Interesting time to be searching for an OC, with the top candidates interviewing for HC jobs. After those shoes all drop, most who are under contract will be going back to their current teams. We're going either get somebody who is not under contract or pluck up a tenured and well-regarded position coach.
I know people will cringe hearing this, but I wonder if Ross will extend an invitation to Adam Gase? I could see that happening.
First of all, I believe it's Flores and Grier are handling that. Second of all, as I said in another thread, no person in their right mind should trust Adam Gase to even have a Zoom meeting with their quarterback.
From what I've heard from other insiders over the years, Ross talks to a lot of people and makes "recommendations" on who he would hire. These aren't statements like, "Hire this guy or you're fired," but his opinion does carry some weight in the decision process. So if Ross says to give Gase an interview, then he'll have an interview....that's all I meant by that. Remember, Ross did want Gase to stay under Grier last year, so it's a legit possibility. I'm not saying that's what I want, but somehow Gase's reputation is still in tact across the league outside of about a million Jets fans. He'll be working somewhere in the league next year.....it's perplexing to me, honestly.
Not after Gase admitted doing a crappy job of developing Sam Darnold. The myth of the great QB whisperer was officially dead at that point.
There is 0% chance that we will interview or try to hire Gase. He likely will be an OC somewhere, but not here. You don't fire a guy as HC and then bring him back as OC later, that would be crazy. As for Pederson, no. I saw it pointed out that as soon as Frank Reich and John DeFillipo (sp) left, Wentz's development cratered and the offense went stagnant. I wouldn't trust that.
Pederson looks like the front runner for the Jets job... which is fitting they seem to collect rejects all the time... and yet they fire someone like Bowles and Rex who actually kept them relevant..
Brian Shottenheimer anyone? Seems he and Carroll had "philosophical differences" in scheme with Shotty running a more pass heavy offense in the first half of the season, and Carroll shifting to a more run heavy approach in the second half. Russell Wilson was on an MVP pace and the team was averaging over 34 PPG in the first half of the season, compared to 24 + PPG in the second half.
Yes please. Carroll wants to play Defense, run the ball keep it close and win the game in the 4th quarter. Shotty wants to light it up. Oil and water. Bring the water to the beach and sunny days are ahead!
I'm not sure there's so much a philosophical difference here as a difference in self-scouting on how the Seahawks offense works- Schottenheimer came around to "Let Russ cook" and Carroll didn't. Generally speaking Schottenheimer is a defensive head coaches kinda ball control guy.
One of the most glaring examples of how important OCs/position coaches are to a team, as well as the Pederson example. HC is king, but the other coaches are only slightly behind in importance IMO. Flo has shown he doesn't let his "coach picking ego" get in the way of trying to make the team better. Refreshing. How many years did we wish Shula would fire Olivadotti? Looks like he's gonna keep picking an OC until he gets the right one...hopefully its this year.
Not sure if I like any of those. I kind of want us to hire the Steelers' QB coach though, just so when things go wrong with the offense, we can all yell "blame Canada!" and play that song from the South Park movie.
I like Tony Elliott and Pep Hamilton getting interviews.... Tony is a future head coach and Pep did great last season with Herbert.. i rather go after Anthony Lynn but Pep deserves consideration as well. Tony and Pep are two high character coaches and players love them.
Pep was something of a disaster at Michigan running the offense ... but then again, it's been a disaster for awhile under Harbaugh. Not sure how much we can take away from that.
Just waiting for the surprise... "The Miami Dolphins have hired Norv Turner to be their Offensive Coordinator."
If we draft the next Ladanian Tomlinson im good with that.. na but i really want a balanced offense like the Browns got
Looks like the Steelers are expected to promote Matt Canada to offensive coordinator, so scratch him off the list.
Tony Elliot is reportedly staying at Clemson, and the 49ers are rumored to be making McDaniel their OC.
Hot rumor is that Brian Daboll has the Chargers job lined up and will accept after the Bills' season is over. Wonder if he will try to take his QB coach with, or if the Bill just promote or look outside their organization. EDIT: Chargers announcing they have hired Rams DC Brandon Staley as their new head coach. Interesting move, going with a defensive guy despite such a new QB. I wonder who he will seek out as Herbert's mentor - the Rams tree seems to have a lot of bright offensive minds. Also possible he keeps Pep and we strike another off the list. Wouldn't be disappointed though. Also, Dan Campbell rumored to have the Lions' job wrapped up in a similar situation. Wonder who he targets as well - he's not an Xs/Os dude himself and has very little playcalling experience, so he will be looking for someone who fits those bills. May come down to Hamilton (meh) and Studesville. I'm surprised we haven't taken a hard look at Lynn, though always possible he turned one down unofficially for whatever reason. Also possible we are waiting for a guy like Mike Kafka, especially if Bienemy stays puts.
Dan Campbell is going to be the head coach of the Lions... i remember 5 years ago many wanted the dolphins to promote him to HC. He finally got his shot.
What do you guys think is taking so long? Do you think we are waiting on someone who is currently in the playoffs? We announced what 6 candidates and interviewed them all but haven't made a move and most have taken other jobs now. It would seem either none of them felt like the right fit or we are waiting on someone. I keep seeing all these hires everyday and wondering who the heck is our next guy? Man i really hope we find someone good. Someone creative and can develop tua and these young players. Also good for Dan Campbell. Man i know our guys wanted to run through a wall for that guy. He doesn't seem like the brightest crayon but seems like a leader of men. Hopefully he finds some good coordinators to help him....after we find ours of course.
