https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article246892187.html "Dynamic receiver Antonio Callaway has served the last of his long drug-related suspension and is eligible to practice with the Dolphins for the first time on Wednesday. Callaway, the 23-year-old burner originally from Miami Booker T. Washington High, will start off on the Dolphins’ practice squad, but if he’s in football shape and knows the offense, there’s no reason the Dolphins can’t activate him quickly and get him on the field. He should be familiar with Chan Gailey’s playbook. The league allowed him to attend meetings during his suspension, which has spanned two years and two teams. Callaway was a great talent at the University of Florida, but multiple off-field red flags caused him to fall to the fourth round of the 2018 Draft. The Browns took a shot on him, but Callaway didn’t last two seasons before Cleveland had seen enough. Yet when he’s on the field, he’s electric. Callaway, who ran a 4.4-second 40 during the pre-draft process, caught 43 passes for 586 yards and five touchdowns for Cleveland in 2018. The Dolphins probably would prefer seeing him on the practice field at least once before the trade deadline passes, but they don’t have that luxury." More on Callaway and other WR's in the article linked above.
I'd take him back if for no other reason than to push Williams. In my opinion he plays very small and doesnt justify his easy drops by making any significant plays unlike a guy like Chambers did. I'd even consider giving Ford a start across from Parker just to send a message. Nothing I dislike more than a giant who plays small.
I'm hoping he doesn't play for the team. Lots of issues off the field, including an alleged sexual assault that his college seems to have made go away. He also was extremely lazy and late with the Browns, leading to them cutting him. He's basically the WR version of RB Mark Walton from last year.
If he does those things he gets cut. I dont know about the details regarding the sexual assault but that's definitely the most concerning bit.
Well, he's here and he's on the practice squad after a long suspension, so that tells me that he's probably not in the immediate plans to be part of the 53-man roster. He's cheap depth, plain and simple....and he will have to earn getting another chance to dress for a game. If he has a poor attitude, no problem, we'll just send him packing. If he works hard and proves himself, great, it's a big win for us getting a quality player on the cheap. That's what is so great about a "show me" contract.
Sometimes a team with a strong culture can make it work. Our team is young but you can just see the energy they bring. I’m excited to see what this team could do with more playmakers. Can’t have those drops, the one almost resulted in a interception.
Also in my opinion he didnt have to fall on that slant route early from Tua, I believe that was him? If not I take back putting it on him. It was a bit low and outside but he could have extended his arms rather than doing what he did. If he catches that on the move he gets another 5-10 yards minimum and possibly breaks one if he can beat the help up the field. Maybe I need to see the throw again though and I'm being too harsh.
The routes that the coaches are having the WRs are often bizarre. Its like we're back under Adam Gase the last few weeks. BTW, Golladay is one of my favorite WRs in the league also. I would love to have him on the Fins.
The thing is that while it's a number that needs improvement, Parker and Williams arent separation WR. They are guys who can get downfield in a hurry and in theory create a bigger throwing window with their size. Unfortunately while Parker has become pretty damn good at that, Preston plays very small in my opinion.
They don't need to be used downfield, though. We know that Parker can excel when used in comebacks and outs. He's done great on those routes with Tannehill, Cutler and Fitz. And it seems logical that Williams is capable of doing the same thing. And I would think that Gesicki is as well. But we don't seem to run those plays very often at all, for whatever reason. And its not like Chan Gailey doesn't have that it in his system, either. We could run basically the same offense that he had with the 2015 Jets, featuring Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, and have it be highly effective, but we aren't. And I don't get it.
He looks like a shadow of the player that he used to be. We also don't have a 4th, 5th or 7th round pick to trade.
Oh I'm not saying they need to go deep, I just mean they have straight line speed where their routes develop quickly rather than being shifty route runners. My use of the word downfield was off and confusing.
We traded away our 7th rounder in 2022 already. I'd rather not completely deplete ourselves for over the hill veterans in a year where the Fins aren't a top contender anyways.
We'll disagree on that. I think that making the playoffs as a wild card team and getting your doors blown off does nothing to build a franchise. We've seen that movie before.
Eh I'll disagree on two fronts. Late round picks are almost valueless. If I can move one for a known commodity on a fair contract I'm doing it every time. Second, if our defense plays like its ranked the rest of the year we have a chance to win any game.
I don't think that our defense is anywhere near as good as the points its allowed though, and its going to catch up with us sooner or later.
To a degree I agree, but against the Jags, Jets and Rams they were that good. We looked pretty bad early but without preseason and a weird year I dont know what that means yet.
No respect of our run game is what that tells me, but that's also not who they are as players as someone else pointed out. They're 50/50 basketball guys, even though Williams was a good route runner coming out of college. We need to get some underneath stuff working, and we need some run-after-catch receivers to make that even more effective. Hopefully, one of Callaway, Bowden, or Perry can help with that, though Callaway seems more like a boundary guy to me.
I think it depends if you made it by fluke or if it was a progressive step forward for your team. The other years we made it felt flukey.
The last three times that we made the playoffs, we got destroyed in the first round. The three times that we made it before that, we won a wild card game basically at the last second. Then got destroyed in the Div round. The last time that we had a solid win in the WC round was 1994, which I also consider to be the last time that we had a really good team. That's what I want to get back to. Anything less than that is just a step on the ladder. I don't want to be excited. I want to feel, very solidly, that our team belongs at least in the Div round going into the year, and then makes that happen.
That would be great, but any time you make the playoffs it's a positive. Look at the NBA this year, not a single Miami Heat fan thought we were a finals team. You have to make it in to get there and I'd be happy to get there. Especially if we are starting Tua and he looks good, playoff experience on the road would be huge going into year two.
I'm so used to any Dolphins playoff loss being a blowout, that I can't really wrap my brain around anything else.
I agree with Alex- it's better to lose in the 1st round than not get there at all. It's playoff experience and it sets the tone for the next season. With that said though, I think our defense is actually better than that 18 points per game indicates and they're improving every single week. The pressure we're creating by having 2 shutdown corners changes everything the other 9 players can do...by week 17 I think we'll be seen as a truly elite defense. Now, let's say Tua catches up to where Fitz was 3 or 4 weeks ago. With that defense AND an offense dropping 30+ a game, we're going to be surprising some people in the playoffs. Maybe we don't go past a round or two but that's not the point...it's stepping stones towards dominating those games in the coming years.
I agree. With the team how it is, the playoffs is a major accomplishment. They are not going to lose anyone of importance next season due to contract coming up, so I see it as a huge stepping stone.
I personally think that the defense is far worse than their points allowed suggests, its eventually going to blow up in their face. I dont see what they're doing as sustainable.
