T We are having this discussion in the Club level where The wicked smart poster called Disgustipate posted this graph about double teams and run stopping, he believes the backers are at fault for the run game issues..
Because if this guy and Tua pan out, in addition to the picks that already have, you’re looking at a stellar draft that can really propel this team into Super Bowl contention in the near future. The pass defense is already the best in the league. If you couple that with a very good pass offense, you’re easily talking about one of the best teams in the league.
I was not a fan of the Davis pick I thought for a 2nd rounder I wouldn’t get my money’s worth. I thought he would be able to stand his ground and makes some tackles in his Close immediate space surrounding him but I I didn’t see the quick explosive qualities to be a defensive playmaker who makes plays behind the LOS and plays rushing the passer. Are you saying he’s been worth the pick?
I think the videos in the thread in the original post suggest that he’s developing toward playing the way you’d want him to at that position, where he’s very disruptive.
Now I absolutely agree.. Real big fan Tua, Absoutely loved the Austin Jackson pick, think Noah is gonna be a stud if they put him at nickel, There wasn’t a bigger fan than me of Kindley, really likes the value of Brandon Jones, lobbied for Lynn Bowden, can’t believe we got Perry in the 7tb.. Could be our 2nd or even 1st best draft, first being Marino draft. The only two picks I would of went in a different direction was Davis and Hunt.. Hunt looks like he may prove me wrong which is freakin awesome and I hope Davis does the same.. I haven’t isolated either of them yet.. is there any reps out there breaking them down?
I saw them now.. He does look nice in those plays.. Man could you imagine hitting on all these freakin players
3 starting OL Franchise QB Solid safety Potential all pro DL 21 year old CB with massive upside 10+ year long snapper Move aside JJ, a new sheriff is in town with potentially one of the best draft classes ever.
When you consider our ammunition next year you're almost tempted to trade the Dolphins 1st rounder for another bounty the following years.
I would definitely consider that as a function of who's on the board when those picks come along. If it's just the right piece and it's there, I take it and plug it in because this team is very close if Tua pans out.
Davis isn't "ready" quite yet, but if you sit there and watch him I think it's clear that he's got what they were looking for in him physically. When he's lined up over a Center he's just clearly too much- too strong, too long-armed, too athletic and has reps every week where he kind of makes them look dumb. I think there's a question of weight with him. They've got him at 330 now on the website, but the guy I think they're trying to emulate with him is Alan Branch, who was in the 350's with the Patriots. I imagine they're going to evaluate what he's doing this year(and he looks pretty good at least as a one-gap penetrator, and despite his lack of a rush plan he's better than a of 2-gap specialists rushing), but it's quite possible he might just be huge soon enough.
Notice where Christian Wilkins’ name appears on that chart. It looks like we have a pair of solid run stuffers in the middle of the line, with Raekwon demanding more double teams and Wilkins cleaning up.
If that's true then by extension we have perhaps one of the worst linebacking corps in the league, because the run defense is horrid.
I think it's fair to point at the linebackers as the issue with the run defense. You're running a lot of formations with just the single MLB in the stack behind the LOS and both of the OLBs playing on the line- and the guys playing MLB have been pretty awful. They don't have the instincts, and they're getting blocked a lot even in situations where they've really got limited numbers of pretty predictable second level defenders to avoid and they're too undersized to shed. On the other hand there's something to be said for these smaller linebackers and what they're doing in the blitz packages, though- especially Baker and KGH. It's sort of a novel spin- these undersized linebackers can do stuff in coverage your normal 25+ pound heavier Belichick linebacker can't, and their acceleration on blitzes has been brutal on quarterbacks.
Well and as it turns out, run defense isn't all that important anyway. If there's one of the four prominent aspects of the game (pass offense, pass defense, run offense, run defense) you want to be weak in if you have to choose one, it's run defense. If the team is in essence exchanging some degree of run defense for effectiveness in blitzing the QB, I'll take it.
