Which positions can we address later in the draft and which players are truly worthy of our first round picks?

For example, Najee is likely worthy of a first round pick but... is he that much better for the Dolphins than a running back available later in the draft?

Maybe Javonte Williams or Etienne are available in the second or Michael Carter in the late second or third.

Or WR - do we definitely grab Smith or Chase or will we be fine with Moore, Bateman, or Toney?

Most consider OL, WR and RB reasonable positions of depth in this draft so maybe the positions we need most can, counter-intuitively, be addressed later and other positions addressed earlier to grab the little talent available?

So which are the positions you think we can comfortably wait on, and which players do we HAVE to target early?

Okay, let's say we decide no WR, RB, OL or QB in the 1st round. Then what? That leaves the TE position the only thing left on offense and Pitts is the only viable candidate...who could potentially go at #4 or #5. That means we're drafting 2 defenders in the 1st- but who is worthy of #6 & 18?

At #6, I don't see any defender truly worth this pick except for Parsons. Maybe Surtain II or Jaycee Horn at corner? That makes zero sense though so we now have Parsons locked at #6. Great player, super high motor, but I have a feeling the fans would absolutely riot over this pick. He's the only defensive name possible that could justify the sixth pick in the draft though.

At #18, we'd almost have to be thinking edge so names like Jaelan Phillips or Azeez Ojulari come to mind....maybe Rosseau? I just don't like this line of thinking at all, but I'd prefer edge over CB anyway if we went all defense in the 1st.

Personally, I think #6 HAS TO BE an offensive player and I think it will be a skill position (WR/TE), or we can play safe and grab Sewell at OT. Expect to see Pitts, Chase or Smith called here though because it's the best value at #6. I DO NOT think we trade back since we spent an extra 1st rounder to move up, but if we do then we're going to seriously rip someone off in the process (like gaining an extra 1st next year, a 1st this year plus a 2nd and maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder). That's just the Grier way.

Agree with Key, I think Chase and Pitts are all pro type of players and think that’s the way we go at 6. Normally I wouldn’t draft a WR or TE that high but were not in the market for QB’s and we invested a lot in OL last year.

At 18, I think it’s too high to take a RB. Based on the draft and who’s expected to be there, I think we go pass rusher. Honestly, I think that’s as big of a need as we have right now.

Then the 2nd round comes down to BPA. There should be good OL, DL or RB’s available. I’m

No RBs in the first round IMHO. No CBs either. Actually, no defensive players at all in the first round if I were making the decisions. I'd go WR and OL. DE or LB in the second.

Unless there is supreme value to be found, I really don't want to see any defensive players taken with our first three picks. We can wait on that entire side of the ball.

I agree! The main focus this year is to see if we have a qb or not.I would rather have the best TE or WR and best RB than a reach on an edge rusher. No sure fire Edge rushers in this draft.

Problem with your guys plan is the 18 pick is a value trap for offensive players.

Only guys in that neighborhood are Bateman, Harris or Etienne at skill position or Vera-Tucker, Darrisaw or Jenkins on the line.
(Anybody else would be a ‘stretch’ IMO at 18. And Smith or Waddle would be a prayer to fall to 18.)

I Wouldn’t be happy with any of those 6.
Keep in mind Last years RB class was considered better than this years. And the highest picked was 32 overall. The Dolphins also passed on Jonathan Taylor, JK Dobbins and Cam Akers at pick 39 last year. I think brass is new school analytics and don’t put as high a value on RB as some posters do here.
I don’t see Grier and co. taking a 1st round RB and I’m fully on board with that.!

For my part I think our first pick has to go on a true blue chip player.

Pitts is unique prospect in this draft. There is no TE like him and his physical makeup stand him apart among the WRs except maybe Chase. But even then the two aren't identical. Chase also looks very good as does Smith IMO. So, needs aside, any of those at 6 are hard, or impossible, to replace later on in the draft, and that would be the idea at 6, find someone you can't replace, or come close to replacing, later on - whoever that might be in your view.

Maybe Smith and Waddle don't fit this description, and later receivers could come close to matching their production. If so, you leave that sort of receiver until later and grab the unique prospect. I'm personally not certain about evaluating the later receivers so I'd be fine with Pitts, Smith or Chase at 6 or maybe Waddle.

Sewell could also be classed as unique but it's our IOL that needs help more than at Tackle, so I only take Sewell at 6 if no one else is there, or the staff have decided Jackson won't cut it after just one year.

18 is maybe a difficult slot. I'd almost rather package it and move up or trade back to get better value. Najee looks like a great player and could be seen as the unique RB in the draft. If so, he's okay at 18, but in all likelihood I think we can wait until 36 or 50 or maybe later to find a RB.

    J. Williams, J. Hawkins, M. Carter could all be decent talents. I'd understand Harris or Etienne at 18 but I think we can wait on RB.

Parsons at 18 I could understand - if he somehow dropped that far. And maybe one of the other Edge prospects if the Dolphins are convinced by the individual. If not then I think a trade would be better.

I think Centre and Guard would be good investments. I think 50 works, or 81. Maybe even both! I think we need some decent prospects at those positions. Meinerz, Myers, Humphrey, Dickerson, could all be decent investments in the second or third rounds and worthy of targeting if available.

We don't have any 4th round picks, so I would understand a trade down at 6 or 18 in order to get some more in that range, because I think there is some decent talent to be had there. One of the IOL prospects might fall that far, or an RB prospect.

Considering we "only" have five picks in the first three rounds, none in the fourth, and we have needs at WR, Center, maybe guard, and RB, I think we have to focus on those this draft and BPA elsewhere. RB can maybe wait longest. WR could also prove deep.

I'm a little out of bounds with my thoughts on drafting in general and this draft particularly/ I like drafting football players, best available when you're up. If they fill a position of need great, if not thats ok too if they upgrade you. I don't care about "reaching" If thats the guy you want, pick him. I know we need upgrades on offense and the D was great last year but...

WR, RB and TE can all be addressed in he later rds. I would like to see ILB, C, and DT be priority in the first 2 rds WR EDGE and RB after, but again depending on BPA. If the best player available is a CB, and he's clearly an upgrade over Jones and Iggy, pick him. BPA an OT, pick him, If Fields is there at 6 and you think he'll beat Tua in open competition, pick him.
I'd be happy with any player that makes us better at any position, whether it's a position of "need" or not.

Can't wait on any offensive skill players early. By early I mean maybe the entirety of the first two rounds but at minimum 2 offensive skill positions. After that maybe Egde. I think we are really neglecting the safety position personally.

The only position I'm saying we can be comfortable at right now is CB and TE. Ironically a TE is marked as the best skill player in the draft by most (including me.) Our OL is significantly improved but still needs work to be an actual elite group rather than a mediocre one. I'd probably say the same exact thing about our RB, WR, RT, S/FS, DL+Edge, LB, these are the positions we cannot afford to avoid if we're trying to plug as many holes as possible in one draft (which is usually one of the goals)

Are we drafting for need or talent? I'm always going to go BPA unless it's a Quarterback and we already have a HOF playing at that spot (which we don't, but that's a different topic for another day). I'm always going BPA though otherwise, and right now we're in a position with the sixth pick to not only take the best player available in the draft, but also take a player at a position of need. With that said, I am immediately going to go with either WR, or O line with that pick. If Sewell is there at six, you take him. If Chase or Pitts are there, then you take one of them. For me, it's between those three who all happen to be very talented players at positions we can't ignore. I know we have a ton invested in the offensive line, but it wouldn't upset me at all to see it completely solidified.
With our 18th pick, I think the focus should continue to be on the most talented overall player that is still left on the board. Offensive or defensive player, whoever we think has the biggest upside is who we should take. For this draft, my money is on an offensive player as well at 18 unless a guy like Parsons falls down board.
Now, to answer the OP's question. I love Myles Gaskin, but if there is one position that we can't ignore to upgrade, it would have to be running back for me. How awesome would it be to have an all pro bell cow in the backfield just running through defenses? If we draft Sewell with our sixth pick and then take either Harris or Etienne with the 18th pick, I will not be upset in the least. I want to see this team with a featured back that is an absolute monster the way Ricky Williams was back in the day. Now....Obviously this draft doesn't have a Ricky Williams, but I think both Etienne and Harris are going to be very very good wherever they end up. You solidify the offensive line and pair a talented running back with Tua and that will be all the insulation he will need to succeed. There will be no excuses, we'll have our answer as far as Quarterback goes, and if it doesn't work out, we're at least stacked everywhere else for another guy to come in and get the job done.
Let me be clear, that I'm not trying to make this draft about TUA. If I were a GM or in charge of making a pick, it would always be best player available. I just think that this specific draft will have the best players available that are also going to fill voids AND insulate Tua. I haven't been this excited about a draft in quite some time. You gotta love the position we are in. I trust this organization for once. Barring an unfortunate injury, this is as close to a "can't miss" as you get with this first round. Both picks should be instant contributors for a team that just won ten games.

    Lol.

Since we can't draft all other positions in the first round which ones do you think we can wait on to draft later?

Depends on how much later really. Is later the second round? Or are we talking all the way down to day 3?

Its a tricky question, because by positional value, WR and TE we could wait on, but those positions also represent large needs and the bulk of the truly elite 4-5 guys in the draft (Pitts, Smith, Waddle, Chase). So we could wait, but we would miss out on the true elite for a lesser talent up top.

I think it's less position and more players, especially at "weak" positions. For instance, if Paye is gone at 18, I'd be good saying we can wait until later to take an edge guy.

I watched a Sportcenter draft special last night that had some backstory info on some of the top prospects. After hearing Kwity Paye's story I really really want him in aqua. That man's on a mission and there is going to be no stopping him. Chuba Hubbard is another one RB from OKlahoma St that needs to be a Dolphin.

Definitely. It's not easy because it means familiarity with the prospects in the draft. I'm certainly no expert, I've been tying to become familiar with some of the players at positions of need. I just wanted to hear if others had input on this.

Yeah it's kind of a weird year. WR especially is very deep for the second year in a row, and is traditionally a spot where you can get good production without early picks.

But, with no elite defensive talent guys like Chase, Pitts and Smith at the top, plus our need for skilled play makers, it makes sense to just take one early. However, the depth means we could potentially double up later on.

RB is also a low value position, as we saw last year. However, imo the top guys this year are better than last, and it's a big need on the team, so I can't be upset if we use 18 or 36 on it.

CB and S are easily spots we can put off until later imo. Good depth and lower value.

Its kind of a weird draft, but definitely lots of good players.

I think that with the 6th pick, we have all the makings of adding a solid player at a position of need... Famous last words, right?

I think the 18th pick is a bit of no-man's land. I think that QBs are gonna help us, and good guys will fall. Every way, I cut it and dice it, I just don't see the blue chip guys getting to 18.

Who do I think slides to us? I think that these edge guys are the ones who slip. Unfortunately, the reason I think they slip is that they are not very good. Optimistically, I think these guys may wind up being Shaq Lawson guys - 6-7 sacks per year. I really think we can find guys that much later.

If we can't move up, I bet the value might be O-line. I could see Alijah Vera-Tucker or Teven Jenkins available. I think we really should expand our minds and be willing to take the best player available here.

If we get a great player that is not exactly a position of need, I will be happy. Taking a Charles Harris because he is a need and passing up on Dalvin Cook because we had Jay Ajayi looks really foolish in hindsight.

Outside of CB and maybe DL, there’s really not a lot of positions that we couldn’t get better at. OL is young but they’re nowhere near good enough to take us to the next level. Now is the talent there and they just need more time to develop, maybe. That’s why I like someone like Meinerz in the 2nd/3rd. Got ourselves a C or G.

I think Edge is probably our biggest need at this point factoring in what won us games last year and what will going forward. I think 18 or 36 there will be some players available but am totally open to BPA.
