There's chatter that Watson wants to be traded. It would be hilarious to trade Houston's own third overall pick back to them for Watson...
Watson would command a ransom of picks, not just the 3rd overall. Not even sure our 1st 4 picks would be sufficient. This guy is proven elite talent (without the uncertainty of the draft), producing at near the top of the list statistically on a really bad team with a really bad OL and defense. I actually wouldn't be against such a trade IF we have a serious plan to get weapons on offense. You certainly wouldn't need as many offensive weapons with Watson as you would with Tua. That probably means giving up lots of picks in future years more than in the current year. Interesting possibility to say the least (most likely not happening though lol).
Naw, there's no way in hell they get that much for him. If he does get traded, I would be willing to bet it's for no more than a first and a second. It's not that he's not a proven star, it's just that no team would be willing to give that much.
QB's are highly prized so you never know, especially since you can spread those picks out over multiple years. But the slew of picks you'd probably have to give up is realistic IMO. Here's one take:
Yeah it's a huge barrier. I doubt Houston would want to trade him regardless of Watson's feelings. But let's not forget that Washington gave up 3 1sts and a 2nd just to move up 4 spots in the draft to select RG3. Rams also gave up 2 1sts, 2 2nds and 2 3rds to move up to select Goff. Saints also traded their entire draft just to draft Ricky Williams. So it's not completely out of the realm of possibility.
The only team dumb enough to give up that much draft capital is Houston, and since they can't trade with themselves....
I don't know about 3 firsts and seconds, but there are some teams that will look to put together high price packages. Belichick has to be interested, and if Im the Vikings I am paying really close attention. The Steelers maybe too - they have the defense and do well finding productive skill players outside the first round - move right from Big Ben to Deshaun. The Texans would rightfully demand a huge haul, but as strapped as they are, if Watson REALLY wants out they would have to consider things.
Do you think Tua and their 2 picks back would be a fair offer on either side? Not that i want to get rid of Tua, just a hypothetical value assessment? Lose Watson but get a young potential star and your draft picks back. For us we get a superstar and still have our own picks to build around. We would never do it...but interesting concept
I think at minimum you'd have to offer Tua + their 2 picks + 1st next year. Tua's trade value is not that high IMO. I think you get at most one 1st for him. Would I do that trade? Yup, but Houston won't go for it. They'll (rightfully) demand more.
I think that could be the start of the convo...and they BETTER be having that convo... You don't get the chance at a franchise/borderline elite QB often...and by them even mentioning it in a tweet, you know it's on the table. I'd be OK with Tua + our first 4 picks, or some combo of 2 of our top 4 picks and a future 1 and 2, especially if they could work Cooks into the deal. I'm sure he'd like to play for Flo...who wouldn't (ya, borderline homer'ish, but the guy is quality). Ya its probably Madden level crap, but who knows... I bet they trade him. New GM, new HC, vets want out, ZERO picks in the till...sheeeeit. Time for the fresh-start rebuild!
Houston gets #3, #18, and their second rounder back. They get out from under a HUGE contract.... ....I looked it up and they are facing a $67 million cap hit for trading him in 2021. I think they can split that between 2021-2022, but even that is $33+million each year. Seems impossible, but if Watson REALLY wants out and the new GM/Coach want a complete rebuild? They get lots of cap space, some picks to work with, and can get a QB at #3 (maybe even with a choice between Fields and Wilson if the Jets grab Sewell) to start the rebuild. Miami can flip Tua for a late first or early second rounder (the Saints might be the best fit and I'd take their #29-32 pick gladly).
Should be interesting with the cap projected to shrink next year. There may be some cap casualties that can be picked up for the right price.
Because Zach Wilson and Justin Fields may be great in the pros, but they're still rookies. Watson is a proven commodity.
What if you made it another player, along with Tua, say an All Pro, like Xavien Howard, who would be worth picks himself? And then their 2nd round pick this year and a pick next year? Possible franchise young QB, All Pro CB, and a couple of picks. Not sure how the salaries work, but that might be something both sides could sell their fans.
Houston wouldn't do that IMO. From our point of view that looks great, especially since Flores seems to be producing a FAR better defense than defensive talent on paper suggests. But put yourself in Houston's situation. Why give up an elite franchise QB for Tua, Howard and a few picks? I can't imagine any decent GM would do that. Of course Houston has done some stupid things so who knows lol.
Washington needs to strongly consider trading for him while Young, Sweat, Mclaurin and Gibson are on their rookie contracts. They could trade Alex Smith, 3 1st rounders, and 2 2nd rounders for him
Houston might not have a choice. If he really wants out, then you have to ask...who do they want to start next season at QB? Fields, Tua or Sam Darnold? They may end up the aggressor in the trade and maybe it becomes a HUGE TRADE. Something like Watson and Watt for three firsts and a 2nd....I don't think that's out of the question at all. Heck, that's the same trade for Tunsil/Stills reversed. They have to move Watt though if they're going full rebuild, probably Tunsil too.
IMO a Watson trade makes little sense for a team lacking in overall talent like the Jets. I'd put us borderline - yeah Watson's a phenomenal talent, but we have nothing at WR or RB to offer, and a Watson trade would kneecap our draft picks and take up a large chunk of available cap. He makes a LOT of sense for a team like the Steelers or Colts who have a good defense, solid skill players, and ready to win NOW. The cost would be egregious, but if you get a SB out of it?
While I'd love to see Deshaun Watson in a Dolphins uniform I don't see it happening. If you're Houston you just can't trade a guy like him. Actually let me rephrase that, you can't trade a QB like him. You shouldn't under any circumstance as he's far too good at the most important position on the field to just trade him. That being said they're in a tough spot since he apparently wants out. If Houston was smart they'd be doing whatever they can to appease him right now and make this right rather than trying to trade him. As much as it would hurt to move him if you're Houston if they feel they have no choice then they can get a kings ransom for him thats for sure. I just dont see it happening, not for Watson being traded here, or anywhere for that matter. You can't let a QB that young and that talented be traded. Make him happy, restore the relationship and move on. If I'm Grier though and I don't have the faith Tua will become a player of Watson's caliber you're damn right I'm calling about a trade to at least see what the price is. I know we have alot of picks and I know Watson is good, and I know we have alot of holes to fill on offense but I'd still make the call to ask the price. Just can't give away everything as Watson won't be worth the price we have to pay when we still have no WR's or RB's that can change a game with him. All I ask is that if he does get traded, please don't let it be to New England.
NO NO NO do not want him. Not that hes a bad player but we already have a good idea of his ceiling. He was on better teams than Miami has talent wise and they still were mediocre. Ill ride another 2 years with TUA unless he comes dirt cheap and agrees to compete for the position.
Deshaun is a good QB but the price is too rich for my blood. Keep on building a great team and whether it’s Tua or the next guy, they’ll have the cast around them to become a contender.
I'd make a call. Worst thing that could happen is they say they are not interested or their demands are excessive. If that is the case, oh well.
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...haun-watson-would-consider-trade-to-dolphins/ Well Deshaun would seem to welcome the idea of coming here
Goal is to win the SB not just make the playoffs. I would welcome Watson but not if they get fleeced. Still have needs to be filled if they are going to compete for a title.
Major media outlets have been talking about a Dolphins link to Watson for a few days now, mainly because Grier/Flores and how they treat their players. This could actually build a little traction through the offseason.
Yes, but I think people forget that Watson has all the leverage. Houston can trade him and get some compensation, or he could potentially sit out and Houston is mega-screwed. Miami will lowball any offers because we don't need Watson....yet Houston desperately needs their #3 pick back. I think Houston's 1st and 2nd gets us Watson....or our 1st and Tua.
For a first and Tua you have to think about it, if you’re the Dolphins. Depends on high they are on Tua compared to the contract of Watson. I think I would do it if I was Grier, tough call though.
If Watson comes here, with this defense, we are immediately a perennial playoff team and just a few pieces on offense away from being a SB contender. As long as we don't give up key pieces on defense and only a few draft picks (+Tua) you absolutely make that trade. I'm skeptical any such trade will occur, but it would be redemption for not getting Brees long ago. I hope you guys realize how unbelievable it is that Watson ended up #2 in passer rating this year on a 4-12 team. Adjusted to 2020 ratings the expected (team) passer rating for a 4-12 team is just about 70. Watson ended with 112.4!!
With Watson and a top notch receiver and a decent running back, this team could make a run at the super bowl. The defense is good enough.
