Huh....didn't think about that when we just grabbed the tackle. I wonder how much cap space we have left...and if that means a bigger name could be headed out the door (Howard)? If that's a possibility, then #6 could go in an entirely different direction (Surtain II).

    Personally, I would HATE THAT!

There are many ways the Dolphins can create cap space without letting anyone go.

I think it's worth considering that Griers ongoing strategy will be to convert talent into picks on a regular basis, keeping only essential pieces and playing chess with other assets just as with Tunsil.

A sort of economic strategy involving a talent budget (which is what a cap is, really).

This could be in the form of compensatory picks, if not straight trade value.

It may also be a factor in those and other drafts where we seek replacements for guys who are about to become expensive.

    Interesting times.

Howard could be worth 3 first rounders just like Tunsil, at which point we'd grab Surtain with the 1st of those picks and cross our fingers. There could be massive upside there but I'm in the camp of maximizing value from your own draft picks instead of rebuilding the wheel over and over again. I hated the Tunsil trade...I fully understand we couldn't say no there...but I hated it anyway.

It was a super-smart move....but we gave up one of the top tackles in the league. I'm not sure if I still hate it or not, honestly.

It was DEFINITELY the right move though. As Tunsil said when he was called to the front office and saw the trade board, "Hell, I'd trade me for that too!" There's no way around admitting that it was one of the best trade deals of the past decade.

Cut Candidates; ‘21 Salary / Cap savings

    McCain -7.1M / saves 5.7M
    Rowe - 6M / saves 5.0M
    Wilson - 5.2M / saves 2.9M
    Grant - 4.7M / saves 2.9M
    Jesse Davis - 4.5M / saves 2.5M
    Fejedelum - 2.5 M / saves 2.5M
    Smyth - 2.3M / saves 2.1M

I’m Not saying these players should be cut... But they are the only candidates that could make sense based on multi million dollar savings and relatively low dead cap money.

Bobby McCain is the obvious move if we draft a safety, and probably the only necessary one.

Some good depth at the position as well, so we wouldn't have to force our hand in rounds 1-2.

Also keep in mind that one of the reasons we may need to create cap space is because of how many high round picks we have.

Sure thing. But even the #3 pick would have a lower cap number than McCain this coming season. And the entire rest of the draft put together is pretty close to his number.

And this is why I was ok with a quiet FA. We are finally building the right way, through the draft!

I'd think some pass catchers will wind up getting axed shortly after the draft.

Unfortunately, so do I. My gut instinct is that Jakeem Grant will be the first of the receivers to go, but it could actually be Grant and Wilson at the same time. Grier said that he didn't hold the COVID-vacations against anyone, so we'll see. The other side of that is a full season without training, reps, etc. to stay sharp...maybe Wilson isn't the same player from two seasons ago.

I'd love for Jakeem to make this roster but honestly, I don't see where he fits anymore.

Not that he's a bad player (he's not) but it's a deep safety draft. We could see a contributor/starter in rounds 3-5 potentially. Also, I believe in a Flores (Belichick/New England) scheme, safety is not a value play in the first round, unlike CB. Imo there will be better options on both sides of the ball. Kwitty Paye makes a ton of sense, as does Zaven Collins. Offensively, we could go with Creed at C, take a RB of our choice, or just see who falls. Someone will. Maybe it's Micah Parsons. Maybe Devonte Smith. Maybe Pat Surtain.

He's flat out a bad receiver, and he's honestly not a good punt returner either. He'll take one for a TD every other year, sure, but outside of that his returns are below average and he's frankly a danger to turn it over or lose field position more often than he is to get even 15 yards. And I was delighted by how the team chose not to return kicks last year most of the time and just take the TB, so that takes that aspect of Grant's game out of play as well.

We should very well be able to replace him with a much, much cheaper player. And yes, he should be the next one out the door.

I wouldn't say he's a bad receiver- he's only had a limited number thrown his way, which can skew the drop stats to some degree. The other side of that though is that he's always open and makes big plays when he does catch it.....just a hard player to gauge. He's still one of my favorites on the roster so I'll be sad to see him go.

I notice now some of these cap saving numbers change (more favourably for The team) if the players are cut AFTER June 1.

    McCain - 7.1M / saves 6.4M
    Rowe - 6M / saves 5.5M
    GRANT - 4.7M / saves 4.1M
    J Davis - 4.5M / saves 3.6M

If any of these guys are cut, I would expect it to come after June 1... for maximum savings.
Fejedelem, Wilson and Smyth numbers make no difference (now or after June 1)

I agree with the majority. Grant’s odds are looking extremely slim.

The issue is though, that some of the dead money is pushed into the next season. That's why I've always hated doing post June 1 cuts.

We've got a lot of picks this year. It's going to cost money to sign them. And the few players we've added on one year contracts etc. cut into what space we had.

Not long term trouble at all. 2022 is looking fantastic. Just enough to sign this years picks, and it won't be difficult or painful.

That Schad tweet in regards to WRs is only really applicable to the upcoming season, though. After that, the only real money is on Parker, who has very reasonable cap hits of about 9m in 2022 and 2023, and Waddle. Fuller and Wilson's deals are up after 2021, Hurns could (will) be gone by then, and Grant could be gone any day now.
