I would have fired him after the lap dance incident. Not because of any morality issues, but simply because that event cemented him into a position of ridicule among players and subordinate coaches. No one would be able to recover from a hit to their leadership like that.

Not that Urban Meyer’s actions require any defense and because I don’t follow the Jaguars and don’t know their roster, it would be interesting to see what any Ohio State alum that played for him at both Ohio State and Jacksonville have to say about all of this.

There has been one reported incident however that I can indeed actually defend Meyer on, the report of him yelling at his staff; telling them he had a better staff in Bowling Green and calling them a bunch of effing losers.

Well, the Jaguars are 2-11. They are indeed losing. It’s well known that Meyer is the epitome of an alpha type head coach. Maybe that alpha charlie that Meyer gave his staff was indeed warranted. There were times in the Army I myself issued one of those alpha charlies…individually or to the entire platoon. Sometimes an a$$ chewing is warranted.

But to the other shenanigans reported? Sorry, can’t defend any of those…particularly NOT flying back to Jacksonville with the team following the team’s loss to Cincinnati. I don’t care so much about the lap dance. Embarrassing yes, but who cares. My issue is you’re the commanding general, your troops just got their butts whipped and instead of leading them, you abandon them?

Piss poor leadership in my book

So do the Jags win this week? My initial reaction was to change my pick to the Texans, but a lot of teams over the years play better for the interim head coach the next few games. So I'm conflicted here, LOL.

I've thought he was an a-hole ever since he quit Florida with that BS story about his health and wanting to spend time with family and then turned around and took the Ohio State job.

Haven't we seen a similar situation in Saban? Just curious if others see this differently.

Saban was bad enough. Meyer compares more with Bobby Petrino in Atlanta, IMO. Both he and Urban Meyer were guys who were used to bullying their players and treating them like trash. College kids either take it or lose their scholarship but when you treat pros who make as much as you do like that, it's never going to work. I'll bet both Petrino and Meyer lost their interest in coaching NFL players the first time a good player told them to kiss his *** and the owner wouldn't let them do something about it.

The day that I heard Jacksonville signed him, I told my wife that he'd be gone by midway through next season. I knew he couldn't coach in the pros because I live in central Ohio and I saw the kind of narcissist he was at Ohio State.

I too live in central Ohio and I saw the similarities between him and Saban, actually.. Saban tried the same strong arm tactics, if I remember correctly, with NFL players that he had done in college and it didn't work in Miami... which lead to his escape back to college football and Alabama which, a job, he said he was not going to take. I too was of the opinion that Urban wouldn't last a year in the NFL.

Napoleon Bonaparte had a long history of abandoning his troops in the field after losing:
    - Egyptian Campaign
    - Aspern-Essling
    - 1812 Campaign
    - Liepzig
    - Waterloo
And there are some accounts of Marengo that suggest he was skedaddling before Desaix turned up to save the day (and conveniently die and not be able to claim any credit). In fact I can’t think of a single instance where he remained with his army after taking an L.

Yet he’s often held up as the apogee of leadership.

Except that Meyer put that staff together.... so, if they ARE a bunch of losers, who is to blame for that? It's the same thing with Flores, he has to answer for all the bad coaching we see for the OL and at OC.

In any event, the Jags are better off without (as I saw one headline read).... Urban Decay.
