OFFENSE: The Dolphins started slow and finished with a chance to win the game in the final seconds. They just didn't get it done. There were two things that really hurt this team Sunday. They couldn't run the ball and their receivers couldn't get open. The running game, they might be able to fix. But this team needs to find a free agent that can help now and scout every college receiver with a pulse to find ones that can help in the future. Because that unit needs a serious upgrade. GRADE: C To see the rest go here! Can't say I disagree much with the grading. Dolphins week 1 report card | news-press.com | The News-Press
Thanks, I agree with everything in that article. Our run defense wasn't very good, our wide recievers never got open, our special teams were bad except for one return by Bess. I really thought Ginn would show something this game, and he just showed how he won't catch a punt in traffic or get open when it matters.
This game was decided by 2 or 3 plays that didn't go our way: 1. The Favre Hail Mary....how do you give up a TD on a 4th and 13 from the 20 yard line? This throw was just as disgusting as Ken Stabler's hail mary through the Sea of Hands that ended our dynasty in the 1974 playoffs. Don't the d-backs ever look towards the line of scrimmage to follow what the QB is doing? 2. The No Call when the clock hit ZERO....The Jets didn't get called for a delay of game on a crucial play....I believe it was in the 3rd quarter, and scored right after this. I am not saying the refs sucked, but we got shafted more than once. The pass interference call against us on a big third down play was also bogus. 3. What was Ginn doing on the final play? If you are going to commit offensive pass interference, don't allow the d-back to make a one handed catch to end the game. Ginn should have mugged him .....kick him in the nads if necessary but don't give up the INT. We never win the close games...if this was New England the ball would have hit a defenders helmet and a couple of Jet's players and then dropped into Moss' hands for the winning TD. We never have any luck.
I could be mistaken, but even if he mugged him and he didn't catch the ball. With the penalty does not 10 seconds come off the clock also?
I didn't see anything in the official rules I looked at about counting off any time. I think we just would have had the ball moved back ten yards, so we would have had one last play from around the 30 yard line with five seconds left. NFL Rules Digest: Pass Interference Digest of Rules Main Pass Interference There shall be no interference with a forward pass thrown from behind the line. The restriction for the passing team starts with the snap. The restriction on the defensive team starts when the ball leaves the passer’s hand. Both restrictions end when the ball is touched by anyone. The penalty for defensive pass interference is an automatic first down at the spot of the foul. If interference is in the end zone, it is first down for the offense on the defense’s 1-yard line. If previous spot was inside the defense’s 1-yard line, penalty is half the distance to the goal line. The penalty for offensive pass interference is 10 yards from the previous spot.
End of the day, its an almost completley new roster, it was an ugly game for the most part, many players didn't find the success we all had hoped, but even though the jets won the game, I would be more concerned as a Jets fan. A whole new dolphins team with several rookies playing their first NFL game and they almost lost it on a makeable last play of the game is not what I would imagine how they forseen the game playing out. Fact is we were a 1-15 team last year. The fact we lost so close without an effective run game or any recievers who are legitimate proven #1 and #2 shows me this team did take a good first step. Our rookies will get better each week and if we came this close to a team that loaded up with big contract FA in the offseason in the likes of Faneca, Pace, Farve, Jenkins I believe we can hold our heads high for the coming weeks. If one of our areas that was not good had played the way that is expected from them we could have won that game, but they didn't. I don't expect our WR and RB will play like that all season. They come to play and we will get wins. But just dont' expect wins every week. We lost but we have showed improvement in areas (QB specifically) that we never saw in a long time. I would be more worried if I was a Jets fan, to almost lose to a 1-15 team that blew up the roster and filled it in with rookies would be much more of a concern than a team that fought a weird game and kept battleing till the last second and just came up short. Its the NFL, success doesn't happen overnight.
I believe NJ is right. How did we almost win with no run game and no WR game. But some of these things we can hopefully clean up with time. It is the first game of a new admin. I'm willing to be patient. Now we can only go 15-1.
i thought the scores & stats were misleading. we were dreadful.... what happened to the team we watched in the preseason? the efficiency of the first-team in the beginning of preseason games? the running attack? that defensive front that lead the league in rushing yards allowed in the preseason? it was like i was watching a completely different team.
It was nice to see we had a qb throw 2 yes 2 TD's in one game. Thats promising considering he had no WR who came to play.
From MMQB by Peter King: "Is Miami sure Ted Ginn is better than Devone Bess? I'm not." Can't say I disagree. What a pathetic performance from Ginn. Its extremely frustrating, especially considering what a guy like Dwyane Bowe is doing with limited talent around him in KC. I thought Teddy was playing "fast" this offseason?
There's no doubt Ginn played poorley everywhere. I'm one who does not think he will continue to perform like that. Ginn will make his plays, when he does, they will be big, just don't expect them everyplay or everygame.
Dreadful is an overstatement I think at times they were flat out bad and there were other times they looked good. That is the mark of a young team. They gave up on the running way too soon and put the game on Pennington's shoulder and allowing the Jets pass rushers to pin their ears back and go for him. Motioning the running back out of the backfield didn't help Pennington or the offensive line either. The rushing defense was pathetic that we can agree on.
I think the C was just for fighting back and having a chance to win at the end. Most people thought the Jets would win easily. Given the way Miami played they really should have. NYers might have a reason to be concerned, I'll be watching the Jets/Pats game next Sunday on Sunday Ticket to see how they fare against NE, even without Brady. And I agree that the decision not to run at all after that 3rd and goal at the 2was terrible. Ronnie is almost a lock to get in with two attempts from that distance. What do they have to lose?
How about an Offense that wasn't game-planned against... There is the almighty preseason for you. Week1, still plenty of time though to correct ALL those problems.
that reminds me of when i was a kid... me: "Daddy, daddy, i got a B in reading!" dad: "That's a D you idiot!"
I can say that there is somebody I hate more than Peter Prickso now. That man without a doubt IS Peter King Why is there subliminal messages in both their names? Coeenkeedink? I think NOT. That being said, he may well be correct. Sorry but Ginn was absolutely DREADFULL yesterday, in every single aspect of the game. He did catch the one critical catch in the 4th quarter (Was that 4th down?), but besides that he was dismal
how do you hate peter king? as aloof and goofy as he is sometimes, he tends to be in our corner. he seems to always be subliminally rooting for us in his columns... has for years. in this case, that line he gave in MMQB was pretty much dead-on accurate bro.
Even though Mr. Ginn was uber dissappointing yesterday, to equate one game as the barometer for not being sure is fool hardy. Ginn showed us last year and preseason he can be good. Just needs to be more consistent and work a little. But keep it up and he'll be in my doghouse next year! As of now, for 2008 Ginn is just as good as Braylon Edwards
Yeah it'll be interesting to see how things go week to week. I am looking forward to see how the adjustments made by the coaching staff will pay off. The staff seems to know what to fix and how to fix it. On a very high level, I think it's just a matter of cohesion, repetition and experience for this young squad. Another offseason or two wouldn't hurt either.
I saw the same thing from Ted Ginn yesterday that I saw from him last year, and that is he just isn't playing fast. He's hesitant out there and for me it's because of one main thing...he's thinking too much. And I'm gonna use the end around as an example. Watch it again, when he gets the ball in his hands, it seems like he's thinking too much about what to do and it's causing him to slow down...he just needs to let it rip and play harder. I'm not gonna make excuses for him...he's gotta turn it up, literally.
