This video is the epitome of what I say about everyone who screams quarterback quarterback quarterback. The Miami Dolphins has the BEST quarterback to ever play the game, put up earth shattering numbers for completions, yards and points...and STILL lost.

You must have a balanced offensive attack and a juggernaut defense. You have to be able to run the ball. You have to be able to pass the ball and you have to be able to shut your opponent down in the run and pass.

If you can’t do all 3 of these, instead of playing in the playoffs and contending for a Super Bowl, you’ll be watching those games at home.

You don't need to do all 3 to win the SB. It's true that defense and offense are similarly important — offense has statistically been slightly more important (about 3% on average) in the SB era — but as time has passed it's become less and less important to have a good running game and to stop the run. Look no further than last year's SB champion Chiefs.

The Chiefs had the #5 ranked offense by points scored and the #7 ranked defense by points allowed. They were also ranked #5 by offensive passer rating and #5 by passer rating allowed. But in the run game? Not so good. They were ranked #20 in rushing Y/A and #29 in defensive rushing Y/A, and were below average in rush percentage which is really amazing because most of the difference in rush% comes from running out the clock in the 4th quarter.

So nowadays you need a good passing game and a good pass defense, but running the ball isn't anywhere as important as it used to be. Rush percentage for the league as a whole, including SB winners, has been steadily falling since 1978.

I think that if you can be excellent in one area, and then good enough units in the others, you can win. But you also need to have health, luck and timing. And the Dolphins haven't ever had that on their side since 1985.

The Fins teams of 1990-1995 were absolutely good enough to reach a Super Bowl. And in several of those years, I would argue that the team that started Week 1 was good enough to win one. But one of the ingredients that makes a Super Bowl run a lot easier is a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and to do that, you need to usually be the class of your own division. And of course the Dolphins problem that this very good period in their history also aligned exactly with the best period in the history of their division rival the Buffalo Bills. For every season during the first half of the 90s, the Fins went into the season as one of the three or four best teams in the AFC. But so did Buffalo, and so the Fins couldn't win enough games to earn that bye except for 1992, when they crushed the Chargers in the AFC title game, which they hosted and lost to....Buffalo.

Had the early 90s Bills not been the absolute juggernaut dynasty that they were, Marino's Dolphins could have likely made several Super Bowls during that time. But it was a cruel twist of timing.

Bad to averages defenses, no elite level running backs ever, and no elite wide receivers

I agree but also the game has changed, if Marino were playing now or in his prime from 2000 to whenever, in my opinion hed have multiple rings regardless of his team.

You are right. The NFL has to try and re-create Marino, not in unprecedented talent but by seriously altering the rules to favor the offensive passing game. That’s why every one of these quarterbacks with NFL records today, I have a mental asterisk next to it. Every one of these receivers that hold a record, I have a mental asterisk next to it. Had THESE rules been in place during the Marino era, Dan Marino would have near 700 career touchdowns, a single season TD record of 75 TDs, 90,000 career yards passing and at least 4 Super Bowl rings.

I don’t care what anyone says nor what numbers, stats, or any other argument they present, Daniel Constantine Marino was the GREATEST quarterback to EVER play the game.

But even with that being the case, they still couldn’t get by the Buffalo Bills...with their potent offense, BALANCED between Jim Kelly’s play, star receiver in André Reed...their powerful running game with Thurman Thomas, and a STOUT defense led by Bruce Smith. The Bills were a better TEAM than the Dolphins.

And I submit this, THOSE Buffalo Bills would destroy any AFC team today...and win all 4 of the Super Bowl appearances. There’s nothing anyone can say to change my mind about it.

Oh I agree 100% that team is very very important. I just think Marino is one of those QB that in the modern NFL would be dominant enough to transform any average to slightly below average team into a contender every year, much like how a Tom Brady or Peyton Manning took what were "decent" rosters and turned them into perennial contenders for a Superbowl. When I say decent rosters, I mean if you were just looking at the NE roster minus Brady (and cheating...) youd never go WOW THAT TEAM HAS A GREAT ROSTER.

Obviously no QB can do it entirely alone, but with the salary cap (which only existed from 1994 on and wasnt quite as balancing as it is now) and new rules that make life easier for a QB I just think Marino would win one if not more.

Also agreed, those Bill's teams were stacked. I'm going to make an admission you guys might prosecute me for....I dont hate the Bills, especially not how I hate the Jets or Pats. I actually respect their history and organization and if I needed to choose an AFC East team other than us to be a good team, I'd choose them.

That isnt to say I want them to win. I want US to win, but if it isnt us I'd rather it be them than NE or NYJ.

For all the reasons listed above, and because Denver drafted Terrell Davis and Miami didn’t.

This, bad luck and injuries had a lot to do with it. The 93 team was a sure SB winner in my opinion if Marino doesn't tear his aquilles. I guess #13 really was unlucky after all.

I totally agree. The 1994 team is the best one since I've been a big fan, but 93 had the potential to be even better. I mean, after starting 3-1 with Marino, they still were 9-2 after his injury, before Mitchell, Offerdahl, Higgs and others also got injured. The team only had Marino for 4+ games, and still finished #2 in the NFL in offense!

With typical health, that team probably wins at least 12 games, has the best record in the entire NFL (The Cowboys were the only team in the NFC to win more than 10 games, going 12-4), and then would get to play two playoff games at home vs some combination of Buffalo, Houston and KC.
