Obviously not to a long term big money deal, but on a one year rental. A prove you’ve still got it deal.

He’s more talented than our other RBs. The opportunity to stick it to Adam Gase as well as the opportunity to earn a chance at a good contract next year shouldbgive him very good motivation.

I don't think that fits with the youth movement on this team, where one of the benefits you'd want from that is the establishment of young team leaders who will be with the team a while. Bell instantly becomes a player with stature in the locker room, whereas I think you want such positions of stature to be occupied by some of the young players on the team who are developing in that direction and will be with the team a while.

1 year deal, he wants another contract most likely and Jordan Howard is crap. He might actually play hard for another contract but we shouldnt give it to him. Rental.

    https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article242156446.html

"Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores made clear on Wednesday that he holds veteran running back Le’Veon Bell in high regard, hours before Bell is set to become a free agent after his release from the New York Jets.

But whether it leads to any potential match with Miami is questionable, with the Dolphins already having six running backs under contract and eager to give carries to Myles Gaskin and Matt Breida.

As a vested veteran, Bell doesn’t need to go through waivers. He will become a free agent at 4 p.m. Wednesday, free to sign with any team.

Asked about his team’s run game, Flores said: “Like every other area, it could improve.”

The Jets are responsible for the remaining $6 million on Bell’s 2020 salary, but there is an offset clause that will defray it by the amount of the salary on a new contract with his new team. So Bell could sign a deal at the minimum with a new team.

“Bell is a great player,” Flores said. “We all know that. Has had a lot of production, dynamic player.”

Flores indicated Bell was still under contract to the Jets, who were in the process of releasing him. That would preclude Flores from discussing any Dolphins interest."

More details in article linked above.

It almost sounds as if he’s interested...but as indicated above, that would be contrary to the team’s younger mindset

The fact is he sat out 2018 in a contract dispute. He hasn't done anything in the near year and a half since he has been back. Admittedly that is with an awful Gase led Jets team. But still, I don't see anything that leads me to believe he is approaching the guy he used to be.

He may still be but it's not worth it to bring him here with his baggage.

Mando's tweet contradicts what Adam Schefter has been reporting:

Now, the Jets could have contacted the Dolphins and we said no thank you and that's the extent of our talks about trading for Bell, but if we're serious about trading for him and decided the money was too much, it would reason we would still be interested with the money being practically nil on our side if we were to sign him.

I can see both sides here- great RB that would have an immediate impact, but poor attitude that's seen him bounce around in recent years. I would personally pass on him but wouldn't hate it if we signed him to be a rotational player either.

That's the thing though- he'd come in as a backup to Gaskin. Don't try to fix what isn't broken; if he's happy with that role to start then so be it. If not, don't let the door hit you on the way out!

This is a bad take by Barry Jackson, everyone knows there is risk with signing veterans, I'm sure there are many cases of us signing aging vets that worked out well for us.

The one this would remind me of is Cris Carter in 2002. The team started the season 5-1 and was coming off a great, hard-fought victory in Denver in a Sunday night game they were expected to lose. Oronde Gadsden was hurt in the game, and Dave Wannstedt panicked and pulled Carter out of retirement to replace him. Carter immediately jockeyed for a leadership position in the locker room and disrupted what the team had achieved in that regard. The team went 4-6 the rest of the season and finished 9-7.

Now, this team is nowhere near as good as that one, but what Bell could do to the locker room culture on a team that's rapidly developing in that direction is analogous in my opinion.

I would forecast the Chiefs here, with the Dolphins' being used by Bell's agent for salary leverage, given their cap situation. Any free agent in this scenario would be wise to include the Dolphins if they're interested.

This really is an odd one because I really do not feel like I know who Bell is today.

Was his holdout in Pitt stupid? Yes
Is he difficult to get along with? Probably
Is Adam Gase the worst coach in the league to be with if you are hard to get along with? Yes
Is he really as bad as looked in NY? Probably not
Is he as good as he was in Pitt? Probably not
Does he have a skillset that would fit perfectly within our scheme? Definitely

I have never seen a situation quite like this. An organization pays top dollar to bring in a back, and the head coach openly states that he doesn't want him from day one. To then watch that coach, who could conceivably get fired any week, oust the player from the team while still having to pay him, is startling.

In my mind, if the money is right, we can go ahead and make this move. I would in no way consider giving him a massive deal. In fact, I would love, love, love to give him a 1 year deal with a club option for a second.

I think he is clearly better than anyone on our team, and I think Howard's time in Miami may end before it ever really began.

Gaskin has been great but really they would be 1A and 1B as opposed to starter and backup.

Not really any downside to rotating backs if both are performing.

Like I said, I'd do a one year prove it deal and let someone else sign him to a big contract. If he wont take that I'd pass.

Sure, or Bell could end up being the clear starter by years-end. My only point is that he shouldn't be promised anything on day one- he needs to come in and work before he's going to see the game reps. As long as he understands that and agrees, then I'm all for signing him.

This is a really strange situation though because he was flat-out abused by Gase in NY. I get the feeling that once you're on his "bad list", he goes out of his way to make you miserable to make it easier to get you off the team. We saw the same with Ajayi, for example, and in that case it was probably the right move at the time. But he hated Bell before he had even walked in the door- I'd love to hear the backstory about that someday since there's clearly something.

When a player tells the coach he should be played more, its time for the team to get rid of that player.

It really looks like we're in the sweepstakes here, and if anyone is going to overpay for Bell's services... it's going to be us.

We've got the cap space, so the temptation is to use it.

We can't compete with the Chiefs. At all. We can, however, offer him more money, no income tax, sunny weather close to home, etc. Basically, lots of the reasons you don't want to someone to choose.

Let's face it, if you turn down the chance to play for a superbowl contender because you want to be closer to home and in the warmth then does that team even want you? It doesn't scream great work ethic.

If we land him it had better be cheap or else it had better be an incredibly productive move...

God knows our running game needs help. We need a premier back that can rush 25 times for 100 yards per game. The one thing I liked about Bell circa 2017 in Pittsburgh, the man didn't try and hit a hole right away...a slight pause, waiting for the hole to open and he would HIT it...but is this LeVeon Bell the same Bell that we saw in Pittsburgh? Was his problem Adam Gase? Was his problem attitude?

I get nervous every time we entertain GREAT running backs...from yesterday. If we do this, I'm not saying it's bad and I'm not saying it's good. I just don't know which Bell we would get.

I think part of our issue has been RB by committee. Obviously they've needed to try different players and see who's who, but so far it seems clear - Gaskin and Breida are superior to Howard. I'd give them more snaps. Of course, they're both faster, finesse runners. So maybe we only need one and a backup and then a bruiser.

If Bell doesn't work out we've immediately got dead weight at the RB spot.

Well the thing is, and I know some of the others around here will disagree with me but, you don't quarterback by committee and you shouldn't running back by committee either. There's nothing wrong with having other backs you send in on situational plays but unless we have a premier running back, that can rush the ball 25 times a game for 100 yards, we'll only go so far.

I just want to see the look on Gases face if we sign Bell and he runs for over 100 yards and scores 2 touchdowns against them!
