Calculated Value chart and it looks Chris godwin would be about 17 mil per season.I think he would be a great addition for us and we could add either Sewel or trade back for Parsons instead of smith whom I am concerned about his size. What do you all think?
He's too similar to Parker. Miami needs a guy who can take it to the house any time he touches the ball.
I cannot remember the last time I was so laser focused on one free agent. Godwin would make this offseason spectacular. He's an amazing talent, and is still only 25 years old next season. There is no other player on the market that I would rather spend money on. Please do it, Dolphins!
loved Parker as a pick and been waiting and waiting but he just isn’t going to be consistent enough to be the man. I say we trade him while he has some value he will never play a full season IMHO. Trade and grab a young free agent stud and draft one as well!
Had you asked this question a few months ago, I would say that I love him, but recently, it feels like he has had a case of the dropsies. $17 mil per season is a a lot for a guy that I have concerns about.
I think that this is a situation where we need to be very, very careful. I agree. I think he is a great young talent, but the moment the ink drys on a $17 mil/year contract, he HAS to be great. Take a minute and think about recent history with the Dolphins and veteran WRS - Mike Wallace, Brandon Marshall, and even Ernest Wilford, it hasn't been that good. If you look at Wallace and Marshall, you see that they put up decent numbers, and if their salaries were not so high, they would be considered great acquisitions, but because of their salaries, they both only lasted two seasons in Miami. We have a tendency to do this. Think about Suh. The moment he signed that contract, he was a letdown. Was it his fault? Not really. We chose to give him a contract that he could not possibly live up to. I do think that Grier has learned from these mistakes. Take a look at the numbers and not necessarily the players in last year's signings. I noticed a lot shorter 3~ year deals. I love everything about those deals. If they are a bust, after one season they are organically already one foot out the door. Now Grier did make some bigger deals and therefore bigger gambles, but let's take a closer look. Byron Jones was the "risky" signing. But let's think about this. Jones is a man cover CB. Flo is all about man coverage. Aside from injury concerns, there is no real reason to think that Jones would not easily transition into that role in Miami - it worked. KVN was a truer risk. Schematically, we are similar to the Pats, and Flo knew he would fit. The talent level was different here, and his play was semi-contingent on the talent around him. Could his play have diminished because of this? Possibly. I trust Flo on his talent evaluation. Although this was not as low of a risk as Jones, I do feel like there was a realistic chance that this would work out and likely wouldn't be a total bust. The final variable that I think that is worth considering is the up and down of Parker. Here is the thing. When Fitz is in, Parker is a stud. Tua would come in, and Parker would disappear. Pay attention to how much better Gesicki does under Tua. $17 mil per year is a heck of gamble to see if they sync up or not. Like I said before, prior to the dropsies, I was a little more comfortable. I do like Godwin, but there is a lot to process.
I get alot of your points. My issue is rookie Wrs usually take 2- 3 years to develop and this Qb needs every advantage he can't get.
The first news piece I ever read that really made me like Flores was that he starts every single morning looking at the names on the waiver wire and researches them. At any given time, he can tell you everything he likes/dislikes about every free agent at every position...that's his "hobby", if you want to call it that. So I put a lot of trust on anyone he brings in. On this particular topic though, I think we pass on a free agent WR that's looking to get paid. I just don't see it fitting our philosophy, even though Godwin is young. I think we draft multiple WR's instead to compliment Parker, Gisecki and Williams.
Wallace and Marshall both were character problems, though. And Wallace was in large part a product of his system in Pittsburgh. Godwin has shown none of that, I loved him in college, and from the mid point of 2018 (when he was 22) though the end of 2019, he caught 134 passes, for 1795 yards and 12 TDs. We all know that Tua had issues getting the ball to our receivers last season, but if he's going to be the QB going forward, then he needs to figure out how to fix that problem. Giving up on getting him quality weapons out of the fear that he couldn't deliver the ball properly as a rookie won't make things end well.
Right. I follow what you are saying about not fearing getting him weapons. My thought is more about getting him the right type of weapons. For the life of me, I am trying to figure out if all of his short passes are a reflection of him or Chan Gailey. Honestly, while watching him play, I felt like Gailey either A - had zero faith in him or B - thought he was not very bright and was petrified of a turnover. If Tua is a guy who does truly like to get it out early, fine. Let's get him a superior slot guy that can work the those intermediate routes. If that is not the case, and Gailey just did a bad job, that works too. A guy like Godwin would make lot of sense. I am not sure about anyone else on this board, but there were multiple times where I really wasn't sure what I was looking at with Tua.
Bro, you are preaching to the choir on that. I'll tell you what. WR is one of the bust positions. How many times can you recall someone absolutely lighting it up on Saturday, measuring off the charts, or both, and they go on to be bad, bad. I am with you in the regard that we should be looking to sign an established WR. This year's crop is looking pretty good too. I think that this team is built really well. My only concern is that we will revert back to mismanaging the cap.
While I agree that the best way to build a team is through the draft, I would make an exception for Godwin (assuming a reasonable contract could be agreed to).
I agree man I just think Goodwin is a quality player and seems like a good dude off of it.I think he could really help us.
I think if you bring in a FA it should be Matt Milano. We need LB help and it also takes him off of the Bills. Upgrade through the draft on offense. With them trying to redo Allens deal, the cap dropping and both right tackle Daryl Williams and right guard Jon Feliciano hitting FA I think he's going to be available.
Personally I could see us going after a free agent AND draftee. Maybe even multiple of one or both. Our WR corps is just plain BAD. Real bad. Parker is just a dude, Williams can't stay healthy or catch, Grant can't catch, Albert Wilson hasn't played in like 14 years and anyone else under contract just needs to not be with the possible exception of Perry due to youth. If we have 3 new guys I wouldn't complain or be surprised. If we sign a marquee name I won't complain. If we draft 2 guys within the first 3 rounds I won't complain. If we draft a guy at 3 I will raise an eyebrow ... but won't complain. If we sign 2 WRs and draft 2 I won't complain. Just need better. I still say we toss a second at New Orleans for Thomas and see where that leads.
There are 3 positions I’d be willing to break the bank on FA and WR isn’t one of them. I’d have no problem signing a solid #3 in FA. Really would rather see us draft for a #1 pushing Parker to #2(assuming he can stay healthy).
I’d rather sign a FA than take a WR at 3 (or in the top 10) but I’d rather have Golladay or Allen Robinson over Godwin.
I am still open to taking a wide receiver in the first.... And I would still ink a wide receiver as a free agent. ( Davis and Robinson are the two guys I like the most. )
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Buccaneers will attempt to sign WR Chris Godwin to a long-term contract in the offseason. Godwin is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year but Tampa Bay could opt to franchise tag him if the two can't come to an agreement on a new deal. With both options on the table, Godwin is highly likely to be a Buccaneer next season. The Bucs look like they'll be running it back after the Super Bowl with Tom Brady and Mike Evans already under contract and reports indicating that they want both Godwin and Antonio Brown to return as well. Tampa Bay is working with enough cap space that they should be able to keep their core group of players around for 2021. Godwin's 840 receiving yards this season were a low dating back to his rookie campaign but he was also dealing with a litany of nagging injuries. He posted his first and second 100-yard games of the year in the past four weeks and will have a chance to end the season on a high-note in a Super Bowl shootout with the Chiefs. Not a huge Golladay fan, at least not at the price he will likely try and command (18-20/yr). He's good with contested balls and a solid red zone option, but isn't good at separating, and his injury status is kind of concerning. For the money, I'd go after Robinson or Godwin. If not, look at tier 2 options like Davis or Marvin Jones. I would absolutely be willing to invest both a big FA contact and a first rounder into the position. It needs a lot of help. There isn't a single guy I would be sad to lose, including Williams and Parker.
To be honest I like Terrence Marshall as much as any of the consensus top 3 guys (who to me are not so consensus) so if I do invest a 1st in a wr it’s likely in a trade down scenario. I also love Shi Smith in the mid rounds. As for Golladay not separating well...can’t agree. He separates just fine and there wasn’t much as far as injuries til this year it I do think the injuries as well as the salary cap dropping from 198 to 180 as rumored will compress a lot of the FA prices. As for tier 2 WR I like Curtis Samuel a lot. He brings a different mentality to the position then we currently have in our wr room.
Marshall is an interesting guy, lots of red zone production iirc, something we really need. I don't hate Kenny G, I just wouldn't pay him Robinson or Godwin money. If the market is depressed to get him at a good rate, he'd be a decent pickup. If he's commanding top tier money, I'd rather look at someone like Corey Davis or Curtis Samuel. In either case, I'd still draft 1-2 dudes. We just need playmakers so so badly. I also hear we may be in on Aaron Jones which I like as well. Guys who can make plays and have a nose for the end zone are struggle points for us. Edit: more on Golladay and separation. https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2020...nfl-worst-wr-at-getting-separation-on-routes/ He's a good receiver and excellent at using his body to shield the catch and position, but hes not a dude that puts separation between the DB.
I’ve never really noticed that on the eye test as far as Golladay. He’s still very productive though. I value him above Godwin who imo has benefited massively from Mike Evans being a great #1 WR. I also question Godwin's hands. For me my preferences are (anticipating their price tags as well) Golladay Robinson Samuel Davis Godwin Juju
