You do what the Seahawks did before they found Russell Wilson: you keep spending resources on the position until you find the guy. So yes, draft a QB at some point in the draft.

I say draft high. Worst case scenario, neither guy is good. Best case, you have Rivers/Brees scenario.

Some of the talking heads media is making a case for Justin Fields #1 overall since he outplayed Lawrence in the playoff game. If the Jets don't take a QB at #2, that means Lawrence could potentially fall in our laps at #3 and I think you'd have to take him. Very tough to pass on Fields as well if the picks are reversed....so we should have good draft collateral if we want to trade back.

However, nobody has multiple 1st rounders besides the Jets...so we are not loading up this season anyway.

You mean like how giving QB Jay Fiedler a WR in Chris Chambers and a RB in Ricky Willams got Miami to the playoffs? Oh, wait....

My point? Without a good QB, the rest of your offensive talent (and a good defense) is wasted. The QB will drag down the rest of the team and you are a borderline playoff team AT BEST each year.

Find your franchise QB, THEN add the pieces around him. That might be Tua with another year of development, but that looks like a long-shot at this point. So grab another top QB prospect in 2021 and significantly increase your odds of getting that franchise QB.

Also, we have enough picks that we can add a top TE/WR and RB, ALONG with a QB at #3 in the first two rounds.

I think the fact that Urban Myer is rumored to become their head coach is what is causing this.

Team has plenty of needs still and its not like they have the option of Lawrence where you could trade Tua because you feel that much confidence in Lawrence. We need to remember also that they trade a 2nd round pick for Rosen the year before and while obviously Rosen isn't any good he was setup to fail and I have no idea why they got him.

You can't do that and then not give Tua a real chance which means maximizing the talent around him and giving him a full offseason/preseason and hopefully with a much better offensive coordinator.

Between Tannehill and Tua, who have we taken? I'll agree Henne was a bust, so was that wildcat kid we brought in but they were both pre-Tanne. Personally I think it is too early to pull the plug on Tua, and I don't blame Tannehill for playing poorly in a system that didn't support his strengths i.e. TEN. I think the strategy of drafting a qb you like high or at least 1st rd makes sense, but I don't think you throw him a way after one year. I could be wrong though I'm just a fan.

Tua could be surrounded by the best skill players in the league and would still struggle.

It was still to bring competition, and when Mariota couldn't live up to it, Tannehill stepped in and was ready to go. Another rookie is unlikely to play at that level.

Bringing in a first round QB isn't done for competition, it's a replacement. Which, if the FO wants to go in that direction, OK. But you don't take two QBs and let them just duke it out.

I didn't say we'd taken a lot of bad QBs in the draft, I said we'd passed up drafting QBs because we thought we had the answer, whether that answer was Jay Fiedler, for whom we passed on drafting Drew Brees, Chad Henne, or Daunte Culpepper.

Fielder sucked and was quite limited as a QB, incomparable. Also, Chambers was just alright.

I agree you always look, but unless the guy you are talking is substantially better than Tua. Why not give him one full year and if he doesn't show what you want then start over. Tua looked great in college, just like every other highly touted 1st rd qb from a major program. Most rookies don't light it up their first year a la Mahomes. He is the exception to the rule.

To answer your question from another post. The thing I liked about Tua this year was his demeanor and poise. The game doesn't seem to big and he seems to be enjoying himself. I think he fits the mold off this team, and if he works hard in the off-season we could see a jump in his performance just like Buffalo did with Allen and countless other teams. Or he could continue to struggle and will be drafting high next year as well.

Chambers was a very good WR. And Tua and Fiedler look very similar except Jay would take more chances than Tua has so far.

Fiedler had flashes of being good, he was just incredibly inconsistent. Very much like Tua.

Chambers wasnt anything special, and Tua is a substantially better prospect than Fiedler ever was. Trying to lump them together is absurd.

Dave's plan was also to NOT emphasize the QB and run the ball and play defense, which is why he kept Fiedler instead of gunning for a better QB.

This is only true if you compare the totality of Jay's career to Tuas lone rookie season.

As QB prospects and general ability, Jay isn't even in the ballpark. Very limited player. He had guts and heart not unlike Fitz, but he wasn't a very good passer.

Fiedler played way more than 10 games. Plus he couldn't throw a quick out. Fielder was a very bad quarterback. I had no idea why people thought he looked good.

Right, but my point is we organizationally failed Tannehill who at this point has shown he can play in the right system. Just for clarification, I think we gave Tannehill to much time ( 7 years is a bit much.). We had talent, but tried to put a square peg in a round hole. This happened twice, especially with Gase letting him throw it around the field like he was the second coming.

I just don't think you replace a rookie after one rookie like season. Seems very clevelandesque to me.

Even with Sewell the Phins would need more help on the interior line, especially at center. #3 could be in demand and OL help will be available at #18 and #36. Two trade downs depending on who is taken at #2, I could see, Cincinnati and Carolina. A fun off-season begins...

I get it to a degree, we wanted Tua to come in and not look like a rookie. I know I did.

But I think the hyperbole train is running overtime based on the emotion of a bad loss in a big game.

We are still one offseason (which didn't really exist thanks to Covid) from being one the least talented teams in history.

We need firepower and play makers and game changers at many spots on both sides and a real offseason to coach and gel with so many young players.

We do need to can Gaily though, not impressed at all.

That's going to be a real test for Flores. Does he have too much loyalty to coaches working with him? That was one of Shula's problems (Olivadotti). Hard to can coaches when they're people you're probably friends with, but yeah Gailey needs to go. At least it looks like Flores has a no-nonsense attitude with the players.

Also on this Tua subject and comparison with Burrow and Herbert. I think it's irresponsible to forget that Tua was started with a winning record and expected to keep it there and continue success. (Not that he did) Burrow and Herbert got the nod on teams who looked to be out of any playoff hopes pretty early. Easier to Chuck it up in my opinion, when the team is less worried if you lose them the game.

I thought there were better uses of that pick too, but really he's a guy that we won't see the fruits for a bit. The type of guy who suddenly pops after 2 or 3 years of coaching, work and film to refine the raw talent.

I wouldn't be shocked either way if he busts out or turns into an all star lol.

If he wants to continue the team first mentally, he has to can Gailey. I personally think he was only brought in to work with fitz early in the season. They apparently have rapport.

To be fair, he canned O'Shea pretty quick. Gaily as a long time veteran is a different beast though. But I didn't see him or his game plans doing Tua any favors. Plus, he always felt like an emergency option, a filler.

I have no idea who I would go after, but someone who would be friendly to Tuas strengths and with a positive QB development track record.

Hiring of Chan Gailey was terrible. If he doesn't get fired that's 2 strikes against Flores.

Herbert came in the second game and they have a talented offense and defense.

No, the argument here is about what takes priority: Getting your QB OR building the rest of the team instead.

I'm not saying we get rid of Tua based on just his rookie season, I'm saying he DID NOT show enough in year one to keep Miami from passing over another potential franchise QB when they have a pick that high (so no extra cost to trade up for another QB).

One other point: I keep putting Rosen out of my mind, but Grier wasted a second rounder on a QB that had a season of NFL tape. He didn't evaluate him properly and decided he was worth a significant draft investment. That, and the struggles we are seeing with Tua have me very concerned that Grier does not know how to pick a QB. Which is a good argument for NOT letting him draft another QB at #3, but I think there are three valid franchise QB prospects and I trust the Jets to mess up and pick the lesser QB at #2.
