Not sure how I feel about this pick. I felt similar with the Jason Taylor pick back in the day and was quite happy with the outcome.

The concern I have with Jaylen is his concussions for sure, but outside that he had a great 2020 one year previously before his retirement he was ok not a stud and his early speaking I knew of him but not a lot about him.

Reading all the press it sounds like this kid has a motor and looks very similar in build and skill sets to Jason Taylor.

For those who have watched him play do you think he will be able to fill those shoes someday? If concussions don’t take him out?

    or am I reaching here?

I thought that but wasn't going to say it out loud- JT was a generational player who just maximized his talent. I don't think it's fair to make that type of comparison (just like I wouldn't compare Tua to Marino). I will say that the kid has a very high motor and ATTACKS the ball carrier like a pit bull, plus he has a good combination of speed and strength. Great prospect- but it's too soon to tell.

My sentiments exactly. Didn't know anything about him but after watching all the footage of him today, rightly or wrongly, that's the comparison I made.

I never really noticed him playing for the Canes he was never a force that i thought any teams were afraid of. He was also on the field when NC ran for over 500 yards might have been 600 i forget setting a college football record.

I'd say not exactly. Although JT did come back and play some OLB, he was essentially a DE for most of his career here.

I am not the biggest Phillips fan, but when I was doing my evaluation, I thought he would be better served as an OLB. He is really an athletic player, and I think he is more than capable of doing things beyond just rushing the passer.

I don't think I am going to start comparing him to Jason Taylor before he has even stepped on the field. He is arguably the best Edge in the draft and as far as his concussions go he seemed to be pretty smart about that. He got his 1st concussion after being hit by a car while on a scooter. He played the following season and got another concussion and "retired" after that season. He took that next season off and let his brain heal, meanwhile transferring to The U. He played all last year without any trouble so I think his medical is more than a little exaggerated.

    I guess we will see.

Weren’t there some issues between him and Chip Kelly that also contributed to his “retirement “?

I don’t need him to be Jason Taylor but if he’s even half of that, it was a great pick

How exactly could you have felt similar about jason taylor? Taylor was a 3rd round pick, phillips is a first rounder 18 overall. There should be much bigger expectations on phillips than there were on Taylor.

I though Taylor was a reach. He was this skinny tall end who I thought would get hurt in the NFL. He proved me wrong! Im not talking about from a "Draft" position state I just fill Jaylen is similar inn statue and plays a lot like Jason did for us.
