The SNES was released in the US during this week back in 1991. For me, that was also the week before I started high school, so it was personally a huge point in my life all around, lol. I wasn't able to actually get a SNES at that point, but I had been closely following its development for years as closely as an American kid could in those days. The hype was real. I eventually saved up virtually all of my allowance and birthday money and it became the first console that I ever purchased for myself about a year later, in the Autumn of 1992. It was absolutely worth it, with a huge step forward in graphics and gameplay from the NES. It was a treasure trove for early RPG and sports games, which remain two of my favorite genres to this day. For me, it was my main system for five years, until I jumped to the Playstation in 1997. It also was the era when I paid the most that I ever have for a singular video game, when before price standards, I paid about $85 for Final Fantasy III (6), which is about $156 adjusted for inflation today. It was still worth it. Did you guys love the SNES? Any big memories? Favorite games?
I had the SNES, not sure I loved it though I am sure I did at the time (we did have Shaq Fu after all). I remember my brother and I playing a lot of Street Fighter II and Ken Griffey Jr Baseball (that might not be the right name). For whatever reason, I don't remember having a football game on the system, but I want to say we had NBA Jam. It did have one of my favorite series of games though, Mega Man X. I got everything that game, including the hadouken. It also had one of my favorite RPGs ever (at least with nostalgia factored in), in Super Mario RPG. I know it had Chrono Trigger too, which is great, but I first played that after the SNES on handhelds I believe.
Ken Griffey Jr baseball was the first MLB game that was really good. I played a number of others on the NES and SNES up to that point, but it was a big jump up in graphics and quality. I played it a TON. They didn't have the MLBPA liscense, but you could edit players, so I spent ages changing the names of every player on every team, like I would later do in NCAA Football. NBA Jam was fun in its day too. Mega Man X was actually the last one that I ever played. I played all of them starting on the NES up to that point, but when I finished with that one, I kind of gave up on/got tired of the series, and really side scrollers all together.
I loved the SNES. I'm playing games on it now with my son. He enjoys Goof Troop which is a fun 2 player game. Earthbound is still my favorite game of all time. So much nostalgia with it. Mario RPG was great too. Same with Mega Man X.
