That last quote confuses me- did they restructure him this week or four months ago? And if it was 4 months ago, why is this news? I was interested because it's possible they're trying to free up money to restructure X. But we have no idea when this even took place, so I don't know if it's a clue or not.
IDK but I think it's just worded wrong. From the teams transaction site. https://www.miamidolphins.com/team/transactions/
No one seems to know what exactly the restructure did except for the Dolphins themselves to this point. If it was done this week, it would make sense that it was to clear money. That could be for the rookies, or X.
I'd read people talk about that, but I didn't see the need. The numbers of the contract were fair for both parties of he was a solid starter. If not, the Fins had zero risk and could cut him with no dead money.
I am not talking about individual opinions. Just people always look for specific reasons for moves such as these and the specific reason could be that they were planning on doing it from the beginning and it really doesn't mean much to their current plans.
So, why? How does that benefit the Fins at all other than freeing up a few million in cap space this season? Now they need a new MLB a year from now. Makes no sense to me.
I can't understand it either. As a player, why would you take $16M and two years off your contract unless the only other choice was for them to cut you? I don't understand that at all unless he's intentionally playing at a discount to be a Dolphin.
Well, he'll be 29 this year, and the Fins could have cut him after the season with no dead money. So from the player's perspective, its not all that different. He'll be a UFA.
Curious to know if he happily agreed to it. A lot of online commentary paints this picture as the Dolphins 'doing it to him' rather than a mutual agreement - which it may have been.
If the team ends up signing him to a new deal that pays him more than he was scheduled to make in 2022 and 2023, I'm going to puke. And seriously question Grier.
I've wondered that myself- if we didn't extend/amend Howard's contract because Watson is still in play and we'd need cap space. That would really bother me if we lose a defensive superstar over speculation.
