Doesn’t matter. You can’t buy something that isn’t for sale. Maybe if you had a Texans/Watson (assuming no legal issues only discontent) situation a la John Elway and the Colts you could swing a trade, but the Bengals were taking nothing less than a young HoF bound QB for that number 1 pick.
The only way we could have gotten the best qb since Dan the Man was to start the latest in a long line of “worst qb since”, Josh Rosen and finish worse than Cincy.
The Dolphins can't even tank right. And The Bengals (Even tho getting squashed RN) have about as bad of an OL as we do. We have a better defense, and probably more weapons on offense (although we could use some upgrades) for Burrow to work with. But, there are so many what-ifs for this franchise. Like I say, they can't do anything right, not even tank! Thanks for bringing it up tho Pump, I'm not really salty we let Flo go either way. I'm upset Grier is still on the payroll, so we're on the same page there.
Hard to believe many of you believe the state of our franchise is due to not losing enough. We lost plenty, opportunity for a winning QB was available to us. We missed it.
I don't, I would have been just as happy if not happier with Herbert. But when you got one of the worst scouts in the NFL making your picks, you damned well better make it easy for him. We obv weren't going anywhere in 2019, so what the hell is the point of winning 5 games? effectively nothing. You just lose your shot at the most sure thing QB, instead of putting yourself in position to make the wrong decision between the overhyped Tua and the NFL-ready Herbert.
We did the same thing the Andrew luck year. 0-7 and then go on a.pointless run and ended up with Tannehill U need to take a step back to take 2 steps.forward.
That's basically the same thing I just posted on my own speculation- Flores was doomed from day 1 for fielding a winning team. He was the only non-player in the building that actually wanted to win each week. I hate that we missed out on Burrow, but darn...I respect the heck out of Flores nonetheless.
Didn't Ross say one of the reasons they got rid of Gase was because he wanted to "win now". They could see 500 win records weren't going to amount to anything so they wanted to rebuild. So Flores tried to win games when he knew they didn't want him to. So no i'm not sad Flo is gone he jeopardized our future for a couple wins to pad his stats.
Flo was not in on the tank. And any self respecting coach would not purposefully lose games. Expecting him to is unfair. Tanking should not be your strategy as an organization. If Grier had any talent as a gm and evaluator he would be able to build a team without tanking. Poor strategy to begin with
Completely disagree they cut all those players to get the franchise QB the following year He follows plan we have Burrow!I don't to ever hear about having to establish that winning culture bull****.You establish the culture by getting the QB Burrow turned that whole franchise around and we got stuck with noodle arm who nobody believes in including Flores. He would still be here if he followed the plan.
We still could have gotten Herbert. A good GM can build a team without tanking. Tanking is a poor man's strategy to building a team. Only no talent clueless clowns like Grier and Ross would make that their main strategy.
I disagree. There are some famous cases where teams deliberately tanked to win a championship. In MLB the Cubs and Astros did that. And Cleveland did everything they could to land LeBron James by stocking the roster with subpar talent. It's exactly what we should have done, and as someone pointed out we already had the player to do it: Josh "epic bust" Rosen. This team has the defense to compete for a SB and even a top WR. We're missing the QB because we can't evaluate talent well, which means you have to make it as easy as possible for your GM: get the #1 pick and even the Dolphins wouldn't have screwed this up.
Thats what i meant Ross wanted to loose the following season and Gase wasn't on board among other reasons he was fired. They wanted a chance to pick high enough in the draft to get a top QB. I'm sure they explained this to Flores when he was hired and he still just did what he wanted.
But it would have worked keeping Rosen in. The bottomline it is what it is and no Burrow. Or Herbert and same ****ty dolphins!
Here's a novel idea, why don't we actually get a competent GM or Coach who knows football and know what they're doing, and put them in charge. Relying on a tank is just an admission that your GM sucks. If you need to make it easy for him, then maybe he should not be GM.
Great idea! Except that it fails once you realize Ross is in charge. Shall we revisit the tanking strategy? lol.
Let’s not forget probably the greatest tank of all time - the Spurs tanking for Tim Duncan. That worked out pretty well for them. Burrow just took a team with the same level of talent that Miami has to the Super Bowl. I’d trade in 4 of those wins for him any day of the week.
Having Rosen gives you the perfect cover for tanking. Its not hard to defend wanting to give your young QB a chance with nothing to play for.
Another thing i thought of if we end up picking 10th in that draft and Miami knows Tua and Herbet would be gone Cinci wasn't budging on Burrow. I bet Miami trades the 10th and 15th or whatever it was and then some to trade up for Tua! That second 1st pick was Jackson no big loss there but still more incompetence for sure.
In that same press conference though, they asked Ross if he would be okay if the team only had four wins. And Ross looked shocked at the idea, like it had never crossed his mind, and replied, "Well, I hope not." So I really think he was too dumb to understand what a rebuild of that caliber would look like. For the record, I was 100% against all of it and said the move would cripple us for the next 5+ years. The only way it worked was for Grier to hit on almost every single pick, and that's just not realistic. I called him a snake-oil salesman three years ago and my opinion hasn't really changed, even with the elite defense since I think that was more Flores than anyone. Still hoping that I'm wrong, but this is the worst I've ever felt about this organization after a winning season.
While we're on the subject of Ross, I know he gets panned around here for being an idiot (and I join that chorus), but I think the truth is somewhat different. A guy like that doesn't succeed to that degree without having good decision making ability. However.. Ross is NOT focused on the Dolphins as his main business. This is closer to a hobby of his than his main focus in real estate. I actually think Ross would do well if he made the Dolphins his primary focus. He doesn't do that though. He delegates instead of taking the time to learn the game himself, and makes suggestions on what to do instead of taking control and being focused on details. Anyway, it is what it is. We've been screwed for too long, but I think the real problem is his lack of prioritization on making the Dolphins a winning organization, not that he's "dumb" per se (like it matters lol).
Now I'm reading Ross is going after Harbaugh and Harbaugh prefers the phins over the Vikings? So who knows
If true it would be the one good thing Ross has done since he bought the team. Hope these reports are accurate. The only impediment I see is Grier. Grier has to be fired or have him hand over the reigns to Harbaugh and be relegated to a mere contract negotiator role.
I get your point but I wouldn’t say same level of talent. Chase is better than anyone on our roster, Higgins is better than our 2nd best option and Mixon is better than anyone we have running the ball.
No, chase can do everything waddle can do, but waddle cannot do everything chase can do. Waddle is more of a slot receiver. Chase can play either on the boundary or in the slot, he can do everything. Waddle is too small to do everything.
He’s not even in the same league as Chase. I know Waddle is limited by our QB but chase is a big play threat and averaged almost 9 YPC better. I would have rather stayed at 3 than what we did.
Maybe. But you’d have to go to slot WR Cole Beasley to find a WR who averaged less yards per catch than Waddle. Unlike Hill, he didn’t take many short throws to the house. I would have been ok with him at #12 but think that trading up to #6 for a glorified slot WR was a mistake.
Honestly, I don't think it was hard at all to tell that Tua want in the same category as Burrow/Hebert, if you just watched him play, and didn't listen to any of the media hype.
Herbert also wasn't in the same category. NFL execs were split on Tua and Herbert. Nobody was split on Burrow.
Physically, Herbert was in the same category. The worry was his maturity and if he'd be able to handle all the outside pressures that comes with the NFL. Believe it or not, that's also probably why Marino dropped in his draft class.
