Plenty of threads going around about our QB situation, thought it would be fun to talk about something else that wasn't up to par this year. While it was better than last year, we still had major struggles consistently running the ball and protecting the QB.

I looked at PFF as a guide to get a sense of where our guys are at:
    Karras- 17
    Kindley- 75
    Flowers- 31
    Hunt- 53
    Jackson- 78
    Davis-58

I know that PFF isn't the be all/end all but pretty lousy across the board. The only player who ranked in the upper half of their position group is Flowers. Two players(both rookies) didn't even rank in the top 64 which would account for starter level play at G/T. Jackson had the worst grade but is very young and it was well documented that he needed to develop his strength to compete in the NFL.

The first question is, with this OL being so young, do you think they can develop into a good OL?

Second, is if Sewell is there at #3(assuming Miami has no intentions of taking a QB :), do you take him or use one of our first 4 picks to bolster the OL?

A case could easily be made for or against Sewell, but I would personally pass since we have bigger needs and likely a very good opportunity to trade back & grab a truly game-changing receiver. I think the line is coming along nicely for a young squad that was not projected starters for 2020. With that said, I would add 1-2 more linemen in the mid rounds to keep beefing up our talent.

I have advocated for and pleaded for years to get some real offensive line help and to invest resources there. If the line is garbage the rest of the offense is garbage. What is funny is on those PFF rankings it's odd that Flowers graded out the highest because it seems to me that he was the weakest link of the bunch. The line was clearly better running the ball when he went out and Kindley took over at left guard.

To your question starting 3 rookies on the offensive line is rough, I know most of the season it was just two. Starting 3 rookies on the offensive line WITHOUT having a proper off season program, S&C work and even training camp is exponentially harder. Let these guys get through a complete off season and conditioning program and next year the same group is going to be markedly better.

As for Sewell we don't need him. This group was already far superior to the year before and several years before that, the unicorn line doesn't count because they hardly played together - hence Unicorn's. We have far more pressing needs at WR and RB that need to be addressed.

They don't have to be great, they just need to be good.

Yeah, all we can hope for is someone wants to jump ahead of Atlanta to grab a QB and we can trade back. Hell, even if we slid back 4-5 spots and could add a 2nd and a 3rd rounder, I’d do that. You'd still have most of the top receivers available.

I almost wish Grier hadn’t cemented Tua as our starter just so GM’s could speculate about where we’re going with that pick. The downside to that is if it hurt his confidence.

I thought the OLine looked very good at times, but it obviously struggled on other occasions. Denver being a case in point.

I believe it’s worth persevering with the rookies. Yes, they are young and raw, but they are big guys and seem to have the talent to perform at a very high level.

I love Kindley's attitude. Hopefully he can improve next year.

I think all of those rookies are going to look much better with a real offseason under their belt. That's why I don't want to draft Sewell unless we hit the jackpot in FA on a receiver or two.

And I don't want FA receivers unless they're like the Stills situation and still on a rookie contract when we bring them in. I am very tired of overpaying for "veteran" receivers with diva complexes that don't produce.

I'd much rather draft our core WR's even if it means going the "Preston Williams" route and waiting a few years for them to fully develop. But with our current draft capital, I have a feeling that won't be an issue this season.

I always take individual lineman grades with a bit of a grain of salt. The oline, more than any other position in football, plays as a unit as opposed to a collection of individuals, and a key component of that is the amount of time they have played together. All the great lines in history had one thing in common - continuity. (Washington’s Hogs, Dallas in the 90s, etc.) Yes, there were all-pros on those lines, but they played a lot of games together and dominated as a unit, not as individuals.

PS. mlb, when has a GM ever told the truth in the offseason, lol?

IMO PFF grades are just for entertainment values and especially useless when it comes to the offensive line. I watched Kindley play very well in a game and see them give him a very low grade.

Saying that the offensive line was obviously a problem. IMO most of their problems were working together. Stunts and the like. Then hitting the rookie wall.

Kindley looks to be a really good player in the making, Austin Jackson needs to improve but showed some promise, Hunt is a really good run blocker and needs to improve his pass block.

I hope they all take a big step.
