    TWO QUESTIONS:

1 - Regardless of how you feel about the idea of Grier taking a QB in the first round of the draft, if he did do it, what would you prefer?

    TRADE UP and take Lawrence.
    Fields at 3
    Wilson at 3
    Lance at 3
    Jones at 3
    Trask at 3
TRADE down and take someone later in the first.*** Comment your preference.

2 - were we to take a QB in the first - would you prefer we keep Tua to compete or trade him?

I think this should be a poll where you can choose multiple options.

#1 would be ideal but is unrealistic. I'm also fine with #2 or #3.

With Tua already on board, I see no reason to give up 1,000 first round picks in order to draft Trevor Lawrence. Let the Jaguars have him.

Furthermore, had Tua stayed at Alabama he would've continued the production from last year and matched what Mac Jones did this year thus putting he and Trevor as the clear #1 and #2 options. So I see Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa as the best two guys among this group.

With Tua already in Miami, I'm not in favor of drafting anyone at #3. It'd be crazy unless you think there's a real gem, which I do not. So, to be a good sport, I selected Ohio State's Justin Fields due to his running ability and passing efficiency.

I think it would be ludicrous to take a QB in the 1st. I also think it would be ludicrous to NOT hedge against potentially moving on from Tua in the next few years. I'd take a QB in the 3rd (Trask), and continue stocking up on picks/talent.

Yeah, there should be a poll option to take a QB in the later rounds. There's almost a zero percent chance we draft a QB in the 1st. It sends the wrong message to Tua, the fans and the entire league that we're already thinking Tua is a bust.

Of the names included, I'd want Lawrence or Trask. But I really hope we don't do something stupid to try and get Lawrence. And if we take Trask in the 1st, we failed as well...he's projected to go late 2nd/early 3rd.

Let me push you for answer to the OP. IF Grier did take a QB in the first, as ludicrous as that might be, what scenario would you be happiest with?

Lance at a trade-down to 12th or so would be least painful I guess.

Yes, let's keep the useless QB with no potential as our starter. Great idea! We can go 6-10 next season for sure. Maybe.

    I voted to trade down.

If Flores wants a QB in the first round, that's fine with me. I'm not so presumptive that I feel I need to tell him who that QB should be. I have no problem identifying why I think its a good idea.

We are going to need a good QB for a back up and we need to get one as soon as possible because Fritz may not be available. With two, 1st round selections, one should be more than good enough to be our main QB. The second QB could also be almost as good, so we are covered as far as a backup is concerned.

While I prefer a backup with several years of NFL experience, this coming year may be unique in NFL history, with so many franchise QB's retiring at the same time. This will deplete the FA QB field dramatically, so we will likely be as well off with our drafted QB as a backup. If he turns out to be almost as good as our main QB, then we can use him to trade for draft picks in a few years and replace him with a draft pick or a veteran in free agency 3 to 5 years from now.

This all makes real good sense to me.

Is it? Or does it mean that any QB who is a good athlete can run an offense like OSU's surrounded by some of the best talent in the nation? Same as Alabama.

    1) I think Lawrence and Fields will go 1-2, which leaves Wilson as the next best option. If we are going to draft a QB high then you need to get the best one available.

    2) After Arizona/Rosen and WFT/Haskins the trade value for 1st round QBs who don’t work out after year 1 has cratered. Tua has no trade value unless it is as part of a trade for Watson, where you would be swapping starting QBs that both teams would be happy to have back. Therefore the only option would be to keep him to compete if we draft a 1st round QB.

As an aside I think drafting a QB in the 1st round would be disastrous. Tua’s rookie year is analogous to most pro-bowl QB’s rookie seasons. has already shown

If the QB you draft in the first round is more talented, then you start him and get rid of Tua. Hanging onto a QB that may be good in two or three more seasons with an all-pro cast around him is safe, but it's not the way to make yourself a perennial contender.

It is. LSU was a QB wasteland before Burrow, but nobody suggested skipping him just because of the school's failure. There was a thing about Tedford coached QBs until Rogers came along. Patriot assistants have all been trash as head coaches but Flores looks good. It's not an argument. Evaluate the player. As a prospect, none of the prior OSU QBs were as good as Fields.

I'd take Wilson at #3, unless we got a nice trade offer that included a 2022 first rounder then I'd give Tua the 2021 season to show he can be a franchise QB. If Tua falters, you grab another QB with one of the 2022 first round picks.

Without that trade, I take Zach Wilson and let him push Tua for the starting role. If Tua shows good progress you trade Wilson away in 2022 OR if Tua struggles you give Zach the second half of the season to get experience and see what he has. Then trade Tua for a second rounder in 2022 and hope Zach develops into a franchise QB. It might even be good to keep both QBs around for 2022 and then trade one away in 2023. It's better to be sure you have the right one, and having two good starters is a nice problem to have.

Trade down and take Jones to compete with Tua.

Back when Tua got hurt and Alabama didn't miss a beat,, that should have been an unmistakable sign to hold off on committing to Tua and let's think this through. Now that we've had a good look at Jones, his numbers and, the fact that he actually won a national championship and placed 3rd in the Heisman voting it's apparent that Tua is likely nothing special. Trade back, upgrade to Jones and, add some extra draft picks.

Seriously Alex, the way you keep trashing Tua in post after post is becoming tiresome. It's not even based on reality. So a 6 year old girl would "honestly" be a better QB than Tua?

And you're not stuck with Tua. You said you'd stop being a Dolphins fan if he was our QB in 2021. Maybe it's time to find another team to root for that doesn't have a QB you think is the worst kind of human being possible? Why keep torturing yourself knowing that Tua is very likely our QB for 2021?

If the above is true you'd be better off targeting a QB at #3 overall you believe is significantly better than Tua, because if Tua is truly nothing special based on the rationale above, then neither is Jones.

Not true, we're not dealing in absolutes. You might be able to win with either but, Jones has made a better case for being the one.

Here's a question- is any of the incoming quarterbacks better than Deshawn Watson? Because if Miami is passing on Watson, then there's absolutely no way possible that they take a quarterback at #3...even if it's somehow Lawrence. How is that not common sense?

Our starting quarterback next season will be Tua or Watson...and Watson is a serious longshot.

No way to tell at this point and I think the real question would be, do you like those QB’s at #3 vs Watson for #3, #18, a 1st next year and some assortment of 2nd/3rd’s?

Obviously, to somehow work a deal with Jax for the #1 overall (to draft Lawrence) would be optimal. But, that's a pipe dram 'cause Jax ain't trading that pick (see Cincy 2020).

And, drafting another QB with #3 overall doesn't make much sense after investing the #5 overall in Tua last year (which is looking more and more like a HUGE mistake). But, you can't accurately assess whether or not he's your guy after a partial rookie season.

So, if I'm Grier I'm trying to trade that pick. And, if I can't then I'm selecting BPA to help Tua improve his level of play. Most think that means Smith, but I'd be targeting Sewell. Build from the trenches. Adding Sewell may not be the sexy pick, but he would help fortify the line. QB's with protection are usually much more successful then those that are running for their lives soon as the ball is snapped (see Ryan Tannehill).

    JMO...

Want nothing to do with drafting a QB in the first this year, but if I had to choose, it'd be trade up for Lawrence. If Tua would have stayed an extra year we wouldn't be having the conversation of Tua vs. anyone else.

I agree with you.Its either Wilson or trade back and get another 1st rd pick for 2022 and that pick should be a good one since you are trading to a team that will be starting a rookie QB.
    If Tua sucks this year draft another one;

If the Dolphins aren't 100% on Tua what's more likely for Grier and Flores AND, ultimately, what do you think is better?

1 - Draft a top QB prospect at 3, have the two young guns compete, and keep the rest of your draft picks to continue building the team?

2 - Obtain Watson at a cost of this year's two first round picks, second round picks, Tua, maybe another veteran and/or some future high round picks?

Watson is a proven top-3 QB in the league, plus he's young. Imagine bringing in Payton Manning in year 4 of this career....or Marino leaving year 4 of his career with Miami. What would the "fair value" be? I'd personally guess 5 or 6 first rounders minimum.

Personally, I'd love to draft another young QB, keep Tua and tell them to battle it out the next few seasons. Dream scenario for me. But Watson changes things because the opportunity is so incredibly rare in the NFL...you don't have a Marino or a Manning asking to be traded in their prime very often. That's the caliber Watson already is and it's worlds better than the potential of Tua/Lawrence or anyone you want to list as the 2nd drafted QB.

That doesn't mean I'm not high on Tua or one of the rookies in this class....it's just a different conversation. You take the young, generational talent at QB every single time regardless of the cost.

The second choice. Drafting another QB and letting them "compete" is nonsensical. If you drafting a guy, you trade Tua, end of story.

Well, some of you might remember and know that in the BAD OLD DAYS, it usually took quarterbacks 3-5 years to reach the point at which they might be considered good enough to start for a NFL team. The recent demands for instant gratification seem to have reached way beyond boiling point under normal conditions and fans have pressurized the draft choices to become superstars in their first training camp or else. Reminds me of the two vultures talking with each other at the rear of the cattle herd and the younger one jumps up and says "Wait? Hell no! I'm going out and kill something!"

On the other side of that coin, the Dolphins have historically been one of the teams that gives both coaches and quarterbacks WAAAAYY too much rope before they let them hang themselves.
