Here's another simple poll that plays off the one about making the Super Bowl. We all know it's ultimately about the QB, so this is a good time to refresh your opinion on where Tua's at in his development.

In your opinion, do you have more faith in Tua for 2021, less faith, or about the same as the start of last season?

Tua showed flashes of what we want him to be and what we don't want him to be. It's 50/50 on whether he's the answer at QB. Can't really respond to this poll because it matters so little what our opinion is of him in preseason. We just need to see clear evidence during the 2021 regular season that he's the answer at QB.

I've had confidence in Tua from the time we drafted him and that hasn't changed. Last year gave some of us doubt about him, but given the roster changes and a relatively stable offseason, my confidence is high that he's going to reward our selecting him.

I was going to say I agree with you but then I read your second sentence.

I have less doubts about him after his play less year, but I was thinking he had potential to be a HoF quarterback before he was drafted so my opinion is the same.

Well, he went thru the rehabs and worked really hard in the off-season getting buff, watching film and throwing a lot of footballs, so that may play into some people's decision making as well.

I'm definitely not feeling more positive. I'll say that much. Last year we had a lot of optimism floating around. That was understandable. At this point, we're pretty confident Tua isn't going to be a bust, but there are also some major concerns that are directly associated with whether or not he becomes a "franchise QB."

Tua had a really bad Y/A last year. He was kind of a check-down guy. People forget but he failed to throw for even 100-yds in 3-of-9 games and he failed to achieve even 5.5 Y/A in 5-of-9 games!

That was all brought on by a lack of pulling the trigger on intermediate throws. He just looked like a pop-gun QB to be perfectly honest. That must improve if Tua's going to be a franchise QB.

With all the injury concerns last year and the questions over how mentally prepared Tua really was it's all sort of a toss-up. I don't necessarily feel worse than last year but I can't say I feel better having seen how ineffective he was after the first few games.

Much less than the start of last season. He didn't show me what I needed to see from him. Hope it was just rookie jitters, but he'll have to prove that.

I didn't understand the hype around Tua when he was in college while healthy. Then, he suffered the extreme injury.

I didn't want the Dolphins to draft him.

I didn't see much when he played last season that made me excited about the future.

So no, my opinion of him hasn't really changed. Fingers crossed that he's healthy. Fingers crossed that the offensive line continues to develop. Fingers crossed that despite ignoring the RB position to a criminal level, the team can run the ball enough to keep the defense honest this season. And fingers crossed that Tua can play like a " bus driver" QB this season and do enough to get the ball into the hands of the offensive weapons.

All that being said, what's done is done, and I think that barring absolute disaster, the team needs to give him all of this season and all of next before deciding whether he's the future or not.

My opinion hasn't changed, I know he can play. I said last year that I hoped they would leave him on the bench all year and brought him in late in games for mop up duty and I wish that is what they would have done. He wasn't completely healthy, had no training camp or offseason to speak of. This season he is healthy, he has been in the offseason program this year. His coaches have been able to do their jobs. So many Phins Fans have been ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Give him this year to show if he can play or not.

I'm with you on most of this. I didn't want the Dolphins to draft him either. I thought, and still do really that Hurts was/is the better QB out of that Bama trio.
But the part I don't agree with is not seeing much last year to make me excited about the future because there were some plays, some moments that made me say DAAAANG! I've talked about it before and it's long enough ago for the details to be foggy but his first start there was a 3rd and 7 play from our 20 ish where he had to dodge busted protection and he gave a little wiggle hop up the middle and looked like he was going to take off running but then just threw a dart, with the fastest release across his body to the right sideline into a teacup. I replayed that throw 5 or 6 times before I could really see it all. That play right there sold me. The bruddah got the tools. He's a Kanaka and we are in for a ride.

Mine opinion is basically the same. I'm hopefully but waiting to see what happens. Last year didn't change that. The offseason kept me hopeful.

Sure, he made a play here or there. I thought that the short TD pass that he had in AZ was impressive. But he had far too many moments where I had no idea what his intention was, and others where the ball just flopped out of his hand into the dirt with no oomph.

The Week 15 home game vs New England last year is what I hope is the template for the start of this season. The team ran the ball well, and he made smart plays all day long without trying to force it downfield to guys who weren't open. Given that our entire skill position group was injured that day, one would think that with the addition of at least four WRs who are better than the ones on the field with him then that the production should increase were they to go that route.

My opinion is that because of
    1) Injuries to the WR room, especially late in the season.
    2) Restricted practices due to Covid
    3) Possible lingering effects of the hip injury
that Tua basically gets a Mulligan for 2020. I saw enough to support both sides of the argument, but not enough to shift the needle in either direction for me.
For the record, I was high on Tua coming out, and thought his statistical production in 2020 was underwhelming

Tagovailoa showed flashes of lightening and some duds last season…but last season has to be put into perspective.

Tua was 10 months off of ***MAJOR*** surgery from his hip injury

He had no off season workouts, no off season camps

He also came in playing an offense designed, not for Tagovailoa’s talents, but Ryan Fitzpatrick

Tua last season is a wash in my book. He got a taste of the game at the nfl level. Taught him quite a bit…what works, what doesn’t and what he needs to work on.

This season he’ll have no excuses. Off season workouts, off season training camps and an offense tailored to what he does best. This year is sink or swim for him.

He doesn’t need to be Marino. He doesn’t need to be Elway He doesn’t need to be any big names pro bowl quarterback but he does need to make GOOD throws for positive yardage and minimize turnovers. If he does that and we have a good solid effective running game, wet going to see a lot more “W’s” than we are “L’s”

Additionally, the defense needs to force a lot more 3 and outs. The more opportunities Tagovailoa has with the ball, the better the odds are he’s going to start hitting on all cylinders

At this point, we've all watched a ton of film breakdowns and so I think that argument is kind of dead. Chan Gailey was routinely giving him a concept on one side with a single read on the other. Any QB worth their salt should be able to handle that. Tua just didn't read the defenders as sharply as he should've.

The coaches simplified the play-calling when Tua was in the game, too. It was pretty vanilla stuff for the NFL. Again, Tua just wasn't used to reading the field post-snap at the level the NFL clearly demands. This isn't anything to do with Chan Gailey's play design (which they made sure was extra easy for Tua).

Fact is, Tua missed a lot of open receivers. He just wasn't letting it rip into certain windows and there were plenty of times he inexplicably looked right at somebody who was coming wide open and yet didn't throw it.

Tua did make some real good throws last year, it's just worrisome that he wasn't able to do it on a week-to-week basis. He was clearly ahead in some areas, like footwork, while being mentally behind.

To me, this was a pretty serious disappointment considering he was marketed as a smart player. I think what we got last year was more cautious than it was smart.

I agree that will work but I'd point out that it's only acceptable in the short-term. If this team gets to the stage where we expect Play-off wins he'll need to become a more serious threat to opposing defenses.

During the draft I preferred either Herbert, or a trade back and Love. But, that was because of the team I thought they were trying to build on offence. Parker, Williams, and Giesiki as the main pass catchers. Big receivers, strong arm jump ball type of throws. An offense where a more mobile and stronger armed Fitzpatrick type would shine. It doesn't matter how good the coverage is, our guys are going to out catch yours and keep the chains moving.

During the season, I found Tua's arm less lively than at Alabama, expected with the injury. He was much more risk adverse, not expected. Accuracy was as expected. Typical rookie information processing. Sometimes he nailed it, often he missed a read or was a beat late, this was better than the expectations I had with his offseason. He progressed nicely until the WR corpse became the WR "corpse" with injuries. Hard to draw many conclusions from the last 1/4 of the season. Not much you can do with over half of the players on the field on offense being rookies. Never seen anything like that. What was better than expected was his pocket presence and mobility. Due to both his injury and the line talent differences from Alabama to Miami. Meaning that his O line at Bama significantly out matched it's competition and the opposite was true in Miami last year. He impressed me in the pocket. Making absolutely free rushers miss, generally having a good feel, etc...

Then there is this offseason. Hip has clearly healed more. Won't know till games, but his throws seem much more lively. Matches what he says he feels. Throwing with his whole body again. Has been in his playbook all offseason. He's been training his body, not rehabbing his hip. Huge difference from a year ago. First minicamp practice and they are directly addressing aggressive throws. Couldn't be happier with that.

Most importantly, the WR corpse has not just been revived, it has been revolutionized. I think Waddle was the best, most impactful, pass catcher in the draft. Better than Pitts. His route running is nuanced and impeccable, his speed + quickness is godly, his hands are great. His only ding is size, and with todays game, doesn't really matter. Not with the offense I expect now. Then, add Fuller. The best free agent WR by a long ways when judging by talent. Uncoverable when on, fastest player in his draft class. Injury concerns, already missing time for steroids, so potential for issues. But, upside is amazing. Just adding those two lets you change the O. Tailor it for a QB with Tua's accuracy. Who do you leave one on one? How big are the holes in the zones with Waddle/Fuller stretching the field? One misstep and any play can go for a score. Hell, they can play it perfectly and just be out run by either guy with a perfect pass. Should fit Tua's strengths to the proverbial T. I have such high expectations now.
