How did Thomas finish the game if the injury was serious enough to land him in IR? Even today he stated that he hoped to practice tomorrow. Strange

IR means he's done for the year. :pity:

PUP list before the season starts allows teams to attempt to bring a player back after the first 6 regular season games, a 2 week roster exemption is available before league rules force the team to either activate or place the player on season ending IR.

    Wow.

Scout.com had it before anybody. They were right.

Either Donald Thomas is the toughest mofo around, or the Phins pulled a Saban and didn't want to wait a few weeks for it to heal (a la Joe Toledo).

How could have he played the rest of the game if the injury was so bad? Any word on what type of ankle injury it is?

That's a good point. It shows how tough he is. This injury is one that really bothers me. He was a very raw prospect coming out and didn't have much experience. Despite that, he came out and won the job over Shawn Murphy whose probably going to start now. He showed a lot of promise and drew praise from the Jets defensive line, which imo is a good one on the interior. He really looked good out there and it just all went down the drain for this season.

I really don't get how a guy can finish a game and then have it be a season ending injury. Maybe it just got numb? We need a ThePhins.com official doctor to explain this stuff.

I feel the same way but it may not be that bad if he gets settled in quickly. He didn't impress too much in TC when he got dominated at both Guard spots. Big "if" though. We'll see how this goes.

Evan Mathis started 15 games in 2006 but only played in 1 game last year.

ah thats just awful, just awful. donald really needed experience this season. he had pro-bowl potential in the future. tis definitely puts a damper on those hopes. a lot has to go right when dealing with raw talent.

If he is on IR does this rule out a broken Bone? I would think if he broke a bone in his foot or even ankle he could return in 6 weeks or so. Because he kept playing on it we know its not his achilles, and probably not any torn tendons. I hope that playing on it isn't what led to him being shelved for the year. I guess we will just find out tomorrow. Big blow on top of an already rough first week though.

Well, Mathis made it through Panthers camp, he was a last cut, so he is in shape, and right now, I'd rather see him play then Shawn Murphy...

    Just...damn.

The Dolphins signed three-year guard Evan Mathis, a nephew of Killer Bs star Bob Baumhower, to bolster the young offensive line and possibly take Thomas' place. Mathis, a former third-round pick by the Panthers in 2005, played for Dolphins offensive coordinator Dan Henning and offensive line coach Mike Maser in Carolina from 2005-06.

Sucks and the injury can't be that bad he played the whole game on it.

If he was to have a broken bone, he would be back in six to eight weeks. That doesn't seem to be the case here. I didn't see the injury so I don't know how it went down but this could be a torn tendon or a hairline fracture is my guess. He could have a broken bone and the team just didn't take a chance on him coming back. I don't know but this may be a bad move by the staff because they may rushed this by putting him on the IR. Do they even have a diagnosis of this injury?

I agree with you on the IR seeming rushed. I know people say he is tough but if an Injury is bad enough to end your season immediately you have probably torn something that allows your foot to move the way it does. Without certain tendons attached no amount of tough will help you play because you foot just won't work anymore. The worst part of it is we have next to zero depth on the line and we had made it all the way through training camp and preseason with no injuries.

Obviously this will have a major deleterious effect on the O-line, especially in the run game.

His strength at the POA was a help, and we have also last five weeks of chemistry that was developed with Vernon and Samson.

    A bad day, indeed.

That said, I am more concerned about whether Thomas will be able to return at the same level next training camp. The ground he has lost may never get made up, especially if the Front Office plugs in another lineman there who is mediocre, but with less upside.

After watching Thomas' college film, I like him a lot. I hope he comes back stong next year and starts, as I think his upside is worth it.

It just became a bad week, indeed.

Of course, it doesn't really affect our Superbowl run that much.

will allen, y. bell, ronnie, ferguson, jake long and carey are losses that could plummet us under 3 wins. but outside of these guys i cant think of too many more people this season was as crucial too, for the reasons you just stated. i'd hate to see Thomas go by the way-side, after all he's shown. he had potential all-pro written all over him. drawing such praise from coaches and the jets(apparently even when playing injured). but such a raw rookie with this skill-set absolutely needed this season for experience. im really bummed about this one. the jets game is one thing. this is just a terrible stroke for us, and it sets us back as a team.

    Oops.

    Sorry, bud.

I had a glance at the original post to see if it had been updated and didn't see anything there, then saw the last few posts talking about waiting for Sparano's presser so thought the Dolphins statement hadn't been posted.

All in all, just sad news, though... however we hear it.

And the jets baaaaarely beat us, even though our WRs suck and we had no running game.

Doh! That didn't go so well

man oh man... this just plain sucks. Loosing Thomas for the season hurts bigtime IMO. He's already proven to be ready to be a starter, this year of experience would have been extremely valuable come next year. Big setback for our OL IMO. Hopefully it doenst hinder his development going forward too much...

I'm thinking that could indeed be the case. That they simply didn't want to wait that long for him to come back.

Again, I use the example Saban shelving Glass Joe Toledo when doctors said he'd be back in 4 weeks. Not that this is the case, and that case was a bit extreme, but that's how many teams approach things. They can't/don't want to wait that long.

The crappy thing is, as an IR guy......even when Thomas is healed he cannot participate in practice.

This is the first move I really disagree with.

Granted, we don't know the extent of the injury yet, but you don't place a guy on IR (that isnt really 'super' hurt) when he has shown to be a "godsend" as Parcells himself put it.

They must've watched the tapes and thought that this guy really isn't that great and that sitting him down and bringing Mathis in wouldn't be a real drop off.

I dont know man, I dont know.
