 10 games). If the team is still in playoff contention, continue in that vein; if it's not in playoff contention, start Tua for the remaining six games.

Nope, you have to judge each player and situation combination on their own merits. We don't NEED to throw him to the wolves. It was pretty clear from the end of last season that the staff wanted Fitz back to act as a bridge, so it shouldn't really be a shock or dissapointment that it is actually happening. Throw in the truncated offseason, all the new personnel (most of the OL and both RBs) in a new system and it's pretty reasonable to see Tua on the sidelines at least for a few games. And based on preseason reports, after a slow start, he looks really good, so it's not like we are trying to hide him.

Personally, I think he will be starting sooner rather than later based on Fitz's track record.

Dan Marino didn’t start game 1 as a rookie. He couldn’t beat out Dave Woodley. What a bum and a waste of a first round pick.

Did you not read one thing that I wrote or is reading comprehension not your strong suit? I'll try to type a little slower so you can keep up. My opinion is any QB taken in the top 5, especially one that was being talked about as being #1 overall, should be NFL ready and should be good enough to beat out a journeyman QB and be able to start game one. Remind me where Marino was drafted again? Oh yeah, 27th and Woodley had just taken the dolphins to the Super Bowl the year before. Not even close to the same situation.

Like I said, if you think Fitzpatrick starting is an indictment on Tua and his wasted pick Azz then you are a lost pup in the world of football, you need to rethink the process and figure it out all on your own, you can do it..:)

Eli Manning didn't start his first game with the Giants. That job went to Kurt Warner.

Donovan McNabb didn't start his first game, that was Doug Pederson.

    Phillip Rivers waited two years

Daunte Culpepper waited for a year

Some of y'all just don't like Tua and are using this boost your agenda towards proving your point/predictions. It's not uncommon for rookies to sit and learn. Even high draft picks wait. I'm willing to bet we see Tua fairly soon anyway. By mid October probably.

I'll second the wasted pick aspect but I'd also say his winning or not winning the job right away isnt a proof of it.

What is the scientific basis for a top 5 pick? Is there a sudden drop off starting at pick #6?
What is the history of top 5 QB picks? Do game 1 starters have a better history of production over QBs who don’t start game 1? If so by how much and what is the variation?

Believe me I read what you said, and treated it as unscientific drivel that deserved to be mocked.

What you’re missing is if a quarterback is drafted #1 overall, the drafting team is the worst team in the league. That team has so many more problems than just a quarterback. To take that quarterback, toss him in the game, behind a makeshift offensive line, underneath usually a new head coach or new OC is extremely risky. That drafted quarterback had the benefit of a great college OL and a great college coaching staff...otherwise he and that team wouldn’t have excelled and made said quarterback that valuable. He played in an environment that allowed him to flourish.

A quarterback drafted that high and tossed to the wolves rarely results in him able to transition to the pro level.

Lol @ talking about Marino going at 27. He dropped that far because of the off the field rumors, cocaine, etc. He was going to be a top pick prior to the rumors.

This is a ridiculous argument. If I had it my way Tua wouldn't even see the field until a few games in for mop up duty. I don't want him starting at all until next year.

I pretty much agree with you Tin but truthfully, win lose or draw is like to see Tagovailoa finish the season at week 10 or 11...unless by some crazy miracle we’re in playoff contention with Fitzpatrick

I don't think it'll be miraculous for the team to still be in playoff contention after week 10. In fact I think they'd have to do miraculously poorly to be out of playoff contention by then. They'd probably have to be somewhere around 2-8 or worse for that to happen, and I wouldn't put any money on that. This team isn't going 2-8 over its first 10 games.

I get that and you can make a good argument either way. I just think it's silly to say we drafted this guy in the top 5 so we have to start him now! No we don't. The pro game is way different than college and we aren't competing for a SuperBowl anyway this year. Get him some end of game snaps and get him acclimated this year. Toss him the keys to the franchise next year. We will be further ahead and so will he.

I don't disagree with you. I think the Defense alone is going to be way better than most people think and that will be enough to keep us in games. We do have a really tough opening schedule and we have a young team that did not get the same kind of training this year that they normally would have. We are going to start in a hole compared to the teams we are facing. That said if we can come out of the first 8 games around .500 the schedule opens up on the backside for us and we could make the playoffs. Just need that O line to gel quickly and grow up fast!

Yea I agree with all of that. The only other “if” situation I would include would be how Marino got his start over Woodley...if were losing a game THAT badly, put Tagovailoa in and if he soars then hand him the keys
